Tigers Designate Enrique Gonzalez For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | August 23, 2010 at 1:25pm CDT

The Tigers designated righty Enrique Gonzalez for assignment to make room for outfielder Casper Wells, according to the team.

Gonzalez, 28, posted a 3.81 ERA, 4.5 K/9, and 5.9 BB/9 with four home runs allowed in 26 relief innings for the Tigers this year.  He was signed to a minor league deal in January and made 11 decent Triple A starts before getting the call in June.  Gonzalez has logged time with four organizations in the last four years, pitching for the Tigers, Red Sox, Padres, and Diamondbacks.

I wonder if the Tigers recalled Wells with an eye toward dealing Johnny Damon.

Thats a very good idea. I didnt think about that until I saw what you put. I kinda hope the Tigers can get rid of Damon and get at least something in return.

If they dump Damon, it’s about salary relief, not about getting a return.

They definitely need that salary relief.

Doubtful. The Tigers optioned Jeff Frazier (OF) a couple of days ago because their bullpen was gassed and they called up Schlereth (RP). They can’t recall Frazier yet, but this is the move to balance the roster again. EGonz (RP) is DFA’d and Wells (who has been hitting much better in the 2nd half and already on the 40) is recalled.

Enrique Gonzalez is one of the nicest guys on the team. Sorry he was DFA’d

Enrique belongs in the major leagues ahead of Dan Schlereth or Alfredo Figaro, but he obviously has no future with the Tigers at this time. He’s out of options, so he’ll also be clearing a space on the 40 man roster. Dombrowski is salivating at the idea of forcing Cale Iorg onto the roster.

Since when did that stop Dombrowski from putting him at shortstop?

no. schlereth needs the experience. and while get gave up a few runs against the yanks, he has the raw talent to be downright filthy. i think he struck out 4 in two innings. lets see what the kid can do. figaro has less talent than schlereth but i think the tigers do see something in him. enrique was pretty useless and the tigers have no plans for him.

Enrique Gonzalez’s numbers weren’t bad enough to warrant a DFA. Casey Fein, who they DFA earlier in the season is a player that warrants DFA….

I would’ve rather DFA’d Thomas. But Gonzalez was a good choice. He didn’t have much of a future with the Tigers.
