Padres Looking For Relievers

According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney the Padres are aggressively looking for relief help. They could fill as many as four bullpen spots with pitchers they pick up through trades or waivers.

As Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports, reliever Mark Worrell will miss the season with Tommy John surgery, so the Padres are working with one less reliever than expected. Hayes spoke with GM Kevin Towers and heard it's doubtful the Padres will sign a free agent reliever. Instead, Towers says he's "talking with GM's and finding out who's on the bubble to make clubs."

Earlier in the week Jayson Stark wrote that the Padres were in the mix for Will Ohman, but his asking price of $1.75MM could exceed the San Diego budget.

Massett from the Reds for some cash?

Rays are going to need to get rid of Lance Cormier, he only makes 650k, don't think they would want much/anything in return for him outside of the minor salary relief...

What about Byung-Hyun Kim?

I'm not sure why they sent Chad Reineke down, but he could be one for the Padres pen.

Mark Prior would make a nice set-up man if he can't start.

I've heard Buddy Carlyle is being shopped around by the Braves.

"I've heard Buddy Carlyle is being shopped around by the Braves."

Where have you heard that?

Anyway, Braves probably do have some excess relief pitching, but I have a feeling the bridge between Atlanta and S.D. has been pretty much burned.

1. In the article on braves.com that headlines where they released Phil Stockman, it's in there.

2. And yes it has been burned to the ground, damn you KT!!

Braves for NL East, thanks... technically it just says that teams have inquired about Buddy, but I guess that probably indicates that the Braves have put the word out that he can be discussed. I like Buddy... think he's better than Acosta, so hope nothing happens there.

I agree AtlantaMike, I hope they don't give away Carlyle because he's very reliable. As he showed last year, he can come in and do long relief or get one out. He like the rest of the bullpen should benefit from some durable starters.

A's have some reliever depth to offer

AAA reliever depth

schroder
cameron
carignan
bailey
lansford
gray

marshall
kilby
sisco

most of those guys dont have a spot due to ziegler/devine/blevins/springer/wuertz/casilla/out man or gio at the mlb level bullpen

dayn perry foxsports: Elsewhere, the defense is sound, and the bullpen may be the best in baseball.

due to this, there are guys that are stuck in a roster crunch, but are mlb ready and maybe expendable

i think gray or casilla could be had, both power stuff

The Blue Jays will have one (and possibly two) relievers to move at the end of ST. I would guess that between Frasor, Tallet and Camp, someone will go...make JP an offer KT

I doubt that KT is looking for a trade deal, sounds like he is waiting for guys to get cut as teams cut their rosters and then he'll go bargain shopping on the waiver wire. With Giles and Peavy still on the books he can't afford to sign anyone who would demand more than 1 million this season and I doubt he wants to give up prospects for a few borderline relievers. It's all because of this change from soft-tossing control guys to harder throwing strikeout pitchers, which is a good idea, just poorly timed since they can't afford to make big changes right now. Fortunately finding pitching gems out of nowhere is KT's speciality, so don't be surprised if he finds one or two guys outta maybe four or five who could be pitching in Petco for a few years to come (see Heath Bell, Cla Meredith). While those guys were acquired in trades, they were throw ins with more notable players involved, so KT could find similar guys without jobs as rosters start to shrink for the regular season.

SDPads4life,

I agree

"Massett from the Reds for some cash?"

This is what I was thinking, cash considerations and/or a PTBNL some low level prospect with mediocre upside. Might pitch well in Petco, was an average pitcher last season and still has upside.
