« Marti, Gomez Defect From Cuba | Main | Dodgers Interested In Dunn, Abreu »
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies' pursuit for back-end starting pitching.
The Rox "remain firmly in the mix" for free agent Tim Redding, who also has the Mets and Orioles in pursuit. Renck suggests the Orioles' signing of Mark Hendrickson could cause them to back off, though Jeff Zrebiec wrote today that the Orioles want to add at least two starters.
Jason Marquis is also on Colorado's radar, but they "can't absorb hardly any" of his $9.875MM salary. The Cubs are seemingly looking to save at least $3-4MM here. Renck adds that Josh Fogg is another possibility for the Rockies, on a minor league deal.

What the heck is the delay in signing Fogger back? He is a steal at $1m or so. Just watched a rerun of his complete game where he faced the minimum 27 batters (3 double plays).
He is a proven Coors Field pitcher. Get it done.

What's Colorado's deal with getting hard-ons for mediocre (at best) pitchers? Fogg? Marquis? Redding? Rusch? Embree?

Well I can sortof understand Fogg...

Fogg is a fail of a pitcher. He has a 5 ERA each year with us, and now that he's older and less effective, the Rockies shouldn't sign him. Marquis is definitely their best option, and should fork over the money to the Cubs along with a low-mid level prospect so they can get him. Redding should be the Rockies second option, and if we have to resort to Fogg, we might as well just go to Spring Training with Smith/Morales/De la Rosa rounding out our rotation. I still think the Rockies should use the money from Matt Holliday to get Sheets or Ramirez, but obviously the Monfarts want to pocket that money.

Colorado is really trying to bring Fogg back? And the fans want it to happen? Wow. Fogg isn't any good. Give the Rockies a pitching staff of 12 Josh Foggs and they'll never finish in the upper half of that division (possibly the weakest division in all of baseball). If fans are going to base their signings on one game then why not go ahead and sign Jack Morris? If you're going to overlook everything else you might as well overlook age as well.

Anyone think the Mets may back off of Redding now that they have a realistic shot of bringing in two of their three targets for the 2-hole (most likely Lowe and one of Wolf or Perez)? Maybe if the Mets sign Redding, they'll be saving up for Manny!

"Jason Marquis is also on Colorado's radar, but they "can't absorb hardly any" of his $9.875MM salary."
That is a load of bull. They're willing to go into a bidding war for Tim Redding for 2-3 million, yet they can't fork up an extra million for Marquis? Such BS propaganda by the Monfarts, notorious hypocritical owners who are cheapos.

"can't absorb hardly any" = atrocious English. It implies that they can absorb any of it, and only can't absorb a minimal amount.

i agree with you.i mean come on.marquis for 5 million or redding on a couple million 2 year deal.whats the holdup?im a cubs fan and will say that marquis is an excellent 5th starter.i mean for the money,he is very durable, eats up lots of innings, never gets hurt.and he can hit to boot.i dont even want the cubs to get rid of him,but we need to free up money for a lefty power hitter.and we have depth.if the rox sign that scrub over marquis, they deserve to finish in last.

All the power to the Cubbies then, hopefully they will keep this discard then instead of convincing someone (along with the incentive of at LEAST 1/2 his salary)and he will be the Cubs #5 in 2009 as well and have his normal .500 record and 5.00 ERA. Hardly worth 6+ million salary if the cubbies only chip in 3 million, much less any kind of prospect in return.

How about:
Marquis + $5.5 million = Seth Smith

No way. The Rockies value him more than a trade chip, and believe either he or Stewart will be the starting LF in 2009, depending on Helton. Trading Smith would create a hole for the Rockies.
