Astros Will Not Trade Valverde

7:30pm: Ed Wade assured reporters today that Valverde will not be traded.

11:04am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Astros are willing to trade Miguel Tejada.  Teams are interested in him as a shortstop and third baseman.  Rosenthal figures the Twins, Dodgers, Giants, and Angels could be matches.  He adds that the Astros realize they'd have to eat some of Tejada's $13MM for '09.  Richard Justice figures it'd require eating at least half.

Rosenthal says the Astros are not inclined to trade closer Jose Valverde. And Justice figures Ty Wigginton could be tough to move as his salary climbs toward $10MM.

giants???

I'd like to be the 1st to say, that I am not looking forward to the Tommy Manzella era.....

Is Wiggy's salary really going to be 10 million? Damn, he doesn't deserve that.

I could see the Giants, if they plan on moving Renteria to 2nd or Tejada to 3rd

Well, if they eat most of the contract and take a lower level prospect he woud be a stop gap for 1 yr.

Stupidity at it's best.

1. The Stros never should have been in on Tejada.

2. Once they acquired him they should have flipped him at the trade deadline. At that point there would have been no salary to eat AND they could have received something in return. Save 1/3rd of his 08 salary and not have to deal with his $13m 09 salary.

The Stros should not have traded for him in the first place.

I did not realize Wigginton will make close to 10 million.

Sure, he'd be great for the Giants or Dodgers at 3rd - especially at half his salary for 2009. What's wrong with Tejada for a few years? Yeah, his BA & defense are declining, but he's still above avg.

Why would the Twins be in on this? With Furcal out on the market, who is demanding the same salary, but can give better production...I don't get it, if you are going to take an aging SS with low slugging, decent average..just take O-Cab.

I don't think anyone realized that Wigginton made 10 million. That is inflation at its best.

I like Tejada, I think he's a leader, a winner. I know he's not the same without the "juice" but I still think he has value, especially at about half of his salary.

I thought he was making around 6.5, still too much for him...10, damn...

tejada back to oakland?

he fits into their 1 yr short term deal, they have prospects to spare and can take on a chunk of his salary

take your pick astros

1. Trevor Cahill, RHP
2. Brett Anderson, LHP
3. Chris Carter, 3B/1B
4. Aaron Cunningham, CF
5. Gio Gonzalez, LHP
6. Adrian Cardenas, SS/2B
7. Sean Doolittle, 1B/RF
8. James Simmons, RHP
9. Vin Mazzaro, RHP
10. Josh Donaldson, C
11. Michel Inoa, RHP
12. Jemile Weeks, 2B
13. Henry Rodriguez, RHP
14. Rashun Dixon, CF
15. Fautino De Los Santos, RHP
16. Arnold Leon, RHP
17. Josh Outman, LHP
18. Corey Brown, CF
19. Brett Hunter, RHP
20. Sam Demel, RHP
21. Andrew Carignan, RHP
22. Tyson Ross, RHP

I don't think the Twins will go after O-Cab since he's a type A FA and I don't think the Twins want to give up a pick. I think the Twins will atleast talk to the stros about Tejada and Wigginton but the money will be an issue so will compensation if the stros eat some of the contracts.

Wiggy didn't make 10 million, they're saying his salary will approach that figure this year. He made $4.35 million this year--assuming his salary doubles in arbitration (and I don't honestly think it will), he'll make $8.7 million next year. Which is not a terrible one-year commitment for a guy that put up an OPS+ of 128 last year and can play a bunch of positions.

Wiggy made $4.35m last year. I think he'll make around $7-8m in arbitration after the year he had last year.

If the Astros wouldn't demand a top prospect I could definately see him coming back to Oakland. He might be in decline defensively and offensively but he is still a massive improvement on Crosby. Plus the A's have a lot of payroll flexibility and the coming home angle just adds to the story.

I wonder if the jays could maybe get in there...they really need a SS or they could move Hill over to Short and sign O-dog back

I see this more as a move where the Astros are trying to free up payroll by trading both Tejada/Wigginton and using the players they get in return to try to acquire Jake Peavy.

Trading Wigginton does not open a hole. The Astros have Chris Johnson in AAA right now who can at the very least split the 3B duties with Geoff Blum. However, trading Tejada does open a hole as there is NOTHING in the Astros minor league system to replace Tejada.

If you look at the Astros last year, the overachieved significantly and Tejada didnt really do much. Maybe they are thinking of addition by subtraction. Getting rid of Tejada and Wigginton and using the money those 2 would have made on Jake Peavy.

I'd only like him in Minnesota if they convert him to 3B. The Twins don't really have a good SS prospect close and should go after someone more longterm for SS like Furcal/Hardy/Escobar (all unlikely I know). They have two good 3B prospect and could use a one year stopgap. Tejada could be the answer as well as give the Twins a player with the ability to slide around the diamond should injuries arise.

Yeah, but Brian, Peavy isn't a FA and can't just be bought with cash. They have to have a bundle of actual prospects to get Peavy - and I don't know anyone who would try to argue that they do.

B3ENGL - Ron Gardenhire doesn't like Cabrera. When Cabrera went off on Guillen and his teammates, Gardenhire reacted even more strongly than Guillen did!

The Twins are loathe to surrender their #1 pick (especilly to the arch rival White Sox) and with Gardenhire opposed, I wouldn't bet on seeing Cabrera in a Twins uniform any time soon!

And who would be stupid enough to give away good prospects to get Tejeda - isn't he pretty much a shadow of the player he once was? If he goes, it'll be a salary dump to some big budget team.

"Rosenthal figures the Twins, Dodgers, Giants, and Angels could be matches."

Rosenthal really needs to just quit making things up as he goes along. I don't think any of those teams are interested Tejada. Maybe a few years ago, but now? No.

Would be within same division, but would seem to be a good fit fo rthe Cubs.

J the Dizzola, your right but what I'm saying is that the prospects the Astros would acquire from trading both Tejada and Wigginton could be used in a package for Jake Peavy.

"tejada back to oakland?

he fits into their 1 yr short term deal, they have prospects to spare and can take on a chunk of his salary"

We get it...you have good prospects.

Who posts a top 20 lists on a trade rumors site?

Hmm... I don't know, though. Seems like somebody'd have to be a big sucka to fork over real prospects for an old, overpaid guy like Tejeda. I might be mistaken, but he seems like the kind of guy who a contending AL team tries to pick up at the deadline to give them bench depth for the WS run. I should also say that - in my opinion - I suppose Houston *could* land Peavy - but they'd no doubt have to give up Wandy, Castro or Pence, and probably some lesser prospect like Lyles. And there's no way the Astros could ever do that, since that would open up 2 holes that they simply can't fill from their system.

This is what happens when you let Drayton run your team. It's gonna take a complete fire sale and rebuilding from the bottom to get Houston back on track after all those terrible deals they made over the past 2 years.

Pence would definitely have to be added to any Peavy package, I agree there. As far as Lyles and Castro, they arent eligible to be traded since the Astros just drafted them this year.

Oh, that's right. Thanks for that correction. I'm not sure that they would have enough to get that done, since I doubt they'd get any real value for Tejada. The Astros have a great Playstation baseball team - but in real life their roster is chock full of guys with prohibitive contracts. To me, in order to get anything close to the kind of value it would take to get Peavy, they'd have to trade away Oswalt or Berkman - and that would again just create another hole. What good would it be to get Peavy if it meant you had to lose Oswalt to do so? I think they're screwed.

Brian,

Could you please just email the Astros directly with your Peavy talk? You went on some tirade last week about it, and now you are still trying to convince everyone that not only is trading the left side of the infield, closer and right fielder in an attempt to get a guy who's a #3 pitcher outside of Pecto. This is getting kind of sad.

I'm sure Drayton and Co. will love hearing from you.

Darin,

For the longest, I have been on the "Astros land Peavy" bandwagon even at the expense of Pence, Wiggington and Valverde in a three team trade. Now I'm starting to think logically and come to the conclusion that we should hold off on dealing anybody but Tejada until the trade deadline. Valverde's value isn't exactly great right now either. I think Drayton needs to sell the team and/or have someone smart rebuild. I'm so tired of not having Biggio and Bagwell anymore to carry us on their shoulders.
I'm no longer is favor of acquiring Jake Peavy.
I can see it now, JAKE PEAVY TRADED TO ASTROS.
Just my luck.
Oh yeah.
I HATE TIM PURPURA.

So don't trade Hunter Ed. I'm buying my Jersey right now. lol

The single smartest move the 'Stros make all offseason: NOT trading Valverde.

Wait until the trade deadline when the teams that are actually contending are in need of solid bullpen help, then the will-be-in-the-basement of the NL Central Astros can cash him in.
