Giants Sign Renteria?

11:24pm: Henry Schulman says Renteria took a physical for the Giants today and "a deal appears to be done."

9:26pm: Renteria's (other?) agent Jeff Lane told MLB.com's Chris Haft, "We're very close to a deal."

7:51pm: Jon Paul Morosi also talked to Meister, who said the Giants are making "substantial progress" toward signing Renteria.  Henry Schulman gets the vibe the Giants might announce a deal with him tomorrow.

4:49pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Giants asked the Brewers about J.J. Hardy, but Milwaukee doesn't want to move him. So Brian Sabean moved on to Cantu.

4:12pm: Brian Sabean told reporters he hopes to sign a free agent infielder later this week.

3:42pm: Jon Heyman chimes in; he also thinks a two-year deal could be completed soon.  Heyman says the Giants have yet to decide whether to target C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, or Manny Ramirez.  Are we seeing a shift back to the win-now plan in San Francisco?

1:53pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick talked to Renteria's agent Barry Meister, who said they're "much, much closer" to a deal with the Giants but "nothing is done."  Crasnick's source says it could be in the two-year, $18MM range.

12:58pm: According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Giants "believe they are closing in on signing shortstop Edgar Renteria."  Brown also says the Giants have discussed trading Jonathan Sanchez to the Marlins for Jorge Cantu.  That'd be a steal for the Marlins, who plucked Cantu off the scrap heap in January for a half-million bucks.

Brown adds that the Cubs remain in the mix for Jake Peavy, and they have two possible matches for a third team in the deal (the Orioles being one).

Burnett has proven he can dominate one night and the next get shelled. Jekyl and Hyde. Same with Sanchez except hasn't had the injury woes yet and still has alot of learning to do since he is coming off his first full season. Burnetts been around you know what you are getting at this point. Sanchez who has a similar makeup still has time to work out his kinks and become a more efficient pitcher

ok..cantu would be a good pick up for several reasons..
one, sanches is good but the giants already have good young pitching. two, with 29 homers, cantu doubles the amount of any plaer last year. He is a good fit, and sabean will still continue to pursue a big bat or pitcher

ok fine, haha, i'll settle with cantu, but I at least, had to throw the Zimmerman idea out there. Because I'm a huge baseball fan, I hate when people don't name actual players in trade concepts so I was just putting something out there. Don't hate me for thinking up a crazy scheme...more to come.

I'm not a genius, but I'd argue idiocy for the people stating 26 years is old.

People going after the fact that I mentioned Morrison in a trade need to relax. It was complimentary towards the prospect and the Marlins system as Logan Morrison is extremely overshadowed by the prolific performance of Stanton in Low A Greensboro, and the name association of Cameron Maybin. I think Morrison is awesome, and I am sure Fish fans do too, but ask around the league and many "fans" couldn't tell you who Morrison is, what team he played for this past year, what his position is, and what his potential is. Bottom line.

do these mlb trade rumor sportcasters go to sleep? i mean, breaking news past midnight, for the love of god cant it wait?

Sanchez won't be going to the Marlins for the reasons the Marlin fans suggest: he isn't demonstrably better than what they have now. It is more likely that he will be included in a blockbuster trade next week at the meetings after Sabean surprises us by landing CC out from under the Angels and Yankees. After the Giants get Renteria Thursday and snag someone like Burrell and CC by next week, then things will be hopping and Sanchez will be part of that.

I can't believe we're going to sign Renteria. I'll agree that he raked with Atlanta a few years back, but not in AT&T Park.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I am ready to hang Sabean from the courthouse lawn.

hell ya one less team to take furcal from the A's

"I'm not sure about anyone else, but I am ready to hang Sabean from the courthouse lawn."

relax with the whole anti-sabean argument...So far this offseason he hasn't done anything wrong. In fact, he has made two good signings that will do wonders to improve our bullpen.

It looks as if the Renteria deal is going to happen and it is not such a bad move. Renteria should be able to improve his number by coming back to the NL. AT&T park shouldnt hurt anything except his HR total which was never anything significant anyway.

He still has a lot of solid playing time left in him and he is not an injury threat. a two year contract is not a bad move.

Sabean has been solid so far...give him a chance.

The Juice,

no 26 is not old to most, but when you have a handful of "successful" starters on your ML club that are at or younger than that then to the Marlins it is old. Sanchez just isn't a fit there, that's all. Other teams he may be if their SP is older and they want to get younger.

And fans that pay attention deserve more credit. Morrison is definitely not unknown to Marlins fans just as Bumgarner is not unknown to Giants fans, but those same fans of other teams may not know Bumgarner but you wouldn't trade him for almost anyone. Maybe a year ago you could have "stolen" him from the Marlins (not sure because their scouting staff is pretty good) but now I'd expect he's pretty untouchable, espeically considering they shipped off Jacobs. I could see him up sometime in 2010 as he'll likely start 09 in AA.

And Leland, keep the trade suggestions coming. IMO, its a good part of what makes this site go.

As an A's fan, the Giants taking Renteria makes me happy.

Although, you can't crucify Sabean for this. Signing Renteria to a 4 year deal is stupid. 2 years isn't bad. He's not going to cripple the team.

wow you guys are talking about Jonathan Sánchez like hes Sandy Koufax..

Sánchez has a life time 5.18 era..he has never done anything besides show he can strike people out after he gives up the lead..cantu has show that he can hit for power, thats what the giants need..im a giants fan and id pull this trade in a heart beat..
i know hes not the best option but we need power and ill take his 29hr's 95rbi's (more like 24hr's and 85rbi's in SF)
