« Offseason In Review: New York Yankees | Main | Tigers Release Gary Sheffield »

Wily Mo Pena Released

According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, the Nationals released Wily Mo Pena today.  Pena refused his assignment to the minors after opposing teams chose not to claim him off waivers.  Now that the Nationals are on the hook for his $2MM salary, he might be able to find a job somewhere.

Pena, 27, came to the Nationals in August of 2007 from Boston for Chris Carter.  He had a nice initial stint with Washington, and signed a contract in December of that year.  But 2008 was a lost year due to shoulder problems.

Yay. One less outfielder.

I could see an NL East team, or maybe the Reds go after him.

This is going to make for a very interesting debate within front offices looking for a power hitting outfielder:

Wily Mo Pena or Gary Sheffield???

Feels like I say this to myself every season, but I don't think Pena should be given up on just yet. When he actually hits the ball, he can crush it. Unfortunately it seems that he just closes his eyes and swings for the fences. That, and he's goofy in the field. A small market AL team with a very good hitting coach could end up catching a good break with him, but that's a stretch.

There goes the Phillies right handed bat. I wouldn't mind the Mets giving him a look either, I always got the feeling this guys was going to click and become a monster. He is still pretty young. He still has never gotten a full season of at bats, either.

Good-bye, Wily Mo. You're a bum. Feel free to burden another team in the NL East. Bring Jim Bowden to that team's front office, as well.

What a wasted effort.

"This is going to make for a very interesting debate within front offices looking for a power hitting outfielder:

And they both have shoulder issues. The problem with Sheffield is that his once cannon-like throwing arm is gone due to his shoulder problems and I just don't see him as an effective fielder anymore. Pena is interesting, because he has shown the ability to play reasonably good defense in CF and absolutely murders the ball when he actually hits it. The problem is, as others have said, his discipline. Plate discipline has never been Sheffield's problem and if he is healthy, he can probably still go 20/20 with a .380+ OBP.

One outfielder gone.

How long till Kearns is off the roster?

Move him to texas, make him the next OF rejuvanted career project, it worked well for the last two guys why cant Willy Mo revive his career here? Other than our stacked outfield, loaded farm system, and better talent this makes perfect sense! On a serious note I hope the best for Willy I was always a fan of his watching him play for the Reds. I hope he finds a good fit for him and finds a way to fix whats wrong with his swing, was really an absolute stud in the minors, he has the power all his needs to work on is hitting for an average and walks, easier said than done yes, but possible.

There is a God.

And is Chris Carter news, the Sox gave him their final spot on the 25 man to back up first base and OF. He hasn't played a real game in 2009 and has already proven more valuable than Wily Mo.

The Pirates need to sign Wily Mo to platoon with Moss or Morgan. Take a one year flier on him, there's nothing to lose. He's always been an intriguing player to me.

"Wily Mo Pena or Gary Sheffield???"

WMP is the younger, still has power "potential," and is less likely to cause major problems. He'll get a job first. But the fact is he's been damaged goods for a long time. Reds fans have to be smiling right now...

Very happy about that, the man has a great bat.

I feel Willy Mo has always been capable of becoming a good player, but has just lacked the playing time to work out the kinks and become that player, whether it is because of injury or because he has been buried on the depth chart.

What people do not realize is he has never gotten a chance to develop. He was rushed to the majors when he was 21 and has stayed in the majors since. Basically what he needed was a couple full seasons under his belt, either at triple a or for an MLB team, but Cincy handled the situation horrible and left him on their bench as a part time player when he still had plenty to work on in his game. You can only get better with experience, and he has lacked that.

Hopefully a small market team can pick him up and give him a full season to see what he can do. He still has a ton of talent and could be a late blooming player.

Wily Mo Pena would benefit from a year of playing every day in Triple A.

Getting him regular playing time in the minors would likely be better for development than rotting on the bench as a part-time player. He could be the next Nelson Cruz type of story.

I think Wily Mo Pena would benefit of the pressure and spotlight off him and needs to finally learn how to recognize a slider. Since he's going to make $2m this season anyways, he might as well do what's best for his development and accept playing every day in Triple A.

The Padres should look into Pena. He will be cheap.

Well said yanks09. This guy still has monster power potential, he just has never gotten to play. He has had a few 200-300 at bat stretches where he shows some serious life in that bat, but then never gets to keep it going because of lack of PT. He definitely needs to go somewhere and get 500 at bats and there is still hope for him imo.

He's been given the chance to play and just can't stay healthy or prove himself. TNS is right; he needs to play AAA ball and work on fixing his problems. Unfortunately, Wily Mo thinks he's better than he actually is, and Jim Bowden was stupid enough to pay him like it.

Since 04, WMP has had stints where he posted OPS+ of 115, 105, 110, and 124, in stretches of 336, 311, 276, and 133 AB's. He has struggled at times in between these stretches, but again, he has never had a chance to get every day at bats. He is still relatively young (27), and he still has untapped potential. Some team should look to give him 500 AB's, and see what this guy really is.

I remember when everyone thought that Pena was going to be one of the next big sluggers in the game. Along with Joel Guzman..

Pena, like a lot of prospects, was totally misused and never developed properly because of it.

The guy obviously have monster upside, you don't hit 26 home runs when you're 22 years old by accident.

I agree with everyone who thinks that some time in AAA while he was younger and developing would have been huge for him. He was being shuffled around the outfield with Griffey, Dunn and Kearns while in Cincinnati, and so he was never able to develop the plate discipline and pitch recognition required of a top slugger.

He seems to go up to the plate swinging for the fences in every at bat, and it's left him striking out in a third of his plate appearances, and he ended up depending on home runs and a high BABIP to make him productive.

Some time in the minors refining his approach without the pressures of trying to get a job on the team while Griffey is hurt, or playing in Fenway, would've been huge.

Pena defintely needs a chance.

He's never even had 400AB's in a season, major or minors (or combined). He does strike out a lot, and really doesn't walk enough to make up for it. But the only way he is ever going to improve is to actually play.

Maybe he could end up in Florida. Although he would essentially be replacing the same player in Cody Ross, another high K, low BB, low OBP power hitter. Ross is probably a little better in the field, too. Too bad both bat right-handed...

its probably too late for wily mo to develop. i remember him from his cincinati days, and his weird contract that kept him out of the minors (was he a rule 5?). he was out of options or something and couldn't be sent to the minors without going on waivers so the reds had no choice but to let him set behind griffey/dunn/kearns. there was a point where he went on the "dl" for some minor injury that kept him on "rehab" for a month or so.

all that said, there was a poll in SI among MLBers asking who got the least out of the most talent... wily mo was at the top of that list.
