« Six Suitors For Randy Johnson | Main | Cubs' Payroll Higher Than Expected »
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are eyeing Tigers players Jeff Larish and Matt Joyce as part of a potential Jack Wilson deal. They could get one of the two as well as a pitching prospect. The $7.85MM owed to Wilson remains an issue; it's not known how much the Bucs are willing to pick up.
The Tigers have other options, as they plan to meet with Adam Everett's agent next week.
Kovacevic adds that the Pirates removed Jason Davis and Raul Chavez from the 40-man roster today, creating two spots for future moves.

didn't anyone watch adam everett play last season? he didn't hit, at all, like he normally does. and his specialty, defense, was brought down because of shoulder problems. he couldn't even make the throw to first. yet people are still interested in him.

love the idea of larrish and joyce. larrish has power and can probably match laroches avg. joyce is a stud if the pirates can make room

I would love this deal for the Pirates. Glad to hear this type of stuff from someone as reliable Dejan.

If the Tigers got Wilson i would not give up Joyce. Larrish they can have, I would give Larrish and a mid level SP prospect. Thats all, if they dont like it then move on.
Worst case senario we dont do good this year (assuming we do) and get another high draft pick and get another SP to go with JV, Porcello, Crosby (assuming he pans out) and Gal.
We have our future SS waiting, and just needs a little more time to be a complete MLB SS. So no need to throw away valuable prospects for a stop loss

What possible use do the Pirates have for Larish? His MINOR league numbers don't measure up to Laroche's major league ones, and Pittsburgh would be just as well trying Pearce at first base if they intend to deal Laroche (which I haven't heard any mention of).
You need true offensive clout at first base, and Laroche is already at the tail end of expected production.
If this trade went down, Larish (who is already 26) will spin his wheels for another year down on the farm and then end up one of those blah bench players, if not a AAAA guy.
Posted by: Devlsh | December 06, 2008 at 12:41 AM
Larish and a decent SP prospect for Wilson and we can also throw in Ronnie Paulino. If the hold-up is Wilson's salary, the Pirates better eat it quicker than Paulino eats Twinkies.
Posted by: bigpat | December 06, 2008 at 12:43 AM
The Tigers would be stupid to give up Larish AND Joyce for Jack Wilson.
Posted by: Coxy75 | December 06, 2008 at 02:11 AM
The Tigers would be stupid to give up Joyce for Wilson period. I can understand Larish - Joyce is the LH power hitting OFer the Tigers have been seeking since Higgy.
It would be smarter to keep the prospects and go after Isturiz and platoon with Santiago. DD simply cannot repeat the same mistake he made last year.

"What possible use do the Pirates have for Larish? His MINOR league numbers don't measure up to Laroche's major league ones,:s"
So a .458 OPS is better than a .818 mark?
Posted by: vtadave | December 06, 2008 at 02:43 AM
I would hate to see him go in a way, but Larish is honestly expendable right now. Cabrera is in the way at 1st until 2015, and Inge is going to be at 3rd for the next couple years, so he really doesnt have a shot at being a started, just a bench guy. Joyce on the other hand may come in handy this year as the 4th OF if they do trade Thames for some relief help. I dont know what pitcher they would give up in the deal, but it certainly wont be Porcello. They will probably want Marte or Moscoso along with Larish or Joyce.
Posted by: hitman79 | December 06, 2008 at 02:43 AM
I like Larish's style, but as others said, there really isn't a spot for him on the Tigers. He could DH next year, but since anyone can do that, he isn't the only option they have.

If it really is possible for the Bucs to get Joyce, they should. I saw a few of his plays last year, and he hustles. Heck, he's got solid defense as well. He is someone they need, especially if they want to end their losing streak. He needs to cut down on his K-rate though, but other than that, he'd look good in LF for them.

I will toss in a few bucks myself if gets Wilson to Detroit instead of Los Angeles...

Any Pirate fans out there, how is Ronny Paulino as a catcher?
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 06, 2008 at 09:15 AM
Paulino is a acceptable defensive catcher and is capable of being a decent average guy but his ceiling is really an average MLB catcher.
Posted by: BucSox | December 06, 2008 at 09:20 AM
if the Pirates would have drafted Wieters they could use Paulino as a fill in the next year and could deal Doumit at his peak. Doumit could bring a king's ransom this year with all the catching vacancies. But alas they drafted Moskos....

Dejan Kovacevic - isn't he the one that said three times in the last week the Dodgers were after Wilson until Rosenthal, Gammons, and others all said the rumor was false and had been false since the offseason started?
That Dejan Kovacevic?
He's a good beat writer but he's the most unreliable source for Pirates rumors there is because he writes with a slanted agenda.
Posted by: redsman | December 06, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Thanks. Any chance of Paulino being traded?
Posted by: Cyyoung | December 06, 2008 at 10:02 AM
If the price tag is both Joyce and Larish...you might as well forget about it. They can have Larish and a mid level SP but no Joyce.
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 06, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Dejan is actually a very reliable source for rumors. He doesn't write with an agenda (he's often criticized management in the past for things such as shortcomings in the Dominican). He wasn't the only one to say the Dodgers were talking to the Pirates about Wilson as recently as last week though. There were a lot who heard that and a lot who said they heard otherwise. It'd be interesting to see who was right.
Posted by: jarms | December 06, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Zach Miner would probably be a better target for the Pirates IMO. Pitching is what they need more than anything else.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 10:11 AM
This looks like a disaster waiting to happen in Detroit- even compared to last year's 74-88 debacle. I would rather see the Tigers sign Everett or even Nomar Garciaparra than see this trade go through.
Posted by: icordonbleu | December 06, 2008 at 10:11 AM
I like the Miner idea too... Clete Thomas and Miner goes down better in my book then Joyce and Larish.
Posted by: icordonbleu | December 06, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Okay, just read the article... didn't understand this at first. Still, Miner and Thomas sounds good.
Posted by: icordonbleu | December 06, 2008 at 10:15 AM
VTA Dave, you quoted the line for the wrong Laroche.
Adam Laroche posted an .832 OPS, which is, as I said, better than Larish's MINOR league numbers.
The Pirates have no use for Larish.

"Thanks. Any chance of Paulino being traded?"
Actually, yes.
http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081201&content_id=3696898&vkey=news_pit&fext=.jsp&c_id=pit
In a nutshell, the article mentions Paulino as attracting "some external intrest". I could really see the Pirates trading him.

"Thanks. Any chance of Paulino being traded?"
I am pretty sure they would like to move Paulino if possible they have Doumit and they also got Diaz who seems to be the backup for next year.
Posted by: BucSox | December 06, 2008 at 11:33 AM
guapo lets avoid talking about the sped pirates drafting moskas and not wieters
Posted by: Josh Sharpless | December 06, 2008 at 11:37 AM
If the Bucs can get Miner and Joyce they need to jump on it.
Posted by: We Traded Rameriez For What? | December 06, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Seriously. Stop bringing up Moskos. The management that made that pick is gone.
"Thanks. Any chance of Paulino being traded?"
Yes. Especially if it means the Pirates can get their hands on Joyce or Larish.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 06, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Screw that. Unless the Pirates want to include Ronny Paulino in the deal, I'd rather have Santiago platoon with the bat boy then give up Larish AND Joyce.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | December 06, 2008 at 02:42 PM
It won't be for Joyce and Larish. One of those two and a pitching prospect.
Posted by: Calriver | December 06, 2008 at 08:58 PM
If the Pirates can get a bag of baseballs for Ronny Paulino I would make the trade in a heartbeat...and consider it a steal for the Bucs.
