« Orioles Interested In Hendrickson, Miles | Main | Holiday Coverage »
8:07pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says baseball people expect Teixeira to sign before Thursday. Rival execs see the Red Sox as the favorite. The Orioles and Nationals remain engaged; the Yankees are the wild card. Heyman says the Yanks would only want to spend slightly more than the $161MM they committed to C.C. Sabathia.
7:20pm: Roch Kubatko of MASN Online learned from multiple sources that the Nationals "have sweetened their proposal to Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178-184MM." He's been told they're willing to go nine years and there's been talk of ten.
9:02am: ESPN's Buster Olney sums up the Mark Teixeira situation in his blog today. Olney says Teixeira's "leverage has probably maxed out, and now only runs the risk of being diminished." The status of the involved teams:

I feel like the only reason the Nats are pushing so hard is they feel they want to show their fans they care. Kinda dangerous when you're playing around with that kind of money.

Teix couldnt be a franchise player in Texas and in Atlanta. What makes people think he'll be one in Washington?
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | December 22, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Oh. I forgot Olsen.
Hill/Martis/Olsen for the 5 spot then.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 22, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Go get 'em Nats!!
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 22, 2008 at 07:36 PM
Mark Teixeira will most definitely sign with the Nationals. I had this feeling for a very long time and if you think about it the Nationals might be able to seriously compete this year if they can acquire another starting pitcher. A rotation of Jordan Zimmerman, Scott Olsen, Dan Cabrera, John Lannan, and ( ) is really solid considering how good their offense would be. I Hope my Mets pull their heads out of their @sses and instead of bringing in a Tim Redding or Bartolo Colon (two former *Nationals*) sign one of the Japanese players like Koji Uehara for instance to be our #5 man in the rotation.

"Teix couldnt be a franchise player in Texas and in Atlanta. What makes people think he'll be one in Washington?"
Being a franchise player and getting the team into the playoffs are two different things. The Texas squads and the Atlanta squad of '07/08 had pretty much no pitching. Even the best offense in the league goes nowhere if the pitching sucks.
And, Teixeira was only in ATL for a year, and was on a team anchored by Chipper and McCann.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 22, 2008 at 07:37 PM
( ) = WTF????
I put Collin Balester'sname there....
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 22, 2008 at 07:38 PM
Tex is not worth over 165$ imo.
Posted by: Hellcity | December 22, 2008 at 07:41 PM
The Nats will still finish 3rd at best with Tex and even that will be a struggle.
Posted by: celtics464 | December 22, 2008 at 07:45 PM
I hope the Nats get him. Then after a couple of years when Nat fans realize that Tex can't save their team, he'll be playing in front of crowds of 4,000 people.
The best part is that the Red Sox can keep Lowell, bring up Lars, and they don't have to stoop to the Yankees' level by adding over-priced and over-rated players at any cost.
Posted by: fapelbon | December 22, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Melonis Rex, that lineup looks awesome but I dont think Harris will be the starting second baseman, he may play there some times, but hes just an outstanding utility player.
Either we'll pick one up somehow or Anderson Hernandez will be playing, so far hes tearing it up in the winter league.
Posted by: cmdterps44 | December 22, 2008 at 08:08 PM
You no what? The Nats can have him. We don't even need the money grubbing looser. Geez, I'm so frustrated with all of this. The sox can use the money to build a better bull pen and put Masterson in the Four spot.
Posted by: jsoxfan84 | December 22, 2008 at 08:11 PM
$165M is for a franchise type player.
Tex? No. Its obvious that he doesn't care much for winning and is in it for the cash.

after all the crap he has put everyone through, he better win a triple crown

Rolling, sub. in Hinckley for Manning. Chuck is a Cardinal now. oh, and Dukes will start over Kearns. Hernandez over Harris. Hill - who knows.
Posted by: AnonymousSources | December 22, 2008 at 08:42 PM
teixeira would be a diamond in a large pile of turds with the nationals, but hey, money talks
Posted by: 04Forever | December 22, 2008 at 08:42 PM
so let me get this straight.
besides the media needing to stfu and stop making uneducated guesses about many current baseball situations, this is how texs status stands:
1.Red sox believe they are not a factor
2. angels have withdrawn their offer
3. yanks arent completely commited even though they have offered around 8/160
4. the nats have the highest money offer but high ranking team personnel are pessimistic about their chances
So we're down to the os. all reports make it seem like its certain he will sign with us even though we have possibly the worst offer on the table and the reports a few days ago said there was almost a 0% chance hed sign with baltimore.
what am i to think about this situation. i wish i could go back to baseball in the 30s and 40s so i could enjoy baseball without these ridiculous salaries and situations. i hate these greedy bas tards
Posted by: clemsontribe24 | December 22, 2008 at 08:44 PM
Personally i feel Kearns will be traded anyway so Dukes would most definitely start
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 22, 2008 at 08:45 PM
04, you have no idea.
Posted by: AnonymousSources | December 22, 2008 at 08:50 PM
"So we're down to the os"
Why do orioles fans think they are in the lead they have the WORST contract by about 20 million dollars.
Posted by: Reality Check | December 22, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Teixeira going to the 100 loss Nationals for 9 years and $200 million bucks? How are they paying for this? - With federal bailout money?

"Baseball people" think Teixeira will sign soon?
Very astute analysis, guys.
Posted by: Ksy92003 | December 22, 2008 at 09:00 PM
As a Yankees fan, the offense is a concern. Nady/Matsui protecting A-Rod? That is laughable.
I see Swisher as a utility player off the bench. If only Cano could produce before AND after the AS break, he could hit 3rd, A-Rod 4th and ______ hitting 5th. Nady and Matsui have no business hitting 5th at all.
Posted by: InvalidUserID | December 22, 2008 at 09:01 PM
reality check
i never said that. i said the many sources should stop reporting unti ltheres a conclusion because right now each reporter is essentially putting their foot in their mouth everyday. all the reports say the sox are out, angels-out, yanks-not likely and nats are pessimistic. so if u look at the situation that leaves the os as a likely home. and i pointed out how strange that would be since we offered the least yrs and money. try reading the posts first

i cant wait for all you nats fans to find out how good daniel cabrera really is. lol

this mess should be over tomorrow, i doubt it carries over christmas since tex wanted to pick before then.
Posted by: 04Forever | December 22, 2008 at 09:19 PM
I hope Tex lands in Washington. I know the Braves'll havr to face him a lot, but talk about a wacky and unexpected place for him to end up. It would be the surprise of this year's offseason, for sure.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | December 22, 2008 at 09:35 PM
i agree with 04 this should be over tomorrow. the sooner this is over the sooner the offseason excitment begins when the dominos start to fall everywhere

Oakland Gets:
Miguel Tejada
Houston Gets:
Bobby Crosby
Santiago Casilla

i have been reading these threads for about a month know. i think that scott boras may have bluffed one time to many this off season. i think that all of the owner's may have caught onto boras's schemes. i think that boras probably told each team that is/was interested mark teixeira that they were outbid by a mystery team. i don't think that there is any mystery team at all. i know that most if not all of what i just said was probably said at some point this off season. by the way this is my first post here.

shot in the back? over a matter of 80 dollars?
Posted by: Calamity Francis | December 22, 2008 at 09:54 PM
Common sense check. The nationals wait until now to up their offer? They initially entice him by offering the same thing everyone else is in spite of their team being the worst. They wait a few days after he almost signed with another team to decide to up their offer? Nice try Boras, but this does not pass the smell test.
Posted by: walkoffblast | December 22, 2008 at 09:55 PM
I dont know what to believe anymore it could be a ploy for the Nationals to up the offer a little more or he could have legitimately signed with the BOSOX

until i see tex with a "B" on his head, im not taking ANYONES word on ANYTHING!

"The best part is that the Red Sox can keep Lowell, bring up Lars, and they don't have to stoop to the Yankees' level by adding over-priced and over-rated players at any cost."
So if Tex or Manny go to the Yankees, they are overrated, but if they sign elsewhere, they aren't?
Oh Btw, Lowell is ovverrated
Posted by: mike923 | December 22, 2008 at 10:35 PM
And now, announcing the starting lineup for YOUR washington nationals...starting at first base: Mark Teixeira! Starting everywhere else: abunchofeffinstiffs! And on the mound, the kid they just called up from the farm!
Woo Hoo, Nats fans, rejoice! If you want to see what your team's going to look like, check out some video on the 2001 Rangers. Mathematically eliminated by the trade deadline! A pitching staff giving away a half dozen genuine mlb baseballs nightly to lucky fans in the bleachers! And probably bankrupt and moving to Portland by 2014.

JESUS PICK A TEAM ALREADY TEX LOL
Posted by: mike923 | December 22, 2008 at 10:44 PM
Well, it just so happens that I'm sitting here with Mark Teixeira, so why don't I ask him where he's going? Uh...Mark says to go ask Boras.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 23, 2008 at 12:02 AM
"Oh Btw, Lowell is ovverrated"
You damn right he is and I still don't want Teixeira.
"Nats will win if thats true. Greedy Tex will take the money. Its obvious that he was only interested in the money from the beginning."
I'm still waiting to see where the Sox have been outbid?
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | December 23, 2008 at 12:09 AM
Thank You WittCap79, Yankee and Boston fans think they are the only ones that can afford players, which is wrong.. The fact is that the Yankees and Boston spend money because they want to win...teams like Baltimore and Washington they have tons of money also...they just don't spend it... look up Ted Lerner and Peter Angelos you'll see they got tons of money... like WittCap79, it's if they are willing to give some of it away to someone else.... but this talk of them not having enough money as the Yankees and Boston is flat out ridiculous...
Posted by: fearthechant | December 23, 2008 at 12:25 AM
Im not believe anymore of these Boston reports (Sons of Simmons) to I see him sign cause he would have signed last week if that was the case... 8 years 170 dosen't seem that much better than last week... I doubt this is true... I wonder if their sources are Buster Olney and Peter Gammons...
Posted by: fearthechant | December 23, 2008 at 12:29 AM
"Thank You WittCap79, Yankee and Boston fans think they are the only ones that can afford players, which is wrong.. "
Do you mean Yankees and Red Sox haters? Because I'm sure all Yankee and Red Sox fans know that other teams can afford players, they just don't use their money like the Yankees and Red Sox do
Posted by: mike923 | December 23, 2008 at 12:35 AM
"8 years 170 dosen't seem that much better than last week"
Based on what has happened in the last week he would be lucky if the offer has not dropped.
Posted by: walkoffblast | December 23, 2008 at 01:36 AM
I don't get it.
The Yankees don't really seem that interested in signing Tex, so why even bother pretending to be to help Boras build up the price? If the Yankees had LEGIT interest, there'd be a LEGIT offer on the table, not speculation of an offer.
In the end, I think the Yankees are in on Manny. Maybe they're helping Boras in a gesture of good faith.
Either way, this is getting boooorrrrriiiinnngggg.

04Forever:
"sons of simmons is going ahead and saying that its an 8/170 for the red sox in principle pending a physical..."
That's as good as me saying the following announcement.
"Despite reports to the contrary on behalf of the New York Yankees and the Steibrenners and GM Brian Cashman, we are happy to announce to fans that we have reacher preliminary deals with Free Agents Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez, pending physicals)
It's really easy to make things up, see anyone can do it..
All these blogs and people who claim to have insider knowledge really need to get a life.
If it's true that Mark will make a decision by Christmas well then just wait. There's only 2 days to go.
Posted by: Pat Kelly | December 23, 2008 at 07:10 AM
What I don't understand with the O's/Nat's bids is they both seem to be more emotionally charged then well thought out business moves.
If either had a serious hole to fill at 1st base only, I could understand the push, but both of these organizations have a tremendous amount of building to do if they are going to compete in their respective divisions beyond signing 1 guy.
Teixeira was a great guy to build a franchise around when he was cheap; now that he is going to be extremely expensive this is thinking building a franchise around Helton was a good idea.
The Rockies are the best example of how bad a contract like this can handcuff you. They lost Holliday and will lose Atkins/Hawpe in the next year or so because they tied up far too much of their payroll in 1 guy instead of setting aside money to sign their young up and coming players to long term extensions.
The Rays on the other hand are a solid example of how you build an organization. Instead of them going for broke and hoping one signing would get things done they stayed patient, built their farm and now as their talent starts to mature they are able to sign them to long term extensions. (i.e Evan Longoria).
Lastly, I say its emotional because they seem to think that signing Teixeira will put butts in the seats because he is a hometown kid. This might work for the first month or maybe even 2, but if the keep fielding a losing franchise they will not fill the seats.
Also, while these teams might have their first round pick protected they will forfeit their second round pick.
So now, they have to pay Teixeira, try to sign their 1st rounder for what will likely be a nice signing bonus and then lose their 2nd round pick.
It is frustrating to see just a handful of teams being capable of absorbing big contract mistakes but I will be fairly disappointed if the Nats or O's sign Teixeira but are unwilling to improve their club in any other areas.
I remember how frustrated Tejada had grown with the O's unwillingness to improve the club and the rumors started of him demanding a trade. I hope if Teixeira signs with either of these clubs the same situation isn't created as the Rockies/Helton, or the O's/Tejada.

On an added note:
Any Nats fans know the status and projected ETA for Chris Marrero? Wasn't he moved to 1B in the minors this year and isn't he their best prospect?
I'd have to believe the kid is no more then 3-4 years away. While he obviously is like any other prospect; (nothing until he proves himself) he is in theory the Nats best prospect so this would mean they are considering making a move that blocks their top prospect; hardly a smart idea for a building franchise.
If (and its a big IF) Marrero could become the player many think he could be, wouldn't getting him to the bigs and then maybe signing him to an extension make more sense for building a long term competitive team?
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 23, 2008 at 07:41 AM
As soon as Money Teixeira signs with anybody, Money Ramirez goes to the Yankees this makes too much sense. Dodgers dragged their feet on this and will lose.
