Odds & Ends: Cards, Red Sox, Jenks

After a great ending to the NLDS in Colorado, we'll be without baseball for a couple days. But not to worry, the links are still coming. Here's another set....

  • In their ESPN wrap-up of the St. Louis Cardinals' season, the Baseball Prospectus staff speculates that if Dave Duncan leaves town, his reclamation projects like Joel Pineiro might follow to wherever he lands.
  • The BP staff also takes a look at the Boston Red Sox for ESPN, pointing out that it'll be difficult to upgrade the offense in 2010, with the contracts of Mike Lowell and David Ortiz still on the books. Olney suggests that Miguel Tejada could provide solid production for the Sox if Theo Epstein could convince the infielder to sign at a discount for a chance to "win now."
  • MLB.com's Scott Merkin writes that, while Bobby Jenks wants to stay in Chicago for 2010 and beyond, the closer isn't happy about the team's comments about his conditioning.
  • Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News expects Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean to sign new contracts that will keep them in San Francisco -- "probably within the next couple days."
  • The most important "free agents" for the New York Mets to target aren't actually players, according to Ben Shpigel of The New York Times. He wants the team to pursue managerial and front office options like Tony LaRussa and Kevin Towers, but is worried that none will still be available by the time the Mets give up on Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya.
  • Seeing Wilson Betemit mentioned as a minor league free agent prompted Tyler Hissey of Around the Majors to revisit last November's Nick Swisher deal that sent Betemit to Chicago.
  • U.S.S. Mariner's Dave Cameron provides an interesting read about putting together a major-league roster.

Why is it that Buster Olney always says exactly what I say 2 days after I say it?

I bet Pineiro goes where the money is (and where the years are) rather than where, if anywhere, Duncan goes. Other teams have pitching coaches, too.

Don't get too cocky MLB. Olney, Heyman, Rosenthal, etc. They're all pretty slow.

"Why is it that Buster Olney always says exactly what I say 2 days after I say it?"

He doesn't.

It's a shame Warthen is still on the Mets. Maybe Duncan could help Pelfrey with his control, though that may be more of a mental issue.

God, Olney is so dumb. Tejada is terrible.

Thats a pretty ill informed and dumb thing to say zsberenyi. Do an iota of research before shooting your mouth off
Miggy rocked a .313/.340/.455 with 14hr and 46 doubles. Considering the crap the Red Sox started at SS this year, Tejada would be a huge upgrade.

Swisher was their best trade in the last few years.

"I've done everything I can do, I've done everything that is physically possible, to make myself in better shape this year," said Jenks. "Where the years previously I didn't lose weight in-season, I didn't want my weight issue to be a factor as to why I had an off season."

Bobby Jenks, you're a liar. You weigh 275 pounds. You could stand to lose a few pounds. Don't take it personally, just hit the gym and everyone wins.

Jenks needs to take a look in the mirror. His chunky ass needs to hit the weights. I doubt that's muscle mass.

Swisher was their best trade in the last few years.

The Lee, V-Mart, and Santana trades were all better.

It's informed by the fact that he's a disaster at shortstop at this point and he had a whopping 2.9% walk percentage, which means when his batting average drops down to .260 next year, his OPS will take a huge hit. Oh and he's like 43.

"The Lee, V-Mart, and Santana trades were all better."

The Santana trade was probably better, right up until Minaya signed him to that contract. You can't give Minaya that much credit when you still owe Santana 4/93.5 plus a $5.5M buyout attached to a $25M option for 2014. That's a ton of money.

It would help a lot if he could develop some legitimate offspeed stuff as well, because right now he's all fastballs, pretty much. He can still be fairly good doing that, but when his velocity or command goes, then he's going to have some trouble.
