White Sox Thinking Long-Term With Youngsters?

MLB.com's Scott Merkin spoke with White Sox GM Ken Williams on Friday.  The general manager hinted that he's not planning on rushing into long-term contract talks with young players like John Danks, Carlos Quentin or Gavin Floyd.

"You are way, way too far ahead there," Williams told Merkin. "I have to look at how the Dow Jones did today and see the general state of the economy before we start committing large sums of money out there."

Assitant GM Rick Hahn provided a more optimistic outlook, noting that multi-year contract talks don't typically take place in early February.  "Historically, you talk about it in Spring Training, in a more relaxed atmosphere," Hahn said. "There has to be a meeting of the minds, with a willingness also on the part of the player and the agent."

It would be great to say all of them, Alexei included to be offered 4 year extensions.

Finally some major White Sox news...not. But seriously it would not be a bad idea, but lets see how they perform in the first half first. Quentin, Floyd and Danks need to still prove they can do it beyond one campaigs. Odds are at least one of them will have a sophmore slump.

If Danks was going to have a sophomore slump, it would have been last year as it was his second year as a full time starter. Quentin and Floyd could possibly slump this year, but I think they have good years.

It would be very cool to see Danks locked up long term. He could be the ace that we build our rotation around for the foreseeable future.

Later,
Aaron

OfficerRon - I think Floyd is the guy who is going to slump. Danks and Q are studs.

If Gavin Floyd repeats last year, I'll eat my Sox hat.

There is no doubt Q and Danks are the real deal.

I want to see Alexei a little more patient at the plate before committing long-term.

FYI, Quentin is no sophomore...

Neither is floyd

I think Floyd will prove he's for real too. I think in two or three years we will have one of the nastiest 1 2 rotation spots in baseball in Danks and Floyd. You just don't throw two near no-no's and put up a sub 4 ERA if you're not the real deal.

If you look at the guys who have break out years and then falter, they almost always have a stretch in the season where they falter. Floyd was consistently strong all year long. He never had that slump that those fringe players have. He had three starts all season where he pitched fewer than 5 innings, and only 8 starts where he gave up more than 3 earned runs. He allowed a large number of home runs which is worrisome, but he also pitches in the Cell, and any pitcher there will give up home runs. Do I think he's a future Cy Young winner, probably not, but he is a solid pitcher.

Later,
Aaron

The Sox have Dayan Viciedo, Brent Lillibridge, Gordan Beckham, Chris Getz who do yall think will make the starting lineup?

I think Floyd regresses a bit, but still is a solid BOR starter (which is worth a ton). That might land him in Ozzie Guillen's doghouse though. Since we all know what happens to players who end up in that house, this could get interesting.

I REALLY think an extension for John Danks is a great idea. He's a solid pitcher and has established himself. I do think he will be the center of the Sox rotation for a while, barring a trade.

If no moves are made before spring training, I think the team looks like this:

Lineup
1/CF - Owens
2/C - Pierzinski
3/LF - TCQ
4/DH - Thome
5/RF - Dye
6/1B - Konerko
7/SS - Ramirez
8/3B - Fields
9/2B - Getz

Rotation
Buehrle
Floyd
Danks
Colon
Richard

Bullpen
Jenks - CL
Linebrink - SU
Dotel - SU
Thornton - SU
Russell - MR
Carrasco - MR
Marquez - LR

Bench
OF - Anderson
IF - Betemit
C - Flowers

Later,
Aaron

Out of the 4 you mentioned BravesFan I think only Getz is starting in the majors this year. Next year I see Dayan at first, Beckham at third, and Getz at second, but that is after they develop in the minors this year. Lillibridge will serve as a sub

I agree except Flowers shouldn't be on the bench. He should be in AA/AAA starting full time. You don't bring up top prospects just to sit them on the bench.

Tough,

Yeah, 2010 is going to be interesting. You've got Thome's departure leaving a hole at DH and leaving us in need of the much coveted left handed power. You've got the possible departure of Dye, leaving LF open (assuming TCQ moves to RF). Assuming Getz does well this year, you've got an infield logjam with Ramirez unlikely to be moved, and Getz at second, Konerko at first etc. Konerko could move to DH, as could Dye if his option is picked up. Things could get very hairy.

Rex,

Yeah, I just kinda threw a name in there for bench catcher. Now that I think about it it will probably be Lucy. It will have to be one of the two, because they are the only right handed catchers we have. Ozzie likes to have a righty to throw in against left handed pitchers.

Later,
Aaron

If there is one thing in this league that isn't hard to acquire its catchers. Is it rare to have a great defensive and offensive Catcher? yes, Very. But there are a ton of catchers out there that are average/above average talent that could be acquired with AA level prospects. Not to mention, KW needs to feel comfortable that the backup can get the job done if A.J goes down.

"The Sox have Dayan Viciedo, Brent Lillibridge, Gordan Beckham, Chris Getz who do yall think will make the starting lineup?"

In my humble opinion, Viciedo and Beckham will be starters but not until 2010. Because Konerko will probably still be around, I see Viciedo in LF initially and depending on how well Fields plays, Beckham at either 2B or 3B... maybe even SS if Ramirez can't cut it and is moved back to 2B.

I know others will disagree but unless a trade is made, I see Getz and Lillibridge platooning a 2B this year.

How about you... are you happy with the moves the Braves have made this offseason?

Ok, I'm a huge white sox fan, but this must be said.

I'm TIRED of all the gavin floyd love. Did anybody actually take a look at his stats? He had 19 unearned runs last year. That number is rediculously high for a pitcher. No pitcher should have double digit unearned runs. Assume those runs were earned, his ERA was 4.67.

None of that matters when you win 17 games.

I'm excited about our moves this off-season!! We got Lowe, and Vasquez from yall. We fixed the rotation, still needing a LFer but it's gone good this off season.

BTW, what's some tips on Javy Vasquez?

assuming those unearned runs were outs like they were suppose to his production would have been that much better

What about Jermaine Dye for Brian Roberts straight up?

whitesoxpride: that has to be one of the dumbest comments ive seen on here

Also, sorry about the double post, but Dayan Viceido will not be moved to LF. If you have read anything about him they guy is going to have a body type that restricts his fielding abilities, hence me believing he is going to move to first base when Konerko cannot hold that job anymore. If he is in the majors while Pauly can still field the bag he is going to be limited to a DH.

The biggest problem I have with Gavin Floyd is that his best pitch is also his most inconsistent.

Curveball pitchers live on the edge because when they throw it like Bert Blyleven, they are unhittable but when they hang it ......it's bye bye.

Also, curveball pitchers tend to avoid their best pitch when runners are on base (especially third) because too often the pitch bounces in. I have no idea if there is a stat kept for this, but I'd be willing to bet that Floyd's batting average against is much higher when he's pitching out of the stretch because of the curveball / wild pitch correlation.

Honestly, I think you guys got a great deal on Vazquez. He's a strong pitcher who was in the mix leading the league in strikeouts for a good part of the early season. He can be a little streaky, and last year he struggled to show up in the big games, but when he's on he's filthy. I would say he's a strong number 3 or 4.

Later,
Aaron

I think we have him second behind Lowe

"BTW, what's some tips on Javy Vasquez?"

Posted by: Bravesfan10

He's the perfect, though costly #5 pitcher because he eats a lot of innings and is usually around .500. He is definitely an underachiever in big games and that can't be denied. I think coming out of the bullpen in playoff games would take the pressure off and allow him to pitch well.

By the way, do you know if Flowers will be able to cut it defensively as a Catcher? So far I have heard mixed reviews.

"Dayan Viceido will not be moved to LF. If you have read anything about him they guy is going to have a body type that restricts his fielding abilities..."

I agree, he will not be long for any position except 1B or DH but if his bat is needed and Konerko is still on the team, he may have to spend a little time in left.... remember Carlos Lee? A 230 lb. 20 year old is different than a 230 lb 30 year old.

Hey Aaron, your roster only has 24 players.... how about Lillibridge as utility for SS and 2B?

Well if there is one thing i know, its that KW wasn't desperate to deal Swish and Javy. He obviously has a good feeling about the players he acquired or he would have just sucked it up and let Javy and Swish play for the Sox this season.

Sven,

Works for me. I wasn't counting when I made that roster, just thinking "ok, we'll need bench players for these positions". I would be torn between Lillibridge and Wise as the last player. Betemit is said to be capable at all infield positions. And with Wise's ability to hit in the clutch last year, he might be valuable as a pinch hitter. Lillibridge, however would give us some speed and a plan B if Getz falters. It's a tough call.

Nice analysis on Floyd. If you really watched him last yera, his Curve got a little better as the season goes on. I have faith that Walker will be able to help him stabilize it.

Later,
Aaron

Maybe not the best place for him he's definitely not ace material, but I this entire offseason I always thought Lowe (even though I think Atl overpaid) would be the perfect fit for the sox, a groundball pitcher that posted a nice stats last year would be the perfect pitcher at the cell.

Aaron I like ur line up, but here is my twist on it.

1. Lillibridge, I think he is a stud
2. Pierzynski , Flowers will replace him in a year or so
3. Quentin, him floyd and danks will get. Long term deals
4. Dye, last year I bet
5. Thome, ditto
6. Konerko, bounce back imminent
7. Ramirez, will be right up there with reyes and hanley as best ss in the league
8. Fields, viciedo will be our 1b and my comparison is miguel cabrera, call me crazy but trust me, he is special
9. Anderson, flawless defense and will step it up for us

Rotation:
1. Buerhle
2. Danks
3. Floyd
4. Colon, watch for marquez to step up if bartolo gets hurt
5. Safe bet- richard gut feeling- poreda, can u say future ace?

Pen:
Closer- jenks
Set up- linebrink
Russell
Richard/ poreda
Dotel
Carrasco
Thornton
7.

By the way, do you know if Flowers will be able to cut it defensively as a Catcher? So far I have heard mixed reviews.

Personally, I couldn't tell you because I've never even seen him play. He was just blocked by Mccann is the reason for which we traded him.

Miguel comparison was for viciedo, fields looks like a .265 36 95 guy, viciedo a .312 31 135 guy, so miguel with less hrs and higher average. Lillibridge, if given the full year, will bat .278 .352 obp 11 hr 56 RBI 35 sb 8 cs. He is my 2008 carlos quentin

IMO, we overpaid for Lowe, but we had too for two reasons:

1. We DESPERATELY needed an ace and couldn't afford to lose out on him

2. We gave him an ultimatum, if we offered him the 4/60, then he'd take it quick(who wouldn't?)

So Braves Fan, I'm curious, what's your take on Lillibridge? I know he didn't do too well in his limited time in the majors, but that doesn't say much. What kind of hitter is he? Does he have any patience? Potential top of the order guy? Inquiring minds want to know.

Later,
Aaron

I think we are WAYYYYYYY over rating Lillibridge here. He doesn't have any power and he has only played 29 games in the majors batting .200 in that span. He isn't going to be a factor this year IMO and has alot of room for improvement.

"fields looks like a .265 36 95 guy"

I have a better chance of winning the lottery then Fields has of hitting 36HR. Fields is a 20HR guy and has the potential to hit 30HR as he develops but to say he will put up stats like that next year is absurd.

I dunno man, 20 homers in 100 games his first year. Add in 50 games starting full time at the same clip and that's 30 HR. Fields certainly is capable of it. We'll see if it actually happens.

Later,
Aaron

Good point Aaron, I looked it up and in 100 games 2 years ago Fields hit 23 HR with 67 RBIs.

The question with Fields is his defense because he will never be asked to hit higher than 7th and is probably slotted for 8th..... I have a bad feeling that Sox fans are really going to miss Crede's glove this year. Hope I'm wrong and Fields does the job.

Aaron,

Lillibridge is a low 200's hitter may can hit ten homers and could steal 40-50 bases. He seems more patient than our starting SS. Lillibridge, like Flowers, was traded because he was blocked

I think Lillibridge is still a fine prospect. He could very easily steal 40-50 bases if he got his OBP up (which he probably will). He won't hit for high average or have much power, but he has a GREAT glove at SS.

As is Fields. Fields has a decent glove, as far as I've seen. He's going to be more of the three true outcome hitter, but I think he'll be solid. Although I do think that he's in Ozzie Guillen's doghouse, which is a bad place to be in terms of staying on the team.

Hey Melonis, I have a couple of defense questions for you.

- Will Flowers cut it as a catcher?

- Is Betemit an above average defensive 3B?

Thanks

Sven -

Flowers is a huge question mark, but I think he sticks at catcher at least for the first few years of his MLB career. I do think the Braves traded him at the perfect time (and for the perfect return/player). Ultimately, if I had to guess, I think that the shortage of catching prospects and the very low longetivity/high injury attrition of catchers prolongs his stint as catcher. He will be a poor defensive catcher, but I think he sticks. And if he remains on the Sox, you could see a battle at 1B between Brandon Allen and Dayan Viciedo. I think Viciedo is less likely to stick at 3B than Flowers is to stick at C.

I haven't seen enough of Betemit at 3B to say much about him. Looking at UZR/150 ratings though, he is below average at every position defensively. But then, small sample size probably plays a major part there. I would say that he is not better, and probably worse, than Josh Fields defensively at 3B. Juan Uribe is the best comparison. Betemit is a slightly inferior Juan Uribe.

Flowers isn't going to last long at Catcher. Long time ago, Konerko was a Catcher and now look at him, I see Flowers ending up the same way.

I thought Konerko started as a 3B a long, long time ago before we traded him.

*Traded for him.
