« Livan Hernandez Did Not Sign | Main | Giambi Not Signing Yet »
4:29pm: ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Phillies will not tread water to see if they get DeRosa from the Cubs. A friend of Ibanez told Stark the Phils are his first choice, so there seems to be mutual interest. The problem: the Cubs want Ibanez too and may not be willing to move DeRosa until they get their outfielder.
3:46pm: Pat Burrell's agent Ed Hayes would be surprised if his client re-signs with the Phillies, as would most observers. Todd Zolecki believes the Phils' top three candidates to replace him in left field are Raul Ibanez, Mark DeRosa, and Juan Rivera.

I think the Reds should go after Juan Rivera, but I'm extremely scared that we are going to sign Burrell

that's a shame. I still think they should have offered a bit more, especially since he's said he'd like to return. 2 years 26 million with an option should have been fair to both.
I hope Ruben knows what he's doing about the 5 hole because Ryan needs protection.

Out of those 3 I would take Rivera, he is a solid OF that would not cost any draft picks or prospects. Played great 2 years ago until he got hurt and never really got to play as much with the OF surplus in LA last year.

So this is why they were talking about trading Happ, so DeRosa could fill in at second and then move to left? I don't like it one bit.
Ibanez is getting old. Stay. Away.
Rivera? I guess if you want to cap out at 25 homers, 90 rbi's and 3 stolen bags.

Pat Burrell is not that great of an outfielder!!!

"Rivera? I guess if you want to cap out at 25 homers, 90 rbi's and 3 stolen bags."
Most people would take that in a heart beat.
I think Rivera will end up being one of the steals of this offseason (I'm sure I'm not the only one).

"Pat Burrell is not that great of an outfielder!!!"
!!!
He's a great hitter though. If he can go somewhere and DH, his OBP skills make him a nice signing.

Would Philly fans be happy with losing Moyer/Burrell and signing Rivera / D.Lowe.... I think I would... Sign another 7th inning arm maybe...

Utley/Howard/Ibanez is a horrible idea.
You don't want it so one LOOGY can significantly weaken the heart of your order in late innings.

Have to think long term that's the more safe option even though Lowe is aging. Not sure how signing Ibanez would be any sort of upgrade over Burrell if you want defense.

I've been thinking this same thing from the moment Ibanez was associated to Philadelphia. Having a 3-4-5 of all lefty hitters is a terrible plan, especially when the cleanup hitter is basically useless against lefties.
As for Burrell, I think he's going to be a good signing for some team, because he'll likely be able to sign for no more than 3/39 max, so I would expect some team to be pretty happy to have him.
Burrell is a very poor fielder, but if he signed on as a DH he could be a great fit for a team like the Rays. He's a consistent 30 HR threat that is basically good for at least a .360 OBP and has .400 OBP capability. He's posted a OPS+ of 122 or higher in each of the past four years, and has walked at least 98 times in each of the past four seasons.
He's not much a fielder, but Burrell is a very good hitter that could be a good fit in many different lineups.

Agreed melonis... they need a RH bat. Whoever they pick up doesn't necessarily need to bat 5th though. They can bat Victorino second and put Werth fifth to break things up a little.

honestly, who wants to pay someone 13 mill + when a team could stick a pole out in left with a glove on it and ited catch more balls than burrel. also, he may hit .340 at times, but he slumps into .100 for months at a time? you call that protection for howard? i love burrel more than most in philly, but paying him big money is a huge mistake. cya burrel, dont let the door hit you on the way out.

Like I said with Moyer they shoulda just offered him Arb. whats the worst that can happen he accepts and gets a 1 year deal.

Burrell just isn't what we need him for anymore, protection for Howard and a better defesive LF. We constantly were taking him out in the 7th or 8th innings for the all mighty Brunlett. So if the game was tied or we were losing, we lost Pat's bat because we were afraid of him being out there when it mattered most... He did hit 33 HR's, but only drove in 86 and batted just .250
Everyone is saying we need a LF? Do we, or can we just put Werth there full-time and platoon a RH with Jenkins and Stairs??? Rivera or DeRosa would fir nicely, especially DeRosa if Utley will miss the 1st 2 months!
If you sign Ibanez, you bat him 6th, behind Werth.
Has anyone noticed that MOST teams are now batting their big boys 3rd now, so they can get more AB's in, and guarentee them to bat every 1st inning?
Pujols, Manny, Papi, Delgado, Fielder, - all the typical "clean-up" hitters are now batting 3rd... why not Howard, with Chase batting 4th? Chase hits lefties... and hits 30+ HR's as well.... so why not????

would burrell be a good pickup for the dodgers in LF so we can forget about manny?
Posted by: thinkblue | December 09, 2008 at 04:29 PM
I have to say there is no way in hell Ibanez is coming to Philly bc- we need a right handed hitter. With John Mayberry on the way I do not see a big signing though

No way the Cubs move DeRosa. Philly has nothing the Cubs need besides Victorino and I don't see that happening.
Posted by: matt_g3 | December 09, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Pat stated before he doesn't want to DH, I bet he signs with a NL club, but not the Phils, just so he doesn't get stuck DHing.

I think it's pretty clear that the DeRosa to Philly possibility is part of the Peavy trade.
