The latest blog post from ESPN's Peter Gammons is up.
- Gammons talked to a source close to Mark Teixeira who says Tex and the Red Sox are not that far apart.
- The Yankees backed off on the Mike Cameron trade because Melky Cabrera is showing improved plate discipline in winter ball (his walk rate is up, though it's only 15 games). Additionally, Brett Gardner has believers in the organization.
- The Diamondbacks were unwilling to trade catcher Miguel Montero to the Red Sox for Daniel Bard, while the Sox wouldn't part with Michael Bowden. Gammons says it hasn't been seriously discussed but wonders if the Red Sox would eat the $22MM owed to Eric Byrnes to get Montero.
- One part of the post that is getting attention is when Gammons names a bunch of things "we don't know," implying that he suspects these things are possible. For example: "We don't know whether the Red Sox will decide not to pony up and sign Teixeira or whether there really might be a three-way deal among the White Sox, Angels and Reds that would put Jermaine Dye in Cincinnati, Joey Votto in Anaheim and Chone Figgins in Chicago." So, not quite a trade rumor here. The Reds would, of course, want more for Votto if he's even available. When this semi-rumor makes the rounds it must be discussed in the proper context - the paragraph's theme was things we don't know are accurate.
I hope they do, it sure makes sense; they have the money and the return would be less in order to get montero and byrnes as 4th OF...

bard for montero would make me happy as a sox fan
Posted by: 04Forever | December 20, 2008 at 04:13 PM
I'd be happy with Montero.
More importantly, Teixeira come to the dark side. I'm surprised there aren't a lot more posts on this news. Those Sox haters are messing their pants right now in fear.

Was Eric Byrnes injured last year or did he just suddenly fall off and get benched?
Posted by: Little Bear | December 20, 2008 at 04:34 PM
In that circumstance, what kind of prospect would the Sox have to give up?
Posted by: jacklaf | December 20, 2008 at 04:40 PM
I can't believe Cashman is falling for it again. Didn't Melky start out on fire last year too.
Posted by: SierraM | December 20, 2008 at 04:40 PM
What is Byrnes contract?
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 20, 2008 at 04:42 PM
As a sox fan I'd take Montero over Salty consindering the costs if Montero was packaged with byrnes. even w/o byrnes though
Posted by: Mowses | December 20, 2008 at 04:44 PM
22 million for 2 years?
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 20, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Byrnes tore both of his hamstrings early in the season. He missed a lot of time and his performance suffered. He could possibly bounce back this season, but he is 32 years old and has truly only had 1 impressive season.

Bookmark it, it be great.

It is scary that Eric Byrnes and Doug Davis are the highest paid AAV players on the Diamondbacks.

"We do know there are very good Free Agebts out there"
I see he didn't use Varitek's name in that list. He said not one offer.
Hard to believe for the greatest game caller in the Major Leagues.
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 20, 2008 at 05:02 PM
Tough: "Byrnes tore both of his hamstrings early in the season."
Crikey! How do you tear BOTH hammies? Don't you sit down after the first one?
Obviously $11M/year is way too much for a 4th outfielder. The Sox might go for it, though, if it got them a decent young catcher. Byrnes has decent power and good speed (assuming he comes back OK from the injuries). He has experience at all 3 OF positions and is good enough to start while Drew is on the DL.
Posted by: Little Bear | December 20, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Miguel Montero's stats from last year suck so i dont really think thats a fair trade if they have to eat Byrnes' contract as well. As for the Teixiera news thats nice. Sox need Teixiera and Boras wants him to go there so I expect a deal done this week
Posted by: Reality Check | December 20, 2008 at 05:13 PM
if they don't get Tex then i could see them eating some money on Byrnes. If he turns it around this year he'd be a great trade chip. If they sign Tex i dont see them taking on an extra 11 mil for the next 2 yrs for a backup OF.
Posted by: celtics464 | December 20, 2008 at 05:16 PM
if the Angels kicked in prospects to Cincy, and the ChiSox kicked in cash to Cincy, that trade could work.
As an Angel fan, I'd be ALL for it
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | December 20, 2008 at 05:18 PM
Even if Yonder Alonso is ready for the majors I hope the Reds don't move Votto for Dye. I would rather seem them move Votto to the OF. I think they are putting together a nice young core group of players so why break that up.
Posted by: bravesfan | December 20, 2008 at 05:19 PM
Votto is going nowhere. You would be better off trading for Encarnacion and moving him to first.
It just doesn't make much since for Cincy though, trading you 1st or 2nd best hitter for someone who should be your best hitter. They need to add a big bat without losing any offense anywhere else. They already have a well below average offense.
Posted by: Dave from Louisville | December 20, 2008 at 05:31 PM
That trade is a horrible, horrible idea. Heavily, heavily favors the Angels.
Figgins for Dye is fair, yes. Both have little time left on their contracts, and with the Sox maybe kicking in some cash, its a fair deal.
Votto is a stud. Move him to LF if necessary. There is no way the Reds trade him for Dye, even if Dye's salary is all eaten by Angels/Sox. Just no.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 20, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Doesn't Byrnes have a No Trade Clause?
Doubt the Sox would take on Byrnes and his $22 Million if Byrnes required additional compensation to waive his no trade.
Another hang-up is Montero offers more power then Varitek but not much else. If Varitek would cost less then $22 million for 2 years (which I believe he will) there is little advantage in taking Byrnes just to get Montero.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 20, 2008 at 05:49 PM
It is ridiculous to even see Joey Votto's name on this website. He is going nowhere.
Posted by: stuliss | December 20, 2008 at 05:56 PM
We also don't know if Gammons had another aneurism or not before he wrote that piece of trash article.
Or maybe in honor of Doc Ellis, Gammons took some LSD before sitting down at the ole keyboard.
Either way, he should stick to fawning and drooling over the Sawx.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 20, 2008 at 06:07 PM
"Jermaine Dye in Cincinnati, Joey Votto in Anaheim and Chone Figgins in Chicago"
If a GM ever get Votto for Figgins, I quit baseball.
Posted by: MGBB | December 20, 2008 at 06:11 PM
haha i can already see the headline:
"walt jocketty raped by Angels Tony Reagins and White Sox Kenny Williams"
haha
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 20, 2008 at 06:21 PM
That won't happen, however some sort of trade involving Figgins coming to the white sox would solve a few problems for us. You know KW is salivating at the idea as he's had his eye on Figgins for awhile.
Posted by: quentin2 | December 20, 2008 at 06:28 PM
Almost want the Sox to just close up shop on attempting to trade for a catcher period this offseason and look at older veterans like LaDuca, Zaun and bring up Kotteras whom is out of options and go with that for 1 year until Expositio is ready, or one of the others is ready. Teams are just wanting way, way too much for borderline catchers that 5 years ago would be backups anyway.
If Texas won't take Bowden for Salty or teagarten, then stop talking to any teams regarding trades for them, offer 'Tek 5 million for 1 year with a VERY limited time frame, then short term offer Zaun, Laduca/Cash until you find an older vet and get it done and over with.
Posted by: johns | December 20, 2008 at 06:55 PM
Byrnes for Lugo, or Arizona can keep him. Like was posted above, he is old and has really only had 1 good season and makes way too much to be a backup and with his leg injuries you have to wonder about the good speed he even once had.
Posted by: johns | December 20, 2008 at 06:58 PM
That Angels trade blows figgins is done he can't run anymore. KW has Stated he's not interested anymore anyways. Joey Votto is awesome why move him?
Posted by: whitesox4life | December 20, 2008 at 07:36 PM
@ whitesox4life
"Figgins is done he can't run anymore"
30+ SB for the last years has me saying that you are wrong. Figgins in the exact guy the Sox need. He's going to hit for a decently high average. His walk / SO isn't terrible, He will bring speed to the top of the order and most of all He can play BOTH 3B and CF... the 2 positions that the Sox need help with the most!
Posted by: Tough | December 20, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Gammons must have had another stroke if he thinks the Reds are stupid enough to trade Joey Votto.
Posted by: Y-City Jim | December 20, 2008 at 07:53 PM
I think Gammons is finally going senile. We don't need the Reds involved to make that trade happen.
Frankly, I'd like to see the perennial rumor of Konerko to LA for Figgins (and whatnot). That dude would be the icing on the cake for us...
Of course Teixeira's greedy-ass would have to sign elsewhere for this to be a reality...
GO SOX!!!
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 20, 2008 at 08:39 PM
wow y-city u truly are a total d bag arent you? another stroke? dude, ever heard of going to far? cmon man, dont be a d bag.

Wow. Just...wow.

I WANT THIS NOW.

Amen brother!
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 20, 2008 at 09:59 PM
haha lets convince KW and Reagins to do the deal! haha
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 20, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Yea, I'd like to get that deal done before Figgins is 40.
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 20, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Reds would defenitely need a 1B and a GOOD pitcher.
votto will not be traded
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 21, 2008 at 12:49 AM
Dye for Figgins would be a bad trade from the White Sox side.... they would need more than just Figgins.
Posted by: asmithxc | December 21, 2008 at 08:56 AM
for those still trying to throw Lugo to the dbacks, we already have our infield set with Reynolds 3B, Drew SS, Lopez 2B, Tracy 1B/3B and Cojack 1B/LF ... while on the bench we have Ojeda that can play 3B/SS/2B. There's just no room for Lugo (thank god/I hope so).
Posted by: mwozn | December 21, 2008 at 09:00 AM
The Reds trade Joey Votto? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
Where do these morons come up with this stuff?
The Reds wouldn't even trade Homer Bailey straight up for Dye let alone Votto.
No people, expect to see Votto, Bruce, Volquez and Cueto play in Cincinnati for at least the next 10 years.
Posted by: BigRedOne | December 21, 2008 at 10:02 AM
"Dye for Figgins would be a bad trade from the White Sox side.... they would need more than just Figgins."
We were talking about Konerko for Figgins. But no, Dye for Figgins would be great, IF Anaheim didn't want us to comp any of his salary.
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 21, 2008 at 10:11 AM
When you say throw Lugo, you are right. We will fly him over the field and throw him out the plane. Maybe with parachute, maybe without.
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 21, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I don't get it. Eric Byrnes is probably one of the hardest working people in baseball and was the heart of the D-Backs 2 seasons ago. Now, he was injured in 2008 and now D'Backs want to trade him? That's dumb. Well what ever they want to do, but tou look back at 2006 and 2007 when he hit 20 + homers and drove in 70 + RBI's. I don't get it. I wish the Cubs would get him, then we would have a good option for RF and a lead off or #2 hitter. Alos can hit 3rd, 5th in the order as well.
Posted by: BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE | December 21, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Bob,
Totally! Such is our dilemma...
The Konerko for Figgy swap would work out a bit easier (again, IF they lose out on Tex).
Ugh, this off-season is driving me nuts...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 21, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Bob Loblaw,
Thanks for taking time out from writing on your law blog.
Posted by: d2pmr11 | December 21, 2008 at 03:03 PM
The original post is talking about Dye for Figgins... that would be a bad trade for the White Sox. Dye is a much, much better player than Figgins.
Posted by: asmithxc | December 21, 2008 at 05:27 PM
Eh, I still have to disagree...
Acquiring Figgy addresses one of our CORE needs. Would you feel that way if say Anaheim ate all of Dye's salary?
As far as being better, you're comparing apples and oranges. Dye can't do what Figgy can, and Figgy can't do what Dye can...
We need what Figgy can do...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 21, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Yes Bob Loblaw,
10 years. It's called this. All four of those players have a couple more years until they are arbitration eligible. Then they get three arbitration years, that's 5. Then, the Reds give them all 5 year extentions, that's 10. Griffey and Dunn each made 11-12 million per season. It's not hard to see the Reds give each of those guys the same. They are called "core players". Even small market teams can afford to make a handful of guys their core, see the Milwaukee Brewers with Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, JJ Hardy. See the St. Louis Cardinals with Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter et al. Walt Jocketty is the MASTER of constructing winners within budgets.
Posted by: BigRedOne | December 22, 2008 at 10:41 AM
The reds should get Byrnes!!!!!!!!!! he is anallstar right handed bat he would be big in cincy. Also get adkins. E.E. is terrible. Why trade votto he was the reds best player last year
Posted by: Ryan | December 22, 2008 at 10:57 AM
"First of all, there will never be another Big Red Machine - not in Cincinnati, not anywhere. Getting to the question, it's good that the Reds are sticking to a plan of maintaining a young core. There was a time this decade when the club would get antsy and dump promising talent for retread veterans in a win-quick attempt. Now, it's common knowledge around the league that players like Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Johnny Cueto, Edinson Volquez and Brandon Phillips are off the table when trade talks start. I think that discipline will pay off in the long run and could eventually mean a sustained era of contending." - Mark Sheldon, Reds beat reporter
Well said Mark, well said.
