Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox aren't interested in bringing Orlando Cabrera back to Boston, though they did inquire about the shortstop. McAdam's sources say the Red Sox would have to give up too much "in terms of his remaining salary and prospects." Instead, they're content to play Nick Green and Julio Lugo until Jed Lowrie returns. One team apparently determined that Cabrera, a two-time Gold Glover, is the worst defensive shortstop in the American League.

If David Ortiz was still on steroids then this whole "we need a SS" scenario would be a very minor issue.
Also Youkilis is hurting.

If anything, Theo has beern making a few availability contacts as "due diligence, just in case" but nothing more. Lowrie will be his first choice, at short stop, if he is able to play, which he apparently will be very soon.
The suppositions about other shortstops are of the "trial balloon" variety created, most often, by sportswriters who have deadlines to fill..

What is the connection between Ortiz struggling and us needing a SS?

I don't disagree with playing Lugo and Green till the incumbent comes back. But if you think that the answer to the Red Sox SS position is Jed Lawrie you're too ugly for "mirror mirror on the wall". They should go get a real SS who can hit and field. Cabrera should be on no one's radar, but can play the position very well (he's just lost a step, that's all).

LOWRIE will be fine as long as the wrist is allright he will be back long enough for them to find out and still have time to make a move I wouldn't mind seeing JJ Hardy or Vizquel if Lowrie is a no go Either way greene stays and the Sox need to just eat the rest of the money they owe sLugo

I'm willing to take my chances with Lowrie. Last year he played with a bum wrist, was on fire in spring training, and then was injured again. I want to see him play an extended amount of time in the majors without any injuries before I dismiss him.

I'm curious to know why you think Lowrie isn't the answer.
Lowries Defense last year at SS played out to a 24.6 UZR/150. So needless to say he can be an above average defensive player.
The only knock on Lowrie right now can be his injury background. But WHEN HEALTHY has been great.

Yeah, if Oakland wanted the Red Sox to eat salary AND give up talent, then they might as well stick with Lugo and Green until Lowrie returns, because the upgrade really isn't that clear at this point to be worth giving up that much talent. And Cabrera's main asset, defense, hasn't looked too nice statistically this season.

O-Cab needs to have his agent call that team and have them adjust their ratings. I remember this O-Cab would have his agent call after games and argue to have plays he didn't make changed from errors on him to hits. Bet the pitchers were happy with that one.

I have a very hard time believing Cabrera is worse defensively than Betancourt. Per UZR, he (Cabrera) is showing as second-worst in the A.L. to date, but Betancourt would have to play like Ozzie Smith the rest of the year to get out of the hole he's in.
