« Diamondbacks Will Consider Multi-Year Pitching Options | Main | Rosenthal And Morosi On Yankees, Vizquel, Bradley »
The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates are among the teams interested in Japanese reliever Ryota Igarashi, according to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker.
Giants GM Brian Sabean says that while Igarashi isn't their main priority, he's someone they're "looking into." Meanwhile, Pittsburgh GM Neil Huntington says that acquiring Akinori Iwamura was a factor in their interest in Igarashi: "In acquiring Iwamura, we opened the door to getting Japanese players. We gave up a middle reliever to get Iwamura, so he [Igarashi] is a player we have interest in."
Igarashi is represented by Arn Tellem and the Wasserman Media Group, which Tim profiled earlier today.

Somewhat off-topic, but not so much - if I were a Pirates fan, I think I'd feel pretty comfortable with my GM right about now. Neal Huntington seems like a rather sharp guy.

What does he sport besides that high 90s fastball?

A quick scouting report brings up that he has well above average splitter. So that's the combo pitch to go with the fastball.
He also has an average slider and a meh curve. He sounds like he doesn't have much control.

giants just need to worry about there offense. we can find relievers without overpaying for a Japanese player. sabean just find a way to score more than 3 runs a game.

Japanese flamethrower or not, with the giants just a couple of pieces away from a playoff team, I sense a busy offseason ahead!

Hope the Pirates get him, their fans need to feel good again.
Clemente, Stargell, Al Oliver. Man they had some good players. Hope this GM gets it going.

Yeah the Giants have a solid bullpen already. I wouldn't break the bank on this guy.

Subtracting Howry and Merkin then adding Runzler and Joaquin was all the Giants pen needed...
Miller
Martinez
Medders
Romo
Runzler
Affeldt (SU)
Wilson (CL)

I like that bullpen 55.
I fully expect the Giants to get either Igarashi or Calero and replace Martinez.
You said adding Runzler and Joaquin was all the club needed(True).
But then you didn't put Joaquin in your version of the pen! Take out Martinez and put in Joaquin and it looks REAL nice to me.
Giants in 2010 playoffs...or Sabean and Bochy are gone. Kim Ng in.

If I were a Pirates fan I would be irate. 19 straight losing seasons?
How do they draw any fans?
How come Pud Selig is still Commish?

If I was a Royals fan, I would wish that I was a Pirates fan. At least their GM knows that their doing.
Dayton Moore preaches OBP, yet signs low-OBP guys. The Pirates are doing their rebuilding right. Unlike the Royals, who would rather dole out cash to veterans to wallow in mediocrity.
I like what Huntington is doing in Pittsburgh. Now, I only hope that Nutting is willing to compete even better in a couple years time by actually spending instead of trading away young players because of salary (ie. The Marlins)

A guy that throws gas and doesn't have the best control in the world? He fits NH's style to a T.
"If I were a Pirates fan I would be irate. 19 straight losing seasons? "
It's 17 and NH isn't responsible for 15 of them, while he's finally starting to get out from under the mess that was left by Bonifay/Littlefield. Stop grouping those failures in with what NH is trying to do and bring an actual point to a discussion rather than saying the same old tired crap about the Bucs. We know they suck.

I completely agree with you. As another Bucco Followers, I trust NH ... just like I trust Ray Shero or Dan Rooney!
