« Week in Review: 1/4 - 1/10 | Main | Tigers After Affordable Lefty John Parrish »
A couple weeks ago, we covered Cuban stars Yadel Marti and Yasser Gomez defecting to the United States (by way of the Dominican Republic). Laura Albanese at Newsday has an update on the pair, and their hopes to make it to the big leagues.
The two hope to be represented by Jaime Torres, agent of Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Contreras. Torres says they're both Major League caliber and are capable of playing in the big leagues immediately. They're currently working out in Melville, NY.
Marti, 29, is hailed as one of Cuba's best pitchers. The righty was their ace in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, throwing 12.2 scoreless innings. Gomez, 28, is a speedy outfielder and career .331 hitter in Cuba. He hit .397 over a 66-game span in Cuba's 2008 national series tournament.
In the video on the right side of the Newsday article, the two say they're thankful to have a chance to play in the Majors, and are open to any teams because they're playing to support their families. They do, however, specifically mention the Yankees, White Sox, and Red Sox by name.

After we get rid of Nady and Swisher to Nationals and get Manny to play left Damon to play center and new outfielder and sign the pitcher

"I hope Epstien goes after Marti. It would be better for the Red Sox to be players in the Cuban market sooner rather than later."
Agreed. I believe the Obama administration will finally end this useless Cuban boycott. Having one the team (besides Lowell, who is Cuban, but grew up in PR) would be a magnet, just like Dice-K has been.

I will be extremely suprised if both of these guys are not on the white sox roster come spring training. They play the two positions that the sox need most and i would highly doubt that we are not their first choice

They're in America now. Subject them to the June draft.

I just have to point out how ridiculous it is that the Yankees fan thinks money is the only factor in signing a player. YOU CAN'T BUY EVERYONE! You can only have the past-their-prime-over-priced-former-all-stars. When can we get a salary cap so it can become perfectly obvious that New York and Boston don't know how to manage a team? C.C. will get hurt, collect a salary for 2 years and pitch maybe 3 games and then be a shadow of the pitcher he used to be (see Bartolo Colon). Jeter is on the decline and A-Rod still can't do anything in the post-season. Not to mention that signing Teixeira was a complete waste. Where is Damon going to play now that he is slow, or Posada now that he can't catch without getting hurt?
