« Odds And Ends: Johnson, Bloomquist, Smoltz | Main | Fay, Jocketty Discuss Reds: Baldelli, Abreu, Nady, Swisher »
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the D'Backs plan on going after many free agent starters in hopes that one of them will sign at an affordable rate. Arizona appears to have $4-5MM to spend on an arm.
The club has traditionally avoided incentive-based deals because they bring financial uncertainty, but Piecoro sees "indications the team might be willing to relax its policy." Piecoro names Ben Sheets, Pedro Martinez and Jason Jennings as possible fits for the club, but those pitchers are considered health risks, so incentive-based deals could work for them.
To Sheets's credit, he did make 31 starts last year, so he's likely to get much stronger offers than the other two.

I would Sign Sheets if i were them!
Webb
Haren
Sheets
NOT too bad!
Posted by: Kulaid | January 10, 2009 at 01:06 PM
They should just sign Sheets:
Webb
Haren
Sheets
Davis
Scherzer
that's a wrap.
Posted by: bigpat | January 10, 2009 at 01:09 PM
Scherzer also..

Ben Sheets should join Matt Holliday and Jason Giambi as the A's new additions.
He's too expensive for the DBacks. But, with Giambi's cheap contract, the A's can afford Sheets. Especially with such nice lack of interest in him.
And yes, I'm going to toot that horn until Sheets signs.

"To Sheets's credit, he did make 31 starts last year, so he's likely to get much stronger offers than the other two."
You could probably also add the fact that Ben Sheets is a far, far, far, far better pitcher than the other two when healthy.
When healthy, Sheets is a very legitimate ace, with a big fastball/curve combo. Martinez and Jennings don't even come close to that upside. Honestly I think Sheets is more likely to churn out an ace-like season than Martinez/Jennings are likely to churn out a #3/4 starter-like seasons, especially Jennings.

That would be just horrible if the DBacks went out and signed Sheets. It just irks me when there's a starter who started for the NL in the All Starter just waiting for phone call from a team. If the Monfarts cared about the Rockies at all, they would go out and get Sheets for 2/20 before the DBacks do because ANY rotation that has Sheets pitching 3rd in the rotation will win the NL West. And don't give me bull that the Rockies don't have any money to spend, because all the money that has been earned because of the World Series run has been pocketed. DBacks, if you fork up the money for Sheets, you guys deserve to win the division.

All Star Game**
Posted by: bballrox4717 | January 10, 2009 at 01:31 PM
Webb
Haren
Sheets
Davis
Scherzer
"that's a wrap."
You could make a case for that being the best 1-5 in baseball with Sheets.

Sheets to the Rockies on a 1-2 year deal makes perfect sense as well. Move Atkins to LF, Stewart to 3B, and let Gonzalez man CF (GREAT defensively).
And yeah, the Rox have the money to spend.
A rotation of
Sheets
Cook
Jimenez
Francis
De La Rosa/Morales/Smith/Reynolds
is pretty solid.

Melonis Rex: All the guys in the fifth starter role would be in triple A, considering that we're paying Marquis 5 mill to be our #4 or #5 starter

Randy Wolf?

I hope my Nats sign him.
Lannan
Sheets
Olsen
Cabrera
Balester/Zimmermann/Hill/Martis

Plus the Rockies's 1st round pick is protected. A 2nd rounder for Sheets? Yes, especially considering we have a sandwich pick and 2nd round pick for Fuentes. O'Dowd's primary focus this offseason was acquiring somebody with top of the roation talent. That never comes cheap in a trade, and the salary would be too much too. Sheets has been our best option since Vizcaino blew the Rockies's last game.

I think the Yankees should take a chance on Pedro.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | January 10, 2009 at 02:20 PM
The A's first round pick is protected for the A's to. With Holliday, Giambi and Sheets, the A's should win the division.
Maybe the A's get Donald too since he's blocked by Utley/Giles. Then it would be a lock.

This is probably the same thinking the Indians should have.

Tim,
Did I just see a Rumor that had Sheets and 4-5M in the same sentence?
This is either crazy ridiculous or Omar better beat that offer to have him on the mets.(obviously this hasnt yet been offered) Bench him for the entire year until the playoffs if you have to, he is still worth more than that.
Posted by: Fish&Mets | January 10, 2009 at 04:01 PM
oh and just because everyone else seems to want to project rotations:
Santana
Sheets
Lowe
Pelfrey
Maine
Best rotation in baseball?
Posted by: Fish&Mets | January 10, 2009 at 04:03 PM
Lowe and Sheets? It would never happen.
Santana
Sheets
Maine
Redding
Pelfrey
Solid rotation and much more likely rotation. I still would doubt the Mets taking a chance on Sheets.
Being a very sad Cincinnati Reds fan I can't help but imagine a rotation of
Harang
Sheets
Volquez
Cueto
Owings
That will ultimately never happen..
Let me take a scenario that will never happen 1 step further but can you imagine if the Cubs traded for Peavy, acquired Sheets at a very reduced rate and used lilly to trade for a legitimate solution for CF.
Zambrano
Peavy
Harden
Sheets
Dempster
No rotation in baseball would even have a chance.
Posted by: Gleb | January 10, 2009 at 05:13 PM
I still hope the Yankees take a chance and throw an offer to Ben Sheets. Nothing more than a 2-year deal, though.
Sabathia
Wang
Burnett
Sheets
Joba
Great rotation. I know Burnett and Sheets are considered "injury risks," but the Yankees have the depth to fill in any potential holes (Hughes, Aceves, Kennedy... and others)
Posted by: Agent | January 10, 2009 at 05:19 PM
IF the Cubs signed sheets, then please no more peavy. I would rather have sheets/marshall and harden/marshall and maybe keep vitters for the future so we can trade Aramis, tehn to trade for peavy and be done.

Did I just see a Rumor that had Sheets and 4-5M in the same sentence?
No, it just stated that it looks like the DBacks have 4-5 mill to spend. My guess is Sheets is looking to have a salary of at least 8 mill a year, and there probably would be incentives after that. my guess is that he goes for 10 mill, the market will pick up for him eventually. So far, it seems like the Brewers, Rangers, and the Yankees have stated some interest and have been linked to him at some point. I could safely say that Sheets to the DBacks is pure speculation at this point, considering the cost. my question would be: Why would the Dbacks sign Sheets to a 1/10 or 2/20 mill deal when they could've had a more consistent Randy Johnson for cheaper? He may not be as good as Sheets now, but you could pencil in 20 starts at least for Johnson next year. Sheets is still really good, but he hasn't been giving a consistent 30 starts a year to the Brewers. he's a MAJOR injury risk. A Sheets signing has more upside, but at least with Johnson you know what you get.

The D-Backs only have Davis under contract for one more season, so they might be able to give Sheets a large incentive offer or a large backloaded contract.
Posted by: Serg Rush | January 11, 2009 at 05:47 PM
I agree with serg and if the Dbacks gain a pitching prospect from the red sox he will replace davis next year or possible parker if he is ready.
