« Jake Peavy Rumors: Monday | Main | A's Decline To Offer Arb To Embree, Thomas »
According to MLB.com's Jim Street, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik made an offer to a position player free agent and expects to know more within 24-48 hours. That free agent is not Ken Griffey Jr., though Zduriencik has talked to his agent. Any guesses? One reader emailed wondering if the Ms could be the mystery team for Rafael Furcal.
Alan Embree is also on the radar; he acknowledged that the Mariners were one of ten clubs to express interest with his agent.

A 39 year old situational lefty [Embree] should be at the bottom of this team's list of priorities.
Furcal would be interesting but I would hate to see how much they would have to overpay to get him to Seattle. That would then set into motion another roster move involving Betancourt, Lopez or Beltre.
It would interesting for sure.

Maybe the M's wanna bolster their rotation some more...
Jon Garland at 5 years, $70MM.

"A 39 year old situational lefty [Embree] should be at the bottom of this team's list of priorities."
Embree isn't a situational lefty. He's equally ineffective against both sides.

Bavasi's already been fired.

================================
Now THAT is funny. :)
I really have no clue who this mystery free agent could be. Nobody really makes sense for Seattle right now. They are either..
A. Too good a player and won't sign with Seattle.
2. Too old and don't make any sense for a rebuilding club.
E. Really insignificant and fly in way under the radar.
Can't wait to see who it is..

The Seattle PI says it's a position player, and I for one would like it to be Casey Blake. They've said Tuiasosopo seems to be the Third Baseman of the Future for the M's, and Blake could fill in for the time being, then slide to first when Tui's ready. It would certainly make it pretty easy to trade Beltre if it's Blake.

Mystery team is the Seattle Mariners......who are shopping both Jose Lopez and Yuni Betancourt.
The M's middle D was terrible, and they have no one to play SS....if they trade Betancourt, they keep Lopez at 2B, if they trade Lopez, they slide Betancourt over to 2B (his natural position) and vastly upgrade their middle IF defense with Furcal.

Blake really doesn't make any sense.
There are a myriad of holes on the Mariners but 3B is definitely not one of them. You can't make a signing on the premise of a possible trade. If Beltre is indeed dealt, Jose Lopez is most likely to be moved to 3B anyway. Combine that with Blake being a RHed hitter and it makes even less sense.

Capper,
Betancourt's natural position IS shortstop. He just gained about 20 pounds in the last year and half and let his defense go out the window. His first year up, he was a Gold Glover in waiting. The kid was amazing at short. He then proceeded to turn into a lazy turd and gained weight.
Furcal would be an asset on the M's because it would allow the Mariners to then trade Beltre.

can you guys read? position player not a pitcher.
to narrow the search it's not a C and prob not an OF. My hope is that the offer is to Creede. But I think the offer might be to Punto, because what we Mariners need now is D up the middle.

What about Orlando Cabrera? What is he looking for money wise? He is a great fit in my opinion?

thr33niL.........
He played SS in his 17 & 18 yr old Junior League, but spent 3 years after that at 2b......and if you have seen him play much, he projects much better at 2B than SS.
"Yuniesky Betancourt age 22 SS can play 2B. He was the SS on the Cuba's National 17 to 18 yr old team and played in the 2000 World Championship in Canada. Hitting .523 during the tournament.
He played 2B with Villa Clara of the Cuban National league from '01 to'03. He hit .288 4HR's with 45 RBI's and 43 runs scored. He improved in '03 prior to leaving Cuba to .317 7 HR's with 52 RBI's and 64 runs scored.
Daryl thanks for the effort any more you come up on him will be appreciated great as I hope this ids of some help as well."

I'm frankly surprised that no one has mentioned Adam Dunn. It really would seem to make the most sense for the Mariners. I really thought about Furcal, but Kinzer just made it clear that he most likely won't have a home before Winter Meetings, so unless Seattle's giving him 5 years for $10 MM+/year, they wouldn't hear anything in the next 48 hours.
I think they got excited because Dunn wasn't offered arbitration and they thought the D-Backs would, so they're trying to sign him before the demand increases once Teixeira is signed.
Only other names I think it could possibly be would be Hudson, Cabrera, Renteria, Blake, Bradley, Burrell, or Abreu....
Juan Rivera perhaps?

He may have played 2B in Cuba but has all of 9 games of 2B under his belt in 3 years as a professional.
That compared to the 515 games at SS.
And I have seen him play. I take in 90% of Mariner games every year. I can tell you that when he was lean, in-shape Yuni, he was one of the better shortstops in baseball. The out of shape, lazy Yuni is a different animal and, you're right, is better suited for 2B.
We'll see how that works out because he is supposed to undergo a grueling offseason training session with Ibanez down in Florida. Hopefully he can lose a few LBs and get his range back.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 01, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Oh, and in the minors, Betancourt had an additional 99 games at short against his 2 games at second.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 01, 2008 at 11:58 PM
I thought about Dunn but what is he really worth at this point? The D-Backs didn't even want him for 1 year and 13 million. So what can he expect on the open market? 3/30 ...maybe? His bad defense and inability to hit over .230 really hurts his case for the big bucks.
I'm not sure how I would feel about a Dunn signing. It would all depend on the money and years I guess.

Well, my point was he had more experience at 2B before he floated in....and I believe the general consensus on him....and the reason no one jumped on him, was that he was a poor SS and the belief was he was better suited for 2B........and if you've taken in 90% of M's games, you know he has never been a good SS, early on, he made some hilight reel plays, but booted more than his fair share.... I believe the M's will either move Yuni or Lopez and the guy that sticks plays 2B (This has been talked about quite abit).
Dunn = Sexson.....we just got rid of one declining all or nothing strikeout machine, we dont need another.
Posted by: Capper | December 02, 2008 at 12:21 AM
I don't want to get into a full on e-debate but the reason Betancourt was rushed to the bigs was because of his defense. He completely blew away our scouting debt with his glove and they brought him up with the hopes his bat would hold its own.
He has steadily gotten worse instead of improving. And every Mariner fan knows its because he decided to take in twinkie devouring as a hobby. Well, along with not setting foot on a treadmill during the offseason.
In essence though, we agree. Yuni is better suited for 2B right now.
