« Red Sox Acquire Jeremy Hermida | Main | Colorado Re-Signs Matt Belisle, Randy Flores »

Odds & Ends: Crosby, Gonzalez, Mariners

More items from a busy opening day of baseball's hot stove season...

  • Consider it a formality, but John Lackey, Matt Holliday, and Jason Bay were among the 79 players filing for free agency today according to MLB.com's Tom Singer.
  • Free agent Bobby Crosby told MLB.com's Mychael Urban that he doesn't expect to be back in Oakland next season.
  • Alex Gonzalez has yet to hear from the Red Sox in regards to whether or not they will exercise his $6MM option for next season, says The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman.
  • Jim Street of MLB.com breaks down Seattle's free agents, noting that Russell Branyan and Ken Griffey Jr. "are the most likely to return," and that if Griffey comes back, it would likely mean that the Mariners wouldn't re-sign veteran Mike Sweeney.  Street also reported that right-hander Miguel Batista feels he won't be back in Seattle next season, with Batista going so far as to say there is a "99.9 percent chance" he will be in another team's uniform in 2010.
  • Texas introduced former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle as their new hitting coach on Thursday.
  • John Harper of the New York Daily News feels that Hideki Matsui's World Series MVP award made the Yankees' decision whether or not to re-sign the free agent slugger much more difficult.  Even before Matsui's huge Game Six performance, MLBTR's Luke Adams outlined the factors behind any decision to put Matsui back in pinstripes in 2010.
  • Randy St. Claire has been hired as the Marlins' new pitching coach, reports Barry Jackson and Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

Bobby Crosby's story depresses me. A solid first year and then....pure trash afterwards. Will anybody pick him up? Probably not.

Try being an A's fan!

And he was good for 1.5 years then he became the worst hitter ever, I assume he's on KC's radar.

I live in Oakland, transplanted from NYC. I moved to Oakland a couple of years before his rookie season. I've watched closely with the hope that he'd blossom.

Batista can go ahead and count on that other 0.1 percent too...lol

Totally off topic, but........

......in other news, Prince Fielder likes to eat.

Psh, whatever.

Make pot legal.

I'm not even sure Crosby will get a contract next year. Obviously I'm overexagerating a bit, but really, does any team have any interest? Reds possibly?

I don't get to see a lot of Crosby, how is he in the field? I know he is a natural SS and has played 2b and 3rd could he be a decent utility guy for the Phillies?

He sucks at everything. Everything seems like a struggle for him. He'll get a job. It's not often someone is totally booted out of the MLB without having a scandal follow them. I could see him ending up in the PCL, though.

I hope Griffey comes back.

• Miguel Batista …
pull out the cliche on this – you can give 110 per cent

• Bobby Crosby is no Bing (or Field) but there's enough talent that if somebody can tap it, you could a couple of Ryan Freel, Willie Bloomquist type years

Bobby Crosby doesn't expect to back in 2010? I wonder what gave that away? Maybe the fact that the A's preferred an untried Cliff Pennington and his underwhelming minor league numbers. Maybe it is the fact that Pennington put up an OPS over 100 points higher than Crosby this season. Maybe it is the fact that Crosby has put up a .231/.292/.346 line over the past four seasons in over 1600 plate appearances (and the A's paid him $12m for the privilege). Maybe it is because Crosby whined like a bitch when Pennington was brought up to replace Cabrera. Maybe it was because Crosby's dad whined like a bitch when Bobby was placed on the disabled list. Bobby Crosby wants to play SS for someone next year? He will be lucky to play SS in AAA, let alone in the majors.

St. Claire has been our pitching coach for over a week. This is pretty old news.

Who are we kidding? The Yankees will sign Matsui and Damon both. It's not like they don't have the money.

PS - Enough with the 10 paragraph blogs! You don't get paid to be an analyst for a reason!
