Happy birthday to Hall-of-Famer Whitey Ford and (future Hall-of-Famer?) Zack Greinke. MLBTR's gift to these two star pitchers is this batch of news items...
- John Hickey of the Seattle PostGlobe outlines some of the holes that the Mariners have to fill for 2010, and speculates that free agent and Los Angeles resident Adrian Beltre might be targeted by the Angels and Dodgers.
- Peter Gammons thinks that if it weren't for Manny Ramirez's player option, the Dodgers would part ways with the controversial left fielder, reports WEEI's Alex Speier.
- MLB.com's Steve Gilbert writes that if Conor Jackson can stay healthy in the Dominican Winter League, he can avoid being non-tendered by the Diamondbacks.
- Joe Mauer's big brother Jake has been named the new manager of the Twins' Class A-Advanced affiliate in Fort Myers, reports Benjamin Hill of MLB.com.
- Nationals principal owner Mark Lerner discussed Jim Riggleman's chances of being named manager, some recent front office hires and his club's overall plans for the future in a chat with Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
Could that possibly be a ploy to keep Mauer in Minnesota beyond 2010?

No where, seemed like a pretty dumb suggestion.

You guys would serioiusly rather have Blake at 3B than Beltre???

Beltre to the cardinals, make more sense than the dodgers getting beltre.

dj, the only way he plays 3rd is if Blake goes to 1b or LF. LF will have Manny next yr(theres no way he doesnt exercise his option). 1B has Loney, who looked great in the postseason for a 2nd straight yr and I doubt he gets traded. There is no way Blake is already benched, its the end of the 1st year and he was great during the regular yr and his postseason struggles has something to do w/ his hammy issues, which will heal w/ rest during the offseason. There is almost no place for Beltre, espically for multiple yrs

Besides that, Beltre is still the most frustrating Dodger of the last 30 years (Steve Sax).

Now, why would the Angels or Dodgers target Beltre?
Dodgers have Blake and Dewitt at 3B.
Angels really, really need to get some playing time in for Brandon Wood, and have others who can play 2B/SS. Unless one of Wood or Aybar is in a deal for pitching, I don't see a fit there at all.

"Besides that, Beltre is still the most frustrating Dodger of the last 30 years (Steve Sax)."
I'd have to go with Raul Mondesi.
Anyway, you have to laugh when you hear someone say the Dodgers might be interested in Beltre. How in the world is this a fit?

Well, lakersdodgersblue, Manny's Hammy's were a favorite topic in Beantown for a couple of years prior to his move to LA, especiallyl when he didn't feel like playing or running out a ground ball or pop-up. "the more things change, the more la meme chose"
