Tigers, Mets Interested In Wood?

According to Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Tigers and Mets have shown the most interest in free agent closer Kerry Wood.  He expects Wood to sign a two-year deal with a third-year vesting option.  De Luca also notes that Wood never conveyed to the Cubs a willingness to take a one-year deal.  Still, the Cubs surely had read the quotes by the time they decided not to offer him arbitration.

If I am the Mets, I am all over Wood on a two year deal with a vesting option.

I love that move, save a little money and its possible that in a few years Wood will have been the best FA closer this year.

What free agent closer hasn't been linked to the Mets. They can't sign them all. Or trade for them all if you believe any of the Jenks/Putz rumors.

First time I have heard the Tigers linked to Wood. Like the idea myself, but it would pretty much mean that the Tigers would be standing pat for the remainder of free agency.

Any other moves the Tigers make will have to be via trade. Personally, I see the Tigers pretty much standing pat (with maybe another addition to the bullpen, maybe catcher) and wait for Sheff's money to come off the books and try to make a bigger splash next year.

Unless, of course, they trade Mags this offseasn.

Wood looks like he will be a much better value than Fuentes or K-Rod - less cash, fewer years, and no draft picks.

I'm not buying Wood's sudden durability, unless he's willing to sign for that much less then Fuentes or K-Rod, I'm not that interested. Something like 2/14-16.

Dodgers should be interested in Wood.

2/18 with a third year vesting option at 10 mil seems about right to me.

Mets would be very smart if they did this IMHO. I have always thought they were the best fit.

Venom - that's certainly the biggest risk in signing Wood considering his extensive injury history. However, it sounds like he IS willing to sign for much less than Fuentes or Rodriguez if this article is credible.

I think a five-year deal for Rodriguez would be riskier than a two-year contract for Wood. All signs are pointing to decline with Rodriguez - despite the gaudy save total last year, if you value that sort of thing - and it looks like the workload and hideous mechanics might be catching up with him.

"De Luca also notes that Wood never conveyed to the Cubs a willingness to take a one-year deal. Still, the Cubs surely had read the quotes by the time they decided not to offer him arbitration."

Thank you. I'm not the only one not buying it.

Wood's durability has come from him not being a starter any more. I believe he is the best closer value out there since he won't require many years and would be able to handle the pressure of a big city.

"Wood's durability has come from him not being a starter any more. "

Bull. His sudden durability is a fluke.

Maybe, but it's become painfully apparent that it's not going to take a 5 year deal to sign Rodriguez, and I'd give K-Rod 3 years over giving Wood 2 at a high salary anyday of the week.

Well...he did miss an entire month in 2008 with a blister.

Would you give K-Rod a 3 year deal at 12 or 13 mil a year that will cost you a pick...

or

Wood a 2/18 deal that has a vesting option for a third year and doesn't cost a pick?

I'll take Wood all day.

Without a doubt in my mind, I would take K-Rod in that scenario Aduncaroo. Not even close.

I have to agree with Aduncaroo. Even if you could get K-Rod for 3/39 plus the picks.

I think I still would go with Wood at 2/18 and no picks.

Don't listen to all the smoke and mirrors. The Mets want KRod and they will get him. He and Fuentes are about the same, cosidering durability but KRod is only 26 years old. Fuentes is 33. No way the Mets take a gamble on another 30+ closer, if they don't have to. They're mearly trying to drive down the price of KRod.

I also think they'll sign Wood but as a set up man. Wood no longer has the durability to be a full time closer. If he signs with the Mets as a set up guy, it's a great sign for NY.

Without a doubt. Agreed. Even if Wood cost the same amount of money for the same amount of years and you would lose the same amount of picks, I still probably choose Wood. With all of the reason's you listed why Wood makes more sense, it is a no brainer. As far as the free agent closers go, my priority would be 1) Wood 2) Hoffman 3) Fuentes
4) K-Rod.

Wood no longer has the durability to be the full time closer? What does that even mean? He has only been a full time closer for one year. I understand if you don't trust his durability, but you make it sound as if he was a reliable closer for 10 years and now he isn't/ He was a walking injury as a starter forever but since joining the bullpen he has managed to stay relatively healthy, and the blister thing is just something that can happen to anybody. It is not an indicator of being injury prone.

Really? So you will take the guy with the worse stuff, for more money, more years, and giving up draft picks over the guy with the better stuff, for less years, less money, and no draft picks? Um.... why?

I'm all for Detroit giving Wood a chance.

The Mets should go after Wood at 4 years and $40 mil. He will be more reliable than K-Rod.

I can't wait to get my Tigers' Wood jersey.

Can the Tigers afford Wood? He'll probably demand around $10MIL a year. I'd love to see him in the D, but I'm not sure that it will happen.

I'm with Nrmax here...what does this even mean? He just was a full time closer and handled the role very, very well. Yes, he had a blister. Its a blister dude...not a torn labrum.

If you want to say you are worried he might have arm issues again...fine, that could be valid. But I still think he will be the better value, and I think he is a great fit with the mets.

The Cubs were stupid to let Wood go and even nore idiotic not to offer arbitration. The Cubs bullpen will be interesting - no good lefty, an unproven closer in Marmol and a pitcher in Gregg who isn't the answer at all.

I am a lifelong Cubs fan, and let me tell you, the Cubs should've gotten rid of Wood after his injury in 2004. He had a good year last year, but at the same time, he gave up tons of hits in the ninth and blew waaaaaay too many saves. I was always scared as hell when he pitched the ninth in a close game. I'd say to myself, we need to be leading by at least 3 runs into the ninth for me to feel comfortable. He's a great guy, and an above average closer when HEALTHY. Good luck having him on the DL whomever signs him.

Omar Mineya and the Mets should jump on this...Wood isn't a bad closer and he comes alot cheaper then K-Rod.
