« Red Sox Agree To Terms With Cuban SS | Main | Roy Halladay Rumors: Friday »
10:18am: Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News says the Reds are not trading for Rolen. The Blue Jays and Reds talked, but the Jays are not interested in Encarnacion and the Reds would have trouble taking on Rolen's contract.
McCoy spoke with a Reds official who says the team has no room for Garrett Atkins.
9:42am: The Reds are interested in hot-hitting third baseman Scott Rolen, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun. They've discussed him internally, scouted him and dangled Edwin Encarnacion to the Blue Jays. Elliott says J.P. Ricciardi would like prospects in return for Rolen, whose contract the Jays wouldn't mind shedding. Rolen's on a 25-game hit streak, with a .330 average and an .876 OPS, so the $16.5MM remaining on his deal before the end of next year is palatable, especially when you consider his strong defense.

Edwin did triple and homer last night. He was hurt all thru the start of the season before finally going on the DL and it appears hes finally healthy. I wouldnt include him in a deal for Rolen. Rolens not getting us to the playoffs this year. Id rather save the money and put it toward someone else

the Jays would be very wise to make that deal straight up asap

Rolen's a very good player, absolutely amazing on defense, I'm a little surprised Ben didn't mention that, but I guess it's common knowledge at this point. I think I might want something other than Encarnacion if I'm the Jays..

I think Rolen would make a major difference.
1. Rolen would be a massive improvement over EE or anyone else that has played 3B this year for the Reds defensively.
2. If Rolen is truly healthy he's comparable to EE offensively and likely far more consistent day to day.
3. Rolen would provide a veteran leadership that the current team is missing
4. EE requires far more hand holding then I feel he is worth. Tired of waiting on him to realize his talent.
I would definately deal EE for Rolen straight up and would kick in a second player if Toronto picked up some of the cash due to Rolen.

I would trade Rolen for Encarnacion in a heartbeat if I'm the jays...build for 2011, the young pitchers hopefully will be getting better and some healthier.

Shame the Jays incredible run ran out a couple weeks ago. Now all these people here are going to be trying to pick the bones (for nothing of course) and Jays fans like 92-93 and several others here that are the true base will just have to watch in amazement and disgust at the wild offers that have -0- chance of ever happening get posted..
Ryan is gone (thank goodness) hope that Jays can hang onto Halladay and just let the rotation get healthy for next year, then Snider will have a fresh start again. Jays showed early they can compete.
Trade of Rolen maybe, Jays can extort a huge bounty, but only him and reload for next year.

Rolen is a good player and does make some sense for The Reds. I dont know how expensive he is though. Maybe the Jays will offer to pick up some of the contract for more prospects.
I also like McDonald. That would solidify the left side of the infield.

How long are people going to keep pretending that Edwin Encarnacion is a 3B?
Posted by: MickS | July 10, 2009 at 10:07 AM
Good year or not, Rolen isn't going to get a huge bounty.
Encarnacion and a low-level prospect are how most offers are going to resemble

Would be a nice pickup for the Reds if they could swing it. Helps them this year and next, especially defensively. Jays are clearly in sell mode so might as well get what you can. Alot will depend on what/if the jays pick up some salary. If the Jays dont pick up salary, Encarnacion straight up seems like a fair exchange.

The Marlins may make sense here. They need a sure handed, hot hitting veteran at 3B. And they have the prospects to make the deal.
This would put Bonafacio on the bench where he belongs as a utility player and pinch runner.

"This would put Bonafacio on the bench where he belongs as a utility player and pinch runner."
I agree. Bonafacio has been an absolute disaster as a 3B for the Fish. His glove, bat (singles only from a power position) and speed that is good for running the bases, yet slow take offs for stealing bases makes him a real liability on this Fish team, unfortunately the Fish have Amezaga, one of the (usually) better utility players around as a utility guy, which makes Bonafacio pretty much 100% useless for the Fish period.

Rolen would be a nice pickup by Jocketty, but he's going to have to be creative with the contract and not give away the store in terms of prospect(s. EE plus a young pitcher and salary help from the Jays should be enough.
Posted by: Redbird | July 10, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Any Rolen deal for the Jays should be about unloading the $16.5 mil remaining on his contract, not getting to greedy about the talent they would receive. If they could get Encarnacion as a stop-gap 3b and a AAA pitcher, be happy.
Also, Cito Gaston is an excellent, excellent hitting instructor and he might be able to fix EE's inconsistent bat.

How could the Marlins take on that salary?? Bonafacio should be on the bench even if they dont get anyone else.

Fish do take on salary when they havae a chance like thisy year and always have in the past, they just always dump it after the season is over, regardless of whether they win or not.
I am one of the few people here that probably watch them continually and trust me.. They can smell that NL East and will take on salary this year and after this season, will dump it, along with Uggla and probably Cantu as well, they just have no fan base.

EE straight up for Rolen sounds about right. If the Reds are taking on that kind of salary there is no reason to give up prospects too.

Isn't going to happen. Fish also need a 3B and have tons of young pitching, like Vandenhurk that is MLB ready, just waiting for the call.

Sorry for the Triple post not sure what happened.
Never will understand the love for Type Pad

i'd love to see the marlins take rolen, and give the jays some good pieces
Posted by: pastlives | July 10, 2009 at 11:35 AM
The Fish are not going to want to take on Rolen's salary and the Blue Jays aren't going to want to pay him to play elsewhere.

Three way here. Rolen to Cards
Ankiel to White Sox Fields to Jays
Posted by: rockford | July 10, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Thanks for the shoutout, johns.
It's funny that the team Rolen makes the most sense for right now is the Cardinals. Too bad you burned that bridge La Russa.
I'd be surprised if Rolen got traded before a Halladay trade, because right now the Jays have a very strong team in 2010, and there's no sense in only breaking a part of it up.

The Reds' season is over. Votto's month-long sabbatical essentially killed their season. They were 26-20 when Votto went on the DL for stress and now they are 41-43 and going nowhere fast. Thanks Joey!

We are approaching halfway through the season and near .500 - I'd say that's pretty good for a team that finished as badly as they did last year.
Blaming the Reds losing on Votto is not even worth arguing. Is it Votto's fault the team averages 3 runs per game? Is it Votto's fault Jay Bruce is batting .200? Is it Votto's fault that the team's BA with RISP is about .200? No...none of the above.
This is a team, not a one man wrecking crew. Even Albert Pujols couldn't make this team better than what it is. It's a team effort. Everyone needs to get their butts in gear and have a better second half.

Rob Dicken,
I do see some players doing quite well or at least better than I expected.
Dickerson
Phillips
Votto
Hanagan.
Hernandez has done a decent job too.
Seriously Dusty needs to play these four guys more often. I say split the time with Hernandez and Hanigan maybe 60 percent Hernandez and 40 percent Hanigan. I could see a few more wins happening just from that adjustment alone.
Tavarez had a huge hole in the lineup for a while but seems to have been better the last week or so.
Something needs to be done with Bruce the guy has great power but geez he hits for around .200 average no good. I mean if he was walking more I would feel a little better but no.
Third Base is a gaping hole. The Rolen thing would be great. I too am tired of waiting for EE to figure out consistent hitting and all his throwing errors.
Make it happen Jockety.
