Royals Claim Gaby Hernandez

By Tim Dierkes | March 3, 2010 at 2:59pm CDT

Pitcher Gaby Hernandez continues to bounce around, as the Royals claimed him off waivers from the Red Sox today according to a team press release.  The Mariners designated Hernandez for assignment upon signing Ryan Garko.  The Red Sox claimed Hernandez, but then designated him upon claiming Casey Fien.

Hernandez, 24 in May, posted a 5.23 ERA, 6.0 K/9, and 3.0 BB/9 in 146.3 Triple A innings last year.  Heading into the '09 season, Baseball America wrote that Hernandez "flashes three average or better pitches, but he often tries to be so fine that his stuff plays down."  At the time, BA suggested he could still become a No. 4 or No. 5 starter.

this is precisely the kind of claim that the Royals need to be making. Hopefully DMGM learned his lesson with Sidney Ponson last year. Then again, it is only March 3. Next, I’d just cut bait on Guillen, and open up a spot for Kila on the roster. Let he, Callaspo and Fields get bat time at DH and consider it a lesson learned.

I just don’t see Dayton thinking that clearly.

Good move by the Royals. Semi-reclamation project with a chance to help the big club someday.

Cut bait on Guillen? Not likely. Not only that for your to suggest that Kila would be better than Guillen is laughable. There’s a reason Kila is in AAA – he’s not that good. He got hot one year in the minors and Royals fans seem to think he’s the solution to all our problems. He’s not. He’s not even a piece of our future unless injuries decimate the team. Callaspo as a DH is equally ignorant…not to mention – once again – Royals fans seem to think he’s all that. He had one good season and hit all 11 home runs of his ML career last year. Let me guess…you also think Aviles is the answer. lol.

Callaspo or Kila at DH is the opposite of ignorant. the only reason we don’t want to do that, is because jose might have somewhat of a decent first half and get us a c prospect to be a contenders bat off the bench, then callaspo or kila or fields get some DH at bats and should.

Actually Brian, if you look at Callaspo minor league numbers in his last two years in AAA you can see that his year last year is closer to minor league line. 60 xbh’s is nothing to sneeze at it’s not all about HR’s. I’m sorry if you have trouble accepting the fact that the Royals actually have a three really good players and a handful of good players.

Saw Hernandez pitch a no-hitter at Hagerstown about five years ago. He had some stuff…
