C.C. Sabathia Rumors: Wednesday

1:08am: Gordon Edes notes that Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters he would not be willing to give Sabathia a sixth year on a contract.  They are the fallback option if the big lefty decides he wants to take less to pitch close to home.

12:25am: The big news on the C.C. Sabathia front is that Yankees GM Brian Cashman flew to San Francisco to visit with Sabathia for the third time in three days.  ESPN's Jayson Stark says the visit is not about money and was initiated by Sabathia.  Some believe Cashman will attempt to sell Sabathia's wife Amber on New York.

Stark talked to several baseball people who still don't believe Sabathia wants to be in New York.  One predicted the Yanks would have to include an opt-out clause.  Also, Stark speaks of indications that the Dodgers told C.C. they might be interested if they can fill some of their other needs affordably.

C.C. will you please sign somewhere already

I feel like this is really just CC doing his due dilligence to make the MLBPA happy.

CC, you are one hell of a pitcher and are entitled to taking your time in making one of the biggest decisions of your life. And as a Yankees fan, I would love to have you throw out the first pitch at the new Yankee Stadium. If there is one thing the Yankees haven't had in a while, it is a true ace and YOU would be it.

However, the offer was made almost a month ago (if not already a month). If you have no intent signing with the Yankees, come out and tell them already. Let them focus on bettering their team.

I hope something (anything) happens soon.

Take your time CC.

Yeah, please sign soon.

Let the first domino fall...

do the yankees have no pride? im sure they know that they screwed up with the johan santana but why do we have to go wine and dine him? its obvious he doesn't want to play for the yankees. and as a yankee fan i don't even want him anymore. get lost go and play for a west coast team

In an interview on KNBR680 earlier this evening, Brian Sabean stated he was doing his own "Due diligence" by looking into CC this past week. He also stated the Giants wouldn't be willing to go 6 years but 5 was possible with money not as big a factor.

He also stated the Giants wouldn't be filling their offensive needs through offense but through pitching. By lowering the run differential and CC could be one way of doing so.

Not sure if this puts the Giants closer or further away from making an offer to CC. Any thoughts?

At this point in time, it won't surprise me where he ends up. But it's obvious NY isn't his top priority, otherwise he would've accepted the deal the moment it was offered

It doesn't mean he doesn't want to pitch in NY of course

To everyone that wants CC to sign soon, IMO this thing is only getting started. I see TEX signing first and CC waiting it out, maybe even signing a contract in January. I see more potential suitors for Sabathia to appear soon such as the Dodgers and Angels. If the Angels loose out on Tex, i think they will become front runners.

Wild Prediction: Signs with Angels 5 years 130 million.

Though i wouldn't mind if he signs with SF.

If Sabean is going to offer some sort of contract to Sabathia, he should do it soon. Im sure CC woudl love to have all possible options on the table so he can just make a decision and be done with it.

And if Sabean says there are very very few offensive options available through trade or free agency, he should go ahead and make the offer.

I had a typo in my previous post, i meant to post Angels 6 years 130 million.

I can definitely see the Giants offering 5 years/$115 million. And I think CC would probably bite. He wouldn't have to move his family and he could play for his hometown team.

I think CC has realized that no other team is going to come close to the Yankees' offer and as much as he likes the West Coast and the NL, $140M isn't anything to sneeze at. But once he begins to fade as a player, he'll realize the downside to be a Yankee.

Dodgers, hurry up and sign CC and Manny. Thanks.

I think is funny that Stark thinks the fact that he has "baseball sources" who dont think CC wants to play in New York, is something that should be shocking!

I mean is that supposed to be some sort of news?

If all of the previous posts by Tim are true, and Cashman IS making progress with C.C., then don't you think that there won’t be to many people who even know or will immediately believe it within a matter of a few hours?
.
You can’t just go out there and ask people that were not actually involved in the Cashman-Sabathia meetings, if they think C.C. would like to play in New York because the obvious answer thus far is NO.

Of course there are people out there that still think C.C. is hesitant to play on the East coast, but if C.C. is starting to come around then I would say all previous reports are irrelevant and the only thing that will confirm this belief is time

Giants, top five payroll, bottom five finish.

How to make CC a non factor? Put him in a Giants uniform. Yes they would have a very nice pitching staff. But offense is so bad CC could throw 3 hit 1 run games an still lose.

"Dodgers, hurry up and sign CC and Manny. Thanks."

Chuckle!
Although that would be awesome there's noway the Dodgers are going to ante up 40M or so to sign two studs.

Thats per year, just in case there are any dumb dumbs.

Hey folks if your a Dodger fan who do you take CC or Man'ram.?

That's a good question dchillls

I shouldn't be answering that since you asked Dodger fans and I'm a Yankee fan, but I would say Manny

dchillis- not a dodger fan, in fact i'm a giants fan, but as a Giants fan, I would rather see CC in a dodgers uniform than Manny. Manny is too dangerous inthis division, as we witnessed last fall. CC wouldn't be good either but Manny would be worse

I just dont understand how CC would allow himself to earn the same if not less money than Zito, and still be about 10 times the pitcher he is.

That just wouldnt be right.

If the Giants can throw out $130 million to C.C. then maybe it can be done, but it has to be more than $126 million (Zitos Contract).

yanksgirl... you do realize that CC is calling the meetings with the Yanks, not vise versa... so you can't say the Yanks are looking pathetic and have no pride by wining and dining him... learn the facts... and also, you should know that you cannot judge the Santana trade yet... girls...

yanksgirl you are classic--hence the reason sabathia is over NY

I don't think it has to be more than $126 million because that was over 7 years(18/year). If CC gets say $115 over 5 years (23/year) that would be well above Zito's average as well as still higher than Johan Santana at $137.5 over 6 years (22.9/year).

Not that CC will take less total dollars to play for the Giants but if he truly wants to pitch for the Giants and the gets the offer, it isn't to far fetched to believe it may happen. Also, the Yankee's $140 over 6 years is only slightly higher in terms of average per year (23.3).

I suppose we will see sooner or later but not for at least a week.

Yea but if your going to give a player like C.C. 23 million a year for 5, then why not just make it a little less for 6 years.

Its a bigger contract over all, but C.C. isn’t going to accept a smaller offer over less time. He would want that guaranteed 6th year because if he gets injured and can’t play the 6th season or he has a performance drop off then he just lost 20 million dollars.

No player would ever take a contract based on average annual salary. Guaranteeing that extra year is a big deal as we can see with A.J. Brunette.

*Burnette* sorry.

Sabathia is a Yankee. Believe you me. He called in Cashman to do the damned thing.

NY Post is reporting that Sabathia is a Yankee, after meeting with Cashman in SF.

wake up and update this tim!

This made my day. I knew he would. Now we need to sign Tex.

ahh good to see him finanaly signed let the frenzy begin(hopefully)i guess we know when tim sleeps now lol....you do a great job tim keepit up

Welcome to NY CC!

Of course now we can spend the entire day reading comments here about how much he sucks.

dont think the yanks get tex too. maybe lowe....

why do you expected to read comments about how cc sucks? i hate the damn yanks but a cy young winner is a cy young winner.

i'm thinking its sheets. the question is do they still sign pettitte?

NY Post says the Yanks just signed him.

rougesaw...

For weeks we have been reading how he is too fat, gonna break down, his arm will fall off. Of course thats only in ref to him signing with the Yanks, when he is rumored to go elsewhere, then he is the Cy Young winner.

If you look at the old threads on CC you will see what I mean.

now i'm guessing that Andrew Baggerly is FOS.

congrats yankee fans. enjoy him.

Thanks Phils.
That is very classy of you.
I know how you love us Yankee fans LOL

I just heard the Phils are out of the Manny chase...are u happy or not?

Andrew Baggerly... you have a lot of egg to wipe off your face don't ya?

ESPN just reported CC has signed with the Yankees

yankeegirl,

ya I'd like him but realize we'd be destroying out team 4+ years out because we'd be losing free agents like Hamels, Victorino etc., but management had better take the money WE handed to them in the form of gate receipts/merchandise sales etc to the tune of minimum $25-30 million and spend it on locking those guys up.

I'm more worried about the Peavy deal and why we'd want to help the Cubs out. Don't get me wrong, I like DeRosa but we've got enough gritty guys on our team. We need to replace Burrell's bat. And if our rookie GM gives up the farm (Carrasco or Kyle Drabek) he's going to be crucified as he should.

Although you would think manny would put us as odds on favorite in the NL East and possibly all of the NL. Imagine him hitting behind Howard? Ryan would have like 60HRs and 150 RBI's.

ah well, we can still dream.

Who do yankee fans want next? Burnett, Lowe, Sheets? Tex? And don't say all of the above becuase then you'll really piss people off.

I'm glad C.C. finally signed just so we can all move on, but did ESPN confirm this independently? So far the few articles I've read have all credited the New York Post.

As if I dont piss them off already? LOL

I really want Tex. I wanted him more than I wanted CC, but I really think he stays in LA or goes to Boston.

If they are going after 2 more pitchers Id like Lowe and Sheets. Id rather Sheets on a shorter term than AJ for 5 years.

As for Manny, I hate the guy. Not cause he was on the Sox and killed us, but cause he quit on his team. No excuse for that when you make the kind of money these guys do to play a game.

With that said, he is the best hitter I have ever watched. The Manny/Ortiz combo was the scariest I have ever seen. They can get Tex, but nothing the Sox would do would scare me more than that. THAT is what Met/Brave fans would feel like if you had the Howard/manny combo.

I'm biased against Tex because he never did anything against the Phils. For the short time we played him, he did pretty poorly against us. He's not a game changer like Manny, IMO. He can be pitched around, but Manny, oh that NLCS he was the only one doing anything and he still was amazing. I still can't believe that shoestring home run off Dempster. That was just nuts.

Well just make sure you leave a pitcher for us (but feel free to take Ollie Perez and Burnett so the Braves don't get him :-)

No way do I want Perez, he will get eaten alive in the AL East.

I have followed Tex from his Texas days, I liked him then and I like him now. Of course if he signs with the Sox, i wont be liking him anymore.

That is a really dumb reason to not like someone anymore. Don't act like he's been a longtime Yankee and the big mean nasty Red Sox swooped in and snatched him up.

HUH? He has never been a Yankee. But I dont root for guys on the Red Sox. I wont fault him for signing with them, however I certainly wont be rooting for him.

Sabathia has just accepted the Yankees offer per NY POST and yankees.com

Good story by Sherman in the Post and if true, Kudos to the Yankees for a nice sign. They still need at least 1 more top notch starter, 2 would be great to have a viable rotation however.

I guess that this also means Lebron James will be comming to play for the Knicks.

Wow, Tim just cant catch a break with this crap.

Hey Tim, can you go into a coma for about a week untill Burnett, Texiera, and Lowe are all signed? Thanks!

"HUH? He has never been a Yankee. But I dont root for guys on the Red Sox. I wont fault him for signing with them, however I certainly wont be rooting for him."

That's rather petty, honestly. I don't like the Yankees as a team, but that doesn't hinder my respect for guys like Matsui and Rivera.

As for the Sabathia thing, while it's not entirely unexpected, I really am having trouble believing it until a source not named Joel Sherman is cited, just as I wouldn't believe a Teixiera to the Sox report if Gordon Edes were the only one reporting it.

"2 would be great to have a viable rotation however"

Technically, the Yankees now only really need Pettitte back to have their rotation be on par with any in the AL East. But I would enjoy Ben Sheets to really put them over the top.

I didnt say I wouldnt respect him, I said I wouldnt root for him.
Do you think any Sox fans are gonna root for CC even if they liked him before. Jeez...get a grip, its just how it is.

And Jayson Stark reported it as true, without citing the Post as his source...as did Gammons.

Yea, seriously. Everyone can stop holding there breath and make a move. This dragged on way to long.

7 years, 160 mil as reported by espn

Now that cc has signed... or reportedly... i would rather see the yankees go after sheets.. burnett is going to the braves i think and im not sold on lowe... whats your opinions?
