11:46pm: Amusing story from Joe McDonald:
A group of Cincinnati Reds personnel, including manager Dusty Baker, were playing roulette Tuesday night. A member of the contingent yelled "Put it on No. 5 for Rocco Baldelli" and now it appears the Reds are having talks with his agent.
McDonald adds that the Red Sox have apparently stepped back with their interest in Baldelli. Buster Olney wrote on Monday that he'd be shocked if Boston didn't sign Baldelli.
9:24pm: According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds talked to the agents for Rocco Baldelli and Juan Rivera (the agents initiated). Pat Burrell's agents also want to meet. Fay says the Reds have at least $10MM to spend.
MLB.com's Mark Sheldon adds that Moises Alou's agent contacted Walt Jocketty, but the Reds aren't interested. Nor are they interested in Garrett Anderson. Sheldon adds that there's been "no real activity towards reviving the Jermaine Dye deal."

I wouldn't mind Baldelli but would perfer him as something of a split timer with Dickerson since I don't think he'd hold up well starting every day in LF. Have no interest in Rivera and Burrell is a right handed older version of Dunn. I rather have Dunn back. Gald to see the Reds have no interest in the near done OFs

i think Rivera is better than Burrell and should be highly considered. he could easily have a breakout year batting 4th inbetween Votto and Bruce in GABP

Rivera better than Burrell? No.

Moises Alou and Garrett Anderson are old (right down the Reds alley) but because they have not previously played for Toothpick Baker, the Reds have no interest in them.
Now, if they were old, over the hill, unemployed, no other team wanted them BUT they had previously had Baker as their Manager, THEN the Reds would have plenty of interest in them (see Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston Jr and Paul Bako - 2008, JHJ 2009).

Pat Burrell is a name.
Ca$htellini likes "name" players and Managers and doesn't mind overpaying for them (even if there are better, less expensive options out there). It makes it easier for his PR and Marketing Departments to schedule Bobblehead Nights.
Guys I would rather have than Burrell (in no particular order)? Manny R, Alex Rios, Josh Willingham, Juan Rivera, Jeff Francouer, Jeremy Hermida, Randy Winn, Melky Cabrera, Bobby Abreu. Give me some more time and I can dig up a few more.
However, Burrell DOES have a World Series ring and THAT is something Adam Dunn can not say. So there is another difference between the two.
By the way, if it came down to Burrell or Dunn, I would take Burrell every time.

Rivera is a much better option for the Reds at least...
he had a breakout year then broke his leg, then had limited playing time.
in a full time role for 7 million for 2 years maybe....he could hit .280/30/100 pretty simply between Votto and Bruce.

In a vacuum is Rivera better than Burrell? No, probably not (although he has to play better D than Burrell, right?)...
For the money, however, give me Rivera. The upside is very real- look at his last completely healthy season. Burrell is going to cost at least 10 mil a year. Rivera won't even be half that.

Baldelli was the one free agent outfielder that I wanted to target going into the off season, I really hope this works out and the Reds sign him!

"Have no interest in Rivera and Burrell is a right handed older version of Dunn. I rather have Dunn back."
Schellis, you're one of the biggest Dunn homers to ever walk the earth, yet you wouldnt want a right-handed version of him (Burrell)?
That makes alot of sense!

Schellis how dumb do you have to be. Im from philly and im a phillies fan. at one point in the season (very early) but at one point everyone was sayin this is his breakout year and it was. with out him you think we woulda won ....NO!

Why is this RH thing so important?
There will be 4 Right handed hitters (EE, BP, Hernandez/Hanigan, Kepp/Gonzalez) on the Reds starting eight, 5 if you count the pitcher. Another RH would make it 6 out of 9.... Votto, Bruce, Dickerson our only starting LH possibilites.
Rivera would be the best out of the bunch. If Burrell is considered just go get Dunn...but I rather move on from that one.
I think Walt with blindside everyone with someone from left field, literally. The RH/LH isn't as big of a deal as everyone is making it. Walt could just saying that to keep the rumors away from who he really wants....just a thought.
