« Marlins Notes: De Aza Claimed, St. Claire Could Return | Main | Odds & Ends: Yankees, Cardinals, Astros »
3:46pm: MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports the Rangers have also taken catcher Kevin Richardson off the 40-man roster, and are trying to sign him to a minor-league contract.
2:39pm: Per Jason Grilli's Twitter page, the Texas Rangers have removed the 32-year-old pitcher from their roster.
Grilli wrote, "My day just got more interesting-as said earlier tweet-A leader can't lead until he knows where he is going-Texas took me off the roster".
Grilli is an interesting buy-low candidate for a number of teams. While his ERA jumped from 3.00 in 2008 to 5.32 in 2009, that is highly deceiving. He posted a Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) ERA of just 3.93 in 2009, and has been under 4 each of the past three seasons.
Grilli has also been roughly as effective against lefties and righties throughout his career, allowing a .271 batting average to righties, .265 to lefties.
If Grilli is to be believed, he'll be in terrific shape for someone in 2010. He wrote on a follow-up tweet, "Gonna be some Rocky Balboa training commence".

Brewers should sign him immediately.

Seems like a Marlins or Rays candidate...

Nats buy low on everyone, saves Rizzo going to NY to get shot down on Chapman.

that FIP is no joke, ERA relies too much on defense, we need to move over to FIP to really gague how good a pitcher is. any team that gets this guy is most likely going to get a great arm in the pen. he's got craig breslow 2.0 written all over him.

I'll say Brewers will sign him.

I agree with Morneau...I see him on the Rays.

We need to have an intervention on his illiteracy.

Interesting move by the Rangers. I'm curious, Grilli was pretty effective for the most part here, had a few bad games but overall was pretty decent. JD must have something up his sleeve with one of the young guys, maybe he has his eye on somebody that's going to be available, or maybe he realizes that we have about 8 starters that are at least decent MLB pitchers and they're not all going to be able to fit in the rotation. Good luck to Grilli wherever he goes, but I'm interested to see how the Rangers are going to replace him.

Actually, his FIP's have kind of been a joke.
People tend to forget that even FIP is affected by luck (such as HR/FB ratio), park and league factors.
Grilli is a guy who's really benefited from this, in terms of FIP:
2009 TEX: 3.84 FIP, 4.70 xFIP
2009 COL: 3.93 FIP, 4.57 xFIP
2008 COL: 2.76 FIP, 3.92 xFIP
2007 DET: 4.00 FIP, 4.83 xFIP
2006 DET: 4.83 FIP, 5.54 xFIP
I don't know about you, but I definitely don't see a "great arm" in that track record, just a solid, at best, one.

It seems that almost everytime a journeyman type ballplayer gets released, a Met fan or two always suggests that the ball player should or will wind up with the Mets.
Why should the Mets be a destination for every free agent journeyman? Just curious!

Mets need a bullpen arm that can get both righties and lefties out. Should come for < 1 mil. xFIP does seem to warn against it.

He's around 40% with his fly balls so Citi Field may be a nice home for him.

He's also the kind of guy the Braves would take a flyer on.

Normally I'd agree, but the Braves have several left-handed options for their bullpen in O'Flaherty, Logan, and Gomez. Between the three of them I think the LOOGY/LH-MR job is pretty much locked up. What the Braves should be looking at is young, cheap back-end arms and buy-low options.

He wont be a met. A brewer most likely. An affordable veteran for the crew.
