Cubs Haven’t Begun Serious Trade Talks

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 3, 2010 at 9:38am CDT

Whether or not the Angels want to acquire a Cubs bat may not matter just yet. Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that there has been very little trade talk recently for the 24-29 Cubs. That could change, but GM Jim Hendry says he’s still waiting for his team to get hot.

''If we get it going and have a couple of good weeks, we can [get back in it],” Hendry said. “We've done that before. We need to do it now.''

It’s not clear whether the Angels are interested in Derrek Lee, but the first baseman obviously doesn’t want to talk about it. Lee declined to answer questions about his no-trade clause.

As Wittenmyer notes, Lee, Xavier Nady and Ted Lilly are free agents after the season and the resurgent Carlos Silva could appeal to teams looking at starters. For now, though, trade talks have yet to pick up.

They need a 1B and we need bullpen help.

D.P. Lee for a Brian Fuentes or Fernando Rodney?

If the Cubs start selling off major peieces (in effect sacrificing this season for future success) then what the bullpen looks like isn’t going to matter. I would just call up some young fringish prospect arms and see what they have in the pen so they will more known quantities (good or bad) for next year.

really? I think Lee even with down numbers is worth much more then that. Fuentes or Rodney arent really useful to the cubs, i dont see how that would work. Im sure the Cubs will want a prospect of longer term use

Lee isnt going to be considered by many teams except for LA only because they dont have Morales til the end of the season, not until he surges and levels off. He could be a great low cost high reward pickup to if someone wanted to take the risk, but i dont think risk is something you want if your a contending team

The Cubs should considering trading the majority of this team away. Ramirez, Lee, Lily, Nady, Silva, Theriot, anything not young and useful and start rebuilding now

I’m not sure why the Cubs ever need to rebuild. They’re seemingly in the same position as the Yankees and Red Sox. They should have been reloading several seasons ago when it was apparent that this current club’s window had closed. It goes way beyond the constraints of a pending ownership change. They tried to milk those mid 00’s teams for way too long. You can’t screw that chicken forever. They aren’t the only club to do this…but they have no excuse given the financial abilities they hold over most clubs. The problem with the Cubs..besides horrid injuries has always been the team and fan bases clutch on their heroes…even when they are way past their obvious effectiveness.

its ok if they do. my giants have the curse of moving to SF. and it doesn’t look any better for the cubs then it does the giants.

The future looks good for the Cubs and anybody that they move should be for decent prospects. They have some nice young players in Castro, Cashner, Colvin, Wells, Soto and Marmol with some more on the way. To add onto what other people have said, I would also look to move Fukudome and open up RF for Colvin.

That kind of thinking will land you a job in the Cubs Front Office…be careful there pal 🙂

Wouldn’t that be cool? To do that for a living instead of bashing the ones that do 🙂 Unfortunately there is probably way too much politics involved!

marmol is the most 50/50 closer in the game. When he is on he is right there with MO and Nathan as the best in the bigs. But when he is in his head and walks guys he is one of the worst, still a great piece to build around.

The cubs should trade every Vet of value they can and get what ever they can just to load up their farm, bring up the young guys to give them more than September experience. So should the whtiesox….Key figure the cubs need to keep. wells, dempster, soto, castro, theriot, culvin, marmol, get rid of everyone else bring up AAA guys and load the farm with some top prospects and some mid level guys. same with the whitesox they need to keep peavy, danks, santos, putz, thronton, pena, beckham, carlos, rios, nix and get rid of everyone else and load up again

The Cubs should move Lee, Lilly, Silva, and Nady for sure at the deadline. I would shop Fukudome and Ramirez as well. Same rules as always apply to Soriano and Zambrano, if someone offers to take their money then do it, although it won’t happen.

Jay Jackson needs to come up and get some starts in September, at least. Josh Vitters needs ABs in September as well. Obviously Castro will be up playing everyday. Cashner needs to log some innings in the pen. Brett Jackson could possibly make it up in September as well.
