« Phillies Acquire Ronny Paulino | Main | Brewers Looking For Pitching »
8:36pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock learned from Towers that he should know one way or another on a Peavy trade by the end of the Meetings. Towers now believes a fourth team will be required. Towers mentioned that Marquis and DeRosa may be hangups, especially Marquis' contract. Though he'd prefer not to, under certain circumstances the Padres might pay some of his salary.
There was some goofy Carlos Carrasco/Jason Donald stuff we didn't link to today, and that was shot down. Brock suggests names like Josh Vitters, Felix Pie, and Kevin Hart could be involved on the Cubs' part.
8:31pm: Jayson Stark says Peavy to the Cubs doesn't seem inevitable anymore, and the sides have not made progress in the last 24 hours. The Cubs have leverage, so they've dug in their heels. Stark adds that once word of the possible inclusion of DeRosa linked, Jim Hendry has been "bombarded with calls from other clubs interested" in him. Hendry does not want to trade DeRosa.
6:00pm: Buster Olney says the Yankees have talked with the Padres recently about Peavy, but it didn't go anywhere.
5:19pm: Brock talked to a Padres source who does not believe the Twins are involved.
4:10pm: Buster Olney says Axelrod left the Meetings with no word of a deal but the expectation is still that the Cubs will get it done.
3:48pm: Tom Krasovic reminds us that Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod said going into the Meetings that the Yankees would be more attractive to his client if they signed C.C. Sabathia. Still, Peavy prefers the NL.
3:17pm: Corey Brock says the Phillies might want Scott Hairston from the Padres to use in left field.
2:33pm: Carrie Muskat's Cubs source says DeRosa will not be traded.
9:45am: LEN3 says the Twins discussed DeRosa with the Cubs yesterday. The Cubs will present the Twins with a list of pitchers they like, which will be influenced by the Padres' preferences.
9:31am: There's word from Jim Salisbury that pitcher Kyle Kendrick could be included in this three-team trade.
1:19am: If you dare to sort through yesterday's Jake Peavy rumors, click here. Today, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times maintains that the biggest obstacle is the Cubs moving part of Jason Marquis' contract. Another factor - the Padres will need to free up several spots on the 40-man roster. The Cubs' sale will not be an issue.
Wittenmyer adds that a Phillies official didn't expect to get Mark DeRosa from the Cubs but rather other players. Also, Cubs officials shot down the John Perrotto rumor that the Cubs might shop Carlos Zambrano after acquiring Peavy.
Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune also weighs in. He says the Padres have discussed Phils catching prospect Jason Jaramillo.

DeRosa, Marquis, Pie, Vitters for Peavy is a pretty good deal in my mind for the Cubs.
Assuming we're sending 4-5M in cash as well, it's cost neutral for Hendry and only costs the team DeRosa in terms of players that would have contributed in '09

As a phils fan, the more and more I read about this deal the more frustrated I get, why would the phillies trade there top prospect(Carrasco) and Donald for 1 year of DeRosa. I just don't get it. I was all for Ruben getting the job but seeing and hearing some of the decisions that he's made or is thinking about making makes me wonder did the front office make the right choice.

Sam--
Agreed on Carrasco. I do NOT trade Carrasco in any deal for a 1 year rental. The A's were able to get Holliday, a FAR superior player, by giving up guys who were somewhat buried on the depth chart. Top prospects should only be given up if the player actually is a difference maker (Holliday, Brewers and Sabathia, etc.).
Ruben Amaro hasn't made enough questionable moves to really make me suspect him. The removal of Arbuckle is really, really sketch, but that probably involved guys higher up than Amaro.

Gillick is still involved as an advisor so he would NEVER let them trade Carrasco and Donald for DeRosa or anything similar. that's just idiotic.

I am starting to think this trade will not happen.

Kevin Towers for president. This guy is a complete idiot. I personally don't see Peavy being traded anytime soon. He will be in a Padres uniform for their season opener. Maybe they can unload him at the july deadline.

Jebus Chr---!!!! This is just like last year with Brian Roberts. Lets just sign Milton Bradley, then what the hell sign Randy Johnson if its reasonable. Then see if we can trade Marquis for somebody, id take a bag of Doritos for marquis!!

wait you're really JUST STARTING to think this? The fact its been talked about with 10 different teams and about a hundred players didn't already convince you???

Really as a Cubs fan I am not enjoying two years in a row when they are on the fringe of an all-star caliber player, and don't end up getting him because Hendry thinks he's getting screwed. Last year he didn't want to give up Pie for Roberts. DeRosa is expendable, that should be obvious. The only question I have is if the Cubs do keep DeRosa will they have enough money for right field? Those talks have been dead for a day and a half now it seems.

It just kills me to see two years in a row Hendry thinking he is getting screwed by a team might send all-star caliber useful players to the cubs. Like when he couldn't get Roberts because he didn't want to include Pie. I don't think I could handle another offseason full of heartache like last year. Just get it done. Will the Cubs have money if they don't trade DeRosa for a right fielder?

Sorry about the double post, but here's a third one. It seems that every year the Cubs have some sort of chunk of money to spend to aquire whom ever they want. This year they don't have that. This is why I am not totally sold on Hendry being such a good GM. He doesn't want to take risks with his players, and besides the Harden and Nomar deals, I really don't remember any real blockbusters Hendry has pulled off, and I will say that he was creative with Harden, but Jason Kendall was a bad trade, as was Ceda for Gregg. I just think he makes some bad decisions. I think trading for Peavy would be a good one to offset some of the bad ones.

The Peavy stuff was funny the first hundred posted updates. Now it has gotten into Roberts territory of last year where the rumors are annoying and bring a 'who cares' attitude to it all. The one thing Towers did say that seems logical in this abyss of rumors is that Thursday he will have his answer. He will know if he has a deal or Peavy starts the season as a Padre. Yeah, right. They will announce talks will continue beyond Thursday. I hope not. Less than 24 hours from now it either happens or it does not happen.
As I keep posting, I am all good if the trade does not go down. I like depth on the club and would rather see upgrades elsewhere. But I understand chances to get a real good pitcher in these circumstances are rare. So I can see trying to do it, too.

I forgot to add a couple other points. The report that Towers says a fourth team is needed is really a mess. Seriously, take Jake back to SD and tell your fanbase you tried, but Peavy will start the year as a Padre and revisit the market in July. This is really getting wierd.
Say Burnett signs with the Yanks Thursday. Does Wren get back in on Peavy?

Mattmann-
Are you kidding? Jason Kendall a bad trade? Or would rather of had Koyie Hill and Rob Bowen as our catchers. Soto was going to spend the rest of the year in the minors and would come up when rosters expand. Getting Kendall for Bowen was a good trade cause Bowen is a back up for Kurt Suzuki now.

DeRosa will be a Cub next year.Count on it!
Posted by: Dennis | December 10, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Mattman - You may have forgotten a few of Hendry's blockbuster trades that worked out pretty well:
1) Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton for Bobby Hill. How's Hill doing now?
2) Derrek Lee for Hee Suck Choi.
3) Barrett for Damian Miller...not quite as big but was good for 2 years...until Big Z knocked his lights out. 4) Clement and Alfonseca for Dontrelle Willis. I know Willis was great for the Marlins that year but Clement was a big reason the Cubs made it to the NLCS. And Alfonseca gave the Cubs more fingers and toes than any other team in the majors that year.
Way too early to criticize the Gregg trade unless the discussion is based on the possibility that he could have gotten a better player for Ceda (ie. been included in Peavy trade) but Ceda may never amount to anything...on the other hand...could be a stud.
Even the best GM's make a bad trade here and there. Hendry's worst trade was Josh Hamilton for $50,000 after the Rule V draft. Whoops!!

"Say Burnett signs with the Yanks Thursday. Does Wren get back in on Peavy?"
Thats what I was wondering. Although it does seem like they'd moved on anyways.
Posted by: reprisal | December 10, 2008 at 10:47 PM
You had me until you brought up Hamilton. I disagree that was a bad move. The guy was 28-29 and a major drug user and alcoholic. Seriously, he was not long for this world. Yes, he turned it around. Good for him! I mean it. Can you blame Hendry for passing on him? I don't. Besides, the Reds had a trade deal with the Cubs in place. That's why Hendry took him and immediately traded him. Pierre was a bad trade if you want my opinion.

ahmcubby
Good points, I sort of forgot about his earlier history. That's just it though, it was earlier. He has not done anything except Harden these last few years, and it seems that he has bad judgement on the free agent front which may not be his fault. Still having all these talks about Peavy gets a fan's hopes up about the future.
BleedCubbieBlue,
Whatever the Cubs gave up for Kendall was not worth it because quite frankly Kendall pissem many Cubs fans off with his no hit no throw badness. I would have rather had Hill and Bowen yes. Also when was Kendall acquired? Soto had already seen major league action by that time I believe.
