I realized it would be easier to put all of these "avoided arbitration" stories into one post and keep updating it. So starting now, we'll do that. We'll use another post for the non-tenders.
- The Mets tendered contracts to Ryan Church, John Maine, Pedro Feliciano, Duaner Sanchez and Jeremy Reed.
- Eric Bruntlett and Clay Condrey were signed, and Ryan Madson, Jayson Werth, Joe Blanton, Chad Durbin, Ryan Howard, Greg Dobbs, Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino were tendered contracts.
- The Angels are bringing back all their guys - Chone Figgins, Robb Quinlan, Maicer Izturis, Ervin Santana and Mike Napoli.
- Brandon Backe, Geoff Geary, Wandy Rodriguez, Tim Byrdak, Jose Valverde and Humberto Quintero were tendered contracts by the Astros.
- The Dodgers tendered contracts to Russell Martin, Andre Ethier and Jonathan Broxton. Jason Repko too.
- The Padres tendered contracts to Scott Hairston, Jody Gerut, Luis Rodriguez and Heath Bell.
- The Cubs signed Chad Gaudin and Neal Cotts and tendered contracts to Kevin Gregg, Michael Wuertz, Ronny Cedeno. Gaudin and Cotts signed one-year deals, for $2MM and $1.1MM respectively. We also have word they signed Reed Johnson for $3MM.
- The Braves tendered contracts to Kelly Johnson, Matt Diaz, Jeff Francoeur, Mike Gonzalez, Omar Infante and Casey Kotchman
- The Nationals signed Willie Harris to a two-year, $3MM contract. They also tendered contracts to Ryan Zimmerman, Josh Willingham, Scott Olsen and Shawn Hill.
- C. Trent Rosecrans e-mails that the Reds will tender Edwin Encarnacion a contract.
- The Brewers tendered contracts to Prince Fielder, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Rickie Weeks, Dave Bush, and Seth McClung.
- The Blue Jays tendered contracts to Jason Frasor, Brian Tallet, Brandon League, and Jose Bautista.
- The Giants tendered Jack Taschner a contract.
- The Indians tendered a contract to Kelly Shoppach.
- Twins tendered contracts to Jason Kubel and Matt Guerrier.
- A's signed Rob Bowen.
- White Sox signed DeWayne Wise for $550K and Wilson Betemit for $1.3MM.
- Tigers signed Ramon Santiago for $825K.

Wow, Wilson Betemit is a nice bench player for 1.3 mill. Kenny Williams comes up with some nice moves from time to time.

I'm also a big fan of Wise coming back to the Sox. Sometimes it's a bit sketchy finding a place for a 4th or even 5th outfielder, but he was pretty damn good last year.

Yeah Wilson's time with the yanks was not one of great thunder and excitement.

Kubel deserves a longterm deal.
Posted by: twinsfan | December 12, 2008 at 03:28 PM
Kubel still needs to show for another year that his knee really is 100% healthy and that he can get through an entire season. Even if 75% of his at bats are from the DH, and his time to time stints in the outfield.

I was hoping Tallet would be non-tendered.

I'm hoping Frasor gets traded. Maybe for a low level prospect, at least.
The Jays have some young guys they can bring up to have a taste of the majors: Fabio Castro, Ricky Romero, Davis Romero, Jamie Vermilyea
And if they don't do well, JP can always go and find a veteran to add to the 'pen, like he did with Camp and Parrish.

Has anyone heard about a deal between Manny Rameriez and the Cardinals my dad received an email from a co-woker stating he agreed with the Cardinals 5yrs for 125 million

Unrelated but Scott Schoeneweis
was traded to the D-backs for Connor Robertson.

Adam, that is a total bs rumor that your dad received. The Cards haven't even been negotiating with his agent, and would never give out that long of a contract to a hitter Manny's age...unless his last name was Pujols.

This post is a little misleading. Its labeled players tended contracts, but then talks about players avoiding arbitration.
A player who is tendered isn't avoiding arbitration. Arbitration eligible players have to agree to a contract and can't just be tendered by the team.
This post contains two seperate types of transactions.

What about Dodger's OF Jason Repko?
Posted by: Alyn | December 12, 2008 at 09:30 PM
The Cardinals are actually trying to move an outfielder, either Ankiel or Ludwick, to make room for Rasmus.

much as I love him, Jim Hendry can be maddening sometimes. he can't find roster space to protect Donnie Veal, but he offers a contract to Ronny Cedeno? oy...

Petrie
Cedeno is still a fairly valuable peice. He is fine defensivly and if he can learn to hit he could start on several teams. He is a nice bench Middle infielder too. I can see this. Veal while nice was more expendable.

I would assume that the Marlins tendered contracts to Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu, Cody Ross, Jeremy Hermida, Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Alfredo Amezaga, Logan Kensing, Joe Nelson and Dallas McPherson.

outfielders Rick Ankiel, Chris Duncan and Ryan Ludwick and pitchers Brad Thompson and Todd Wellemeyer, were tendered contracts.

I'd prefer to keep Cedeno, yes, but to me Veal had more long term value as either a reliever or starter, and also had better trade value down the road. I just think that if I had to pick between the two of them, I'd have used the roster spot on Veal and taken my chances on resigning Cedeno as a free agent.
