Pettitte Has Three-Year, $36 Million Offer?

SI.com's Jon Heyman says Andy Pettitte's agents are telling teams he had a three-year, $36MM offer in hand (the team is not known).  I can't figure out what team would be willing to make that commitment.  This information apparently has not moved the Yankees to increase their one-year, $10MM offer.

If Pettitte really had a 3-year offer, he'd have taken it by now.

Whoever it was, you can keep him.

Not gonna work Andy..Just take the 1 year deal from the Yankees or retire...

LOL wut?

He's going to take it now, I bet.

I'm betting its the Dodgers.

DODGERS!! WHOOO!!

2-1 odds this is a lie
5-1 odds on the Dodgers
10-1 odds on the Astros
20-1 odds on the Red Sox

wtf? who wants pettitte for the next three years?

If he really does have that offer on the table, good for him. He should jump on it now, and no Yankee fan should find fault with him for leaving.

He has a 3YR/$36M offer on the table but he's holding out for the Yanks to adjust their 1YR/$10M... sounds like BS to me.

haha, 04 forever...

i think this is a lie too....

if legit, i think it's the dodgers...

Maybe the Nationals? lol

Im going to take a guess that it's from a Japanese team or the Long Island Ducks. Something like that. If any MLB GM offered this, the team's owner should fire him.

man andy you sure do make yourself look silly in this situation.

I guess this is the point where I say thanks for everything Andy and good luck with that...

I wonder if his agents are using fellow aging/craty lefty Jamie Moyer's success as leverage at all.

if this is ACTUALLY true, pettitte should have screamed "DEAL!!!!" so he knew the whole world heard it

If he's thinking about retiring, why would anyone offer him 3 years?

With Pettitte, Texiera and Willie Harris, the Nats are going to win the WS in '09.

Hahahaha

Hopefully this isn't the Braves. But I know we are looking for a lefty and some stability in the rotation. 3/36 seems ridiculous though.

Paying tens of millions for a multi-year deal, to an older player in decline.... yep, sounds like a trademark Colletti move.

The Yankees knew Pettitte was hurting (enough so that they sent him for 2 MRIs), yet they kept throwing him out there. It's rather slimy to do that, then offer him a huge paycut using his stats while hurt as justification.

If this is true I would put my money on the Rangers having made this offer.

I'm a big Andy Pettitte fan but if this opens the door for Ben Sheets I'd be ecstatic.

1)C.c
2)Wang
3)Burnett
4)Sheets
5)Joba

Thats just plain nasty.

I think sheets, burnett and joba in the same rotation is way too risky injury wise. We need a pettite or lowe

gleb - so who pitches come september when burnett and sheets are hurt and joba has reached his innings limit

CC
Wang
Burnett
Joba
Hughes

If the 1-4 we have now don't allow us to give Hughes a shot at #5, we may as well not even have a farm.

Red Sox?

At first glance this is insanity. However, Moyer just got a two year deal which seems to make this oddly plausible.

Well if the Dodgers are offering up the much money for Pettitte, I am going to very angry..

That 36 million should be spent on Furcal, I think the Manny fund is a entirely different situation.

This is borderline heartbreaking.

This should be a clear sign to Cashman that it's time to move on.

I bet its the Dodgers... Torre loves him and Colletti is the new Brian Sabean. Paying outrageous amounts of cash to old players on the decline. ie. Andrew Jones, Casey Blake, Jason Schmidt, and now Andy Pettitte. LOL

Moyer got a 2-year deal because he is a work horse and has no signs of injury and his repertoire of pitches does not give him the same risk of injury that Pettites does . Andy's elbow has been hanging by a thread for 3 years now I really don't see a team offering him a 3 year deal when he might be one cutter away from the end of his career.

Andy the Yankees stuck by you last year through all that HGH bull. You owe it to the Yanks, they had your back while they let Clemens destroy his reputation.

Reading between the lines it sounds like he is saying to the yankees that he will take a paycut but not for just one year.

im thinkin its the braves, but maybe the dodgers

"I think sheets, burnett and joba in the same rotation is way too risky injury wise. We need a pettite or lowe"

True about the injury risk, but they do have long relievers on the team that have made starts and can take over for a brief period (Giese, Aceves, possibly Phil Coke was rumored to be a long reliever), not to mention Phil Hughes

I completely agree with 661 that if this is the Dodgers it would be borderline heartbreaking. I wouldn't be able to believe them giving Pettitte more than Furcal.

Sad, but true.

Do not forget Pierre, Luis Gonzalez, and NoGood I mean NoMar...

He is also rumored to be interested in Vizquel, Alou, and Stan Musial...

If I'm the Yankees, I call their bluff and tell him to go ahead & take the offer. You'll see how quickly they'll come running with their tail tucked between their legs!

Hmm, let's see here. We need to figure out which GM gives out contracts that are too long and/or cost too much money to players who are older, out of shape, misfit and/or overrated?

It's the Dodgers, that's for sure.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was the Mets. Stranger things have happened. But, whichever team is making the offer, if there is a team, can have him on those terms. They'll regret it.

YES! DAMN!

How can one post equally excite me and frustrate me at the same time? I've been saying all along, well, for a few days anyhow, that the Mets are perhaps the best (and only?) candidate for Lowe, who I really want for our rotation. Logic dictates that the other three teams who were high on Lowe, the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Phillies, would all be taken out of the bidding if they wound up getting the other players they were after. As a Met fan, I had hoped that the Yankees would actually get CC and AJ, knowing that if they did, they would probably go after Sheets for a shorter term contract and resign Pettitte to round out the rotation, which would then take them off the Lowe market, which of course, would be huge since they are the ones who scare Omar (and everyone else) the most. As for the RedSox, they are going hard after Texiera, and it looks like they will get him. If they do (then wow, what a lineup!), then they are likely to move away from Lowe. As for our rivales, the Phillies, who also wanted Lowe, wound up signing Ibanez and were hoping to sign Moyer, thus taking them out of the Lowe bidding. This would all take the three teams away from Lowe, thus both leaving Lowe available for the Mets and driving the price down. Add to this that Omar traded Schoenweiss to the Diamondbacks as a 2 mil. dollar salary dump, as opposed to using him to get Jason Marquis from the Cubs (and the Cubs would have even thrown money in the deal, not bad- 5 mil or so for a solid 5th starter), which led me to have strong suspicions that Omar was trying to free up some money to get Lowe instead of Perez.

Minaya seems to be playing the Lowe market just like he did the closer market, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we did wind up getting Lowe for a significantly cheaper deal than it seemed it would take to get him originally- can you say K-Rod, anybody? The same strategy could get Omar Derek Lowe for a sweet deal.

However, I found this news out first over on rotoworld.com, and I first read that the Phillies resigned Moyer, and I was like, YES!,
the Phillies are out of the Lowe market now. But then I saw the Pettitte rumor right afterwards, and it was a pretty obnoxious hit to the gut after I had just exhaled to say YES! for the Moyer signing. If Pettitte doesn't sign with the Yankees, there's an excellent chance the Yanks will go after both Sheets AND Lowe. That would suck, to say the least. Of course this rumor could be nothing, just Pettitte's people's way of getting that 12 ml. he wanted insead of the 10 mil. they offered.

We shall see, but I strongly feel that getting Lowe will give the Mets a very strong rotation to go with their impressive lineup, whereas Ollie would be too inconsistent, although it does often take lefties until their late 20's before the light bulb finally goes off- take a look at Randy Johnson's career, for example, and if Ollie did finally click over, given how young he still really is (doesn't it feel like the guy's been in the league for a long time?), he could be an amazing pitcher, dominant even, and from the left side! As for Wolf, well, he'd be really nice as a 5th starter, but no way would it make sense to have him as our #4 starter: Santana, Pelfrey,Maine, WOLF?, and Pitcher #5... this wouldn't be a particularly strong rotation. But I won't believe Minaya is actually going that route until I see it. Again, he did the same thing with K-Rod. He made everyone think he was willing to sign anyone that took the deal he was offering or the trade he was proposing, even though it would mean a significantly lesser closer in most of those cases... but he left just enough doubt in everyone's mind. He might be doing the same here. I hope so. I want Lowe! Let's turn that DAMN! into a YES! again.

Thanks for the memories, Andy.

there's a tasteless joke about HGH use in here somewhere but I'm not gonna say it.

Suuuuuure he does.

That's rich. Less and less does his supposed desire to play for NY or retire seem honest.

If he wants to squabble over $2 million and go to a team that won't be as good as NY, so be it.

I'm calling BS!

I wouldn't be surprised if he signed with the Dodgers on a 1 or 2 yr deal.

yeah the dodgers do love to do this crap....ive also heard rumors about them offering a contract to wally joyner haha

Giants on a 3 year deal. Why? Sabean isn't a good GM. Renteria for 2 and 18 in this market? Great move, why not see if two negatives can make a positive.

Pettite can't stay healthy 3 seasons...why pay him to play golf?

Pettitte... Come on, who gives an aging 4+ ERA pitcher, with one good pitch, 3 years. If anyone, it's the dodgers, and the amount is probably not accurate. Pettitte can keep his 4+ ERA, and find more than 10 million dollars somewhere else as long as he's not a yankee.

"Pettite can't stay healthy 3 seasons...why pay him to play golf?"

What reason do you have to believe that? He's made 31+ starts in 12 of his 14 seasons and hasn't missed time since 2004, which was due to an injury while batting.

I'm guessing if its true the Red Sox offered it to him. If its true then he would of accepted it already if their weren't something holding him back. Which would be the rivalry and his legacy. A one time Yankee hero could look like a washed up mercenary in a matter of weeks.

Andy would not joint the Red Sox for 2 million more a year. Period. If it's true it is the Dodgers and he may go to play with Joe again. I think more likely this is a bluff by his agents to eek an extra 2 mill from the Yanks.

I think it's the Braves. They are getting desperate for quality pitching.

Thanks for the memories, Andy. You said you would only wanted to play for the Yankees for the remainder of your career. But it sounds like you were only saying what the Yankees wanted to hear.

Now, we'll see if you'll keep your word.

He doesn't have another offer and IF he does he'd BETTER take it because its the land multi-year deal he'll ever get. I still see him coming back but if another team wants to offer him more he can leave. We'll still love him but he's not worth any more than $12M. If we had to go to $12 instead of $10 I'd be fine with that but NO MORE. We have youngsters and other FA and trade options. We dont need Andy but we'd like to have him back so if he really wants back FINE but we're not going to beg.
