Aroldis Chapman Review

With all the information swirling around about free agent lefty Aroldis Chapman, I thought a summary would be helpful.  Chapman has been declared a free agent and can sign at any time, though a deal is unlikely before the conclusion of the World Series.  One GM told Yahoo's Tim Brown in July, "I'm sure all 30 teams will be interested to some degree."  Nonetheless, let's look at specific suitors.

  • Red Sox:  They've been a top suitor from the start.  Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus says Chapman was scheduled to throw a bullpen at Fenway today but it was cancelled due to inclement weatherESPN's Peter Gammons believes Boston's signing of former Chapman teammate Jose Iglesias may impact the pitcher's decision.
  • Yankees: They've also been a top suitor from the start.  ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. said Chapman met with GM Brian Cashman and other Yanks officials at the October 25th playoff game and "had good conversations."  Several reporters see Chapman as another Yankees-Red Sox battle.
  • Mariners: Add them to the list - our source says they'd like to meet with Chapman in the next week.
  • Cardinals: A scheduled October 26th meeting was cancelled due to the Tony La Russa announcement.  The meeting is expected to be rescheduled.
  • Orioles: They've maintained interest and are pushing for a meeting soon.  In September, president Andy MacPhail admitted interest to MASN's Roch Kubatko, but added, "If some of the big boys are going to go after him, like the Red Sox did with Dice-K, that's not a risk that I would be willing to take."
  • Mets: They met with Chapman on October 23rd.  The New York Post's Bart Hubbuch said the Mets were out after being told Chapman wants up to $60MM to sign.  I'm not so sure the Mets and Chapman actually discussed dollar figures.
  • Tigers: They've confirmed interest.
  • Angels:  Scouting director Eddie Bane admitted interest in July, but noted that Chapman's breaking pitches are not yet effective in talking to Mark Saxon of the OC Register.  Bane more recently told Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times that he'd need to see Chapman throw against live hitters before investing.  Chapman has mentioned L.A. as a place he'd like to visit.
  • White Sox:  Our source said they've expressed interest.
  • Cubs: Our source said they've expressed interest.
  • Athletics:  Named by Arangure Jr. as one of the teams "paying varying degrees of attention to Chapman."  Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle confirmed Oakland's interest but says they haven't met with him.
  • Giants:  Named by Arangure Jr. as one of the teams "paying varying degrees of attention to Chapman."
  • Dodgers: They aren't likely to be serious suitors, according to one of Arangure Jr.'s sources.
  • Blue Jays:  We named the Jays as an interested club, but GM Alex Anthopoulos told reporters that signing Chapman is "not realistic."
  • Astros: Owner Drayton McLane seemingly considers Chapman too pricey, based on his comments to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle.

Who are we kidding? The Yankees or the Red Sox will sign him because MLB is not fair and the richest teams get the best players.

PS - In related news, Bud Selig just signed a contract extension with Lucifer.

Realistically, I think that this ends up becoming a Yankees-Red Sox bidding war.

Other high-revenue teams like the Mets, Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Angels, Dodgers and Phillies don't really have the excessive resources or the need for a player like Chapman, who still is a pretty good amount of projection, and other teams, like the Cards, Mariners, Giants and Athletics, certainly have the money, but it just doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money on a prospect when resources are limited.

If he ends up anywhere other than New York or Boston, I'll be surprised.

I expect the Red Sox to wind up getting him. He could end up being insurance in a year or two if they end up letting Beckett walk or if they trade someone like Buchholtz for a young hitter.

My prediction:

1. Every Yankee poster will claim that his team has the inside track.

2. Every Red Sox post will claim that his team has the inside track.

3. Every other poster will complain that the whole thing is rigged and unfair (which it is).

@bjsguess

Seems like a fair prediction to me.

" Every other poster will complain that the whole thing is rigged and unfair (which it is)."

What's unfair, the fact your respective team will ultimately choose not to pursue a free agent they could sign if they really wanted to?

I agree teams like the marlins and pirates won't be able to land Chapman, but if you're spending 90+ mil a year in payroll, I think it's clear you have the capital to sign the guy if you decide it's worth it.

Not sure how whining helps.

Here is an interesting question that I would like to see someone write about: How much better is Chapman going to be in the short-term than Strasburg? Is he really worth possibly four times as much? From everything I read, it has become pretty obvious that Strasburg should be in line for a spot in the regular season rotation, some saying that he should be the #1 starter on a rather weak Nationals team. That means better than John Lannan, who by all means isn't the great pitcher, but does consistently give his team a chance to win. So if Strasburg is going to come in and potentially be better than that, how good is Chapman supposed to be to warrant that type of a contract?

Strasburg was not a free agent so it's not a valid comparison.

"Strasburg was not a free agent so it's not a valid comparison."

Right.

Strasburg SHOULD be a valid comparison, but MLB has a draft system in place that forces Strasburg to be a part of it, and within that system, he has substantially less leverage.

The idea is that Boras can now go around and say, "Look, my guy got $15M through the draft compared to the $40M that Chapman got on the open market, despite the fact that Strasburg is regarded as the better, more polished prospect. How freaking ludicrous is that?"

And honestly, Boras has a pretty good point, the current system used to place amateur players into MLB organizations is a joke.

Jose Iglesias will get his friend over to Boston.

As a Mets fan, I'd like Chapman on my team, but we have way too many question marks with an upside.

Question- The Dodgers were supposedily(sp?) ruled out of these sweepstakes a few weeks ago. However, that was when we were more focused on Kikuchi. Now that he is staying in Japan, it would seem that they would at least jump in and see what happens. I know no one has reported it, but to me, that doesnt mean much. The Dodgers and Colletti in general like to do business behind the scenes(ie, his extension, Cliff Lee rumors, etc)

Could every team "afford" Chapman? Sure. Is it a good use of resources to invest $40m in a guy that most people haven't even see pitch yet? Hardly.

Big payroll teams can afford the risk. To pretend that everyone is playing on the same economic footing is just absurd. Teams ARE NOT worth equal value. They do not generate equal revenues. Their operating budgets are different.

The fact is that you can have a totally pathetic team in NY (think the Mets of 2009) and a very competitive team in Miami. Yet, the revenues and profit will be nowhere close. The Mets, despite their ineptitude (and injuries) are in such a better position to take a risk than the Marlins. And it's not just one year. We would repeat this over and over again and the same would still be true. NY, LA, Boston, Chicago all own serious economic advantages over the other markets.

BTW - my team is a big market player. They have somewhat unlimited resources. That doesn't mean though that I think the system is remotely fair or equitable. I recognize that my Angels and the A's are not playing by the same rules. That's why I have tremendous respect for the A's organization and leadership. They may not get the final results that the Angels do (at least over the past 7-8 years) but they are generally very efficient in playing the cards they are dealt.

Yeah, this is a pretty good way to look at it.

For the Yankees, Chapman busting would merely be a disappointment, like Pavano or Igawa.

For a team like the Athletics, Chapman busting would be a major failure in the front office and have repercussions in the team's financial flexibility for years.

I get that only the big market teams are in on Chapman, but I don't get why you all think the Red Sox and Yankees are the only ones that are able to get it done. IF the Phillies, Mets, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers, Tigers, White Sox, or Angels thought that this guy was a special pitcher they could all get him. I think you all forget that the Red Sox had the 6th highest payroll this year, you all act like they are the Yankees, which isn't true. They have an advantage over the Marlins and Rays of the world, but they are on the same playing field as the Detroit's, Chicago's, and LA's of the MLB.

I don't think that just because Boston and the NYY are the 2 teams that would be the most probable to bid the most that they would bid the price up the most at all.

The NYY spend crazy each and every year for fringe players and have done it for decades, it does not matter to them in the least if they are busts and move on, as long as a Steinbrenner is there to keep shoveling bullion into the fire to keep it stoked, they could care less as long as one of them pays off now and then, where in Boston they do not like to take chances on huge gambles with iffy chances.

If this gets into a bidding war at 25M plus, the NYY are going to be the highest bidder, Boston's chances of being chosen are with the minor league development, medical staff that they have and not being rushed like a piece of hamburger through the system.

your training staff let Beckett keep pitching through back pain and their 'training' led to DiceK being out all year. I wouldnt advertise that much

That's not unfair, that's Baseball!

I have to wonder if a guy who throws 100 mph can really be a starter in MLB. Generally,(I know, there's always an exception) when a player throws that kind of heat he ends up in the bullpen where he can maximize his velocity. That being said, can you imagine if the Redsox do pick him up! Bard and Chapman, a young Righty-Lefty combo out of the bullpen that can both throw 100+ mph. That would be incredible!! Papelbon would almost definitely be gone in 2011. Im all for the Redsox signing as many quality arms as they can.

"your training staff let Beckett keep pitching through back pain and their 'training' led to DiceK being out all year."

This comment was obviously posted by someone who doesnt follow the Redsox. Dice-K had a bad year because he showed up in the spring fat and out of shape. I do think that the difference in training between MLB and Japan may have played a minor role in his lack of production only because Dice didnt give it an honest try. When he did finally get into shape, he had a couple of quality outings for the Sox. I hope he saw his hard work pay off and continues on the path the Sox have laidout for him. As far as Beckett goes, the training staff can only go by what the player tells them. If your staff ace says he's good to go you have to have confidence and believe in him. Obviously it didnt work out that way and Beckett has noone to blame but himself. Being his contract year, expect him to come out of the gate strong next season.

That same medical staff also knew what was wrong with Beckett's persistent blister issue he had with the Marlins several times each year and he has not had -1- such problem with the Red Sox, not to mention diagnosing properly medical issues other teams have missed entirely, such as Brad Penny by the LAD being a bad one that cones to mind..

johns, we told Pwnny what was wring, he was just too lazy to correctly rehab it

ok, no more posts at 6am...

"That same medical staff also knew what was wrong with Beckett's persistent blister issue he had with the Marlins several times each year and he has not had -1- such problem with the Red Sox"

That is simply not true -- Beckett was DL'ed with a blister problem in 07 and has been hurt several times throughout his Red Sox tenure. You could argue this was his healthiest season on the Red Sox.

I don't think anyone on the Red Sox wants to take credit for anything Brad Penny's done. He was just as terrible on the Red Sox as he was on the Dodgers. Though for John Smoltz's resurgence I think Duncan and LaRussa and the Cardinals would gladly take the credit. What happened there, Johns?

The Red Sox aren't miracle workers. Players are still going to get hurt because of the effort that they put into playing. The Red Sox have done wonders for developing young power pitchers such as Lester, Bucholz, Bard and Masterson. Blaming the Red Sox for Matsuzaka is easily one of the most uninformed comments that I have ever read, Matsuzaka had adamantly refused to get into the Red Sox throwing program and came into the season unhealthy. There was even a brief media battle between the two sides and Matsuzaka agreed to rehab during the season on the Red Sox program and came back at the end of the season to pitch spectacularly. I expect he will be back to his 2008 form in 2010, without the walk issues to battle through.

"Though for John Smoltz's resurgence I think Duncan and LaRussa and the Cardinals would gladly take the credit. What happened there, Johns? "

What resurgence are you referring to? A 1 - 3 record and a 4.26 ERA? I'd call that pitching against easier competition.

What Cuban defects in the Netherlands? Why was the passport Chapman had not picked up (like every other time after airport check ins with Cuban players). Perhaps the Red Sox were (with help from Iglesius) able to help Chapman escape and are all along the team that he will choose.

i say cap signing bonuses. kinda defeats the purpose of giving a last place team a number one pic if they cant sign the picks.

oh and make international players enter the draft. maybe a supplemental draft.

"What resurgence are you referring to? A 1 - 3 record and a 4.26 ERA? I'd call that pitching against easier competition."

Really? You think a 4 run decrease in ERA is solely due to a move to the National League? Believe that, then. Take away his last start at the Reds -- a disaster -- his NL ERA sits under 3. That's how small a sample size we're dealing with. So small it's hard to tell anything -- except there was more in the tank than the Red Sox suspected.

Also notice I said nothing about Matsuzaka in my first post -- I just noticed some revisionist history regarding Beckett I felt should be corrected. I'll say this about Matsuzaka -- he pitched way above his skills in 08 and was heading for a fall no matter what. If he hadn't been legitimately injured he would've been DL'ed with social anxiety disorder by July.

Though I agree the Red Sox have done an admirable job developing those arms in their farm system I'd also point out that for all the hype, only one of those guys is a reliable, front of the line starter.

Yankees, Shmankees...and Boston, Shmoston...why does everyone always count out the Angels? They're a huge market team...they just don't throw money at everyone, they don't buy quick fixes. They're responsible with their money, and do an awesome job at developing their lowe levels. If the Angels really want someone, they could get them. They're contenders year in and year out(since the hiring of Sciocia) without the big names.
