White Sox To Re-Sign A.J. Pierzynski

The White Sox have agreed to sign A.J. Pierzynski, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Rosenthal hears that the sides are moving toward a two-year, $8MM deal, but he notes that the catcher's salary is unconfirmed. Jon Heyman of SI.com confirms that Pierzynski will earn $8MM over two years (Twitter link).

LOL… I’m laughing so hard. Would have been one depressing day after Leafs losing, Jays signing AJP but 50% ain’t that bad.

Big day for the WhiteSox though.

  5. Big day for my Sox. I really wonder, though, what to do with Viciedo and Flowers now? Neither has a position now. I wonder if they could each be dealt for a reliever, or maybe combined in a package for a guy like BJ Upton? Would that be plausible/ enough?

    • shysox 5 years ago

i guess it really depends how much money the white sox have to spend

      • jwsox 5 years ago

or are willing to spend…i bet they havea few more signings…kenny isnt going to let ozzie tell him how to build a team this year as you can tell by the dunn signins….AJ had a monster second half hopefully he does not get off to as bad of a start…

        • shysox 5 years ago

God, I really hate the AJ signing, I hoped it would be 1 YR/3 MIL with a club option for 2012. I hoped we would take a gamble on Russell Martin, but that won’t happen anymore. Even in a down year, he had a .347 OBP, compared to AJ’s .300 OBP. Hopefully we sign either Manny Delcarmen or Taylor Buchholz, and I would really like the Sox to go after Jack Cust, as their DH because well, despite the fact that he’s a poor man’s Adam Dunn, he hit .270 and posted a OBP near .400, and would probably not cost more than 5 MIL per year. Edwin Encarnacion might be an option for 3rd base if we decide to trade Brent Morel. So let me take a shot at it..

          LF Juan Pierre
          C A.J Piersynski
          CF Alex Rios
          1B Adam Dunn
          DH Jack Cust/Manny/Berkman/Konerko
          RF Carlos Quentin
          SS Alexei Ramirez
          3B Mark Teahen
          2B Gordon Beckham

          Danks
          Floyd
          Jackson
          Buehrle
          Peavy
          MRP: ???????
          MRP: Linebrink
          MRP: Pena
          MRP: Delcarmen
          MRP: Santos
          SU: Thornton
          CL: ????????

          • you are forgetting Chris Sale as a SP or RP

          • jwsox 5 years ago

no no no no no….morell wont get traded there is no point…he is the best option at thrid for the whitesox…also berkman wont sign with the sox ever and i wouldnt want him his ego is too hurt from 05 still and he cant really hit anymore…cust is a good option for DH as a back up back up back up back up plan…it really still looks like konerko is going to be on the sox and split time at 1st and DH with dunn…i would take a flier out on pena before cust and vicedio as well…mark teahan will no be a starter next season he will be a super sub…dyan viciedo will start at 3rd before he does…MAnny wont be back because also he cant really hit for power anymore…

edwin is not a good option at thrid he has never really put together a good full season i would rather see the cheaper option of vicedio there..manny delcarmin and taylor are good ideas for the pen..i would rather see them try to sign putz to close with santos getting one more year as a set up guy….putz-thonrton-santos-linebrink..only really need a long relif guy, andother lefty and one more guy…those type can be brought up from AAA to fill out

    • Jerze 5 years ago

i hope they keep viciedo as a backup for 3rd/1st (maybe even start at 3rd and make teahen a utilty guy/4th OF). Viciedo looked good to me last year..lots of contact and power. Flowers..please trade him while he still has value. not a fan.

      • Morel will start at 3rd, Teahen will be in Mark DeRosa mold. I like Teahen as that, he just is paid too much.

      • jwsox 5 years ago

all whitesox fans need to realize morell is our starting 3rd basemen with vicedio as the back up…I would not even be surprised to see teahan traded or DFA’d…and let omar and vicideo be the back up infielders

      • Red_Line_9 5 years ago

I think KW was trying to trade Flowers last season while he still had value. There weren’t too many teams jumping for him. He’ll probably ship him off in a Josh Fields type of deal. Everything that Flowers could offer them they already have signed until he’s in his late 20’s anyway…and it’s not like he’s going to show up as AJ’s defensive sub.

    • Antonio Nicarelli 5 years ago

they both go back to the minors where they belong. We do not need to unload our young talent; we need to develop it. Viciedo especially is still very young. 2012 will be here before you know it.

      • see where your coming from on Viciedo, but by the the time AJ will be gone, Flowers will be the young age of… 27. Thats not young by any means for a guy with little success above AA.

        • Red_Line_9 5 years ago

Flowers isn’t much of a prospect. The fact that KW would give AJ two years tells you what the internal scouting is saying about him. I’m not even sure what they do with him, because it doesn’t appear he can handle the glove well enough to be a defensive backup.

Best bet would be to include him in a deal to a team that would take a chance on him either as a catcher or DH.

KW is usually great at over-glorifying the Sox prospects..but even he hasn’t been able to keep Flowers from sinking.

    • jwsox 5 years ago

flowers will spend another season in the minors and probably be the starter in 2012 with AJ backing him up…OR depening on ST he could be the bck up or split time wtih AJ….vicedio will either man 1st if they strike out on PK or another 1stbasemen…or split time at 1stand DH with Dunn…the whitesox could offer vicedio-mitchell(or jordan dank)-reliever prospect or two for upton but i doubt it works…

    • Retnan 5 years ago

Well obviously what happens with Viciedo will depend on whether Konerko is resigned. If not then Vic will probably be at first and Dunn DH (whether he likes it or not).

  6. hallelujah! he’s not a Blue Jay

So for those wondering, Yes, it is too late to cancel your “custom designed” Pierzynski Blue Jay jersey order. I called MLB.com shop’s customer service line, and after 5 minutes of collective customer support team laughter, I just hung up….

    Cowley is a clown.

    • fisk72 5 years ago

He writes a once-a-week column for the S Times on college football/basketball. What a tool. He has no sources left.

      • jwsox 5 years ago

are you serious? he is one of the best writers in chicago…anything whitesox he breaks it which is why he is 670 the scores(the whitesox radio station) indsider…he broke peavy, rios dunn AJ before anyone else

        • He also has a huge hard on against KW so most of his stories are biased against him

  11. rzepczynski 5 years ago

lol 2 years 8 mill good thing it wasnt the jays that seems like a huge overpay… but market is crazy to start this offseason i guesssss….

    • danny_duberstein 5 years ago

Huge overpay? All he would need to do is produce 1 WAR each year to be worth his contract, which he has basically done his whole career…

    • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

If by “huge overpay” you mean a bargain, then I agree. Look how much the other FA catchers got this offseason….

    • jwsox 5 years ago

yeah 4 per year is a great deal for AJ

    • overpay…? Go look at what some of the other contracts have been then rethink your post.

  12. Kenny Williams flying under the radar as usual.

Is there enough money left for Konerko?

    • Think there is. Though I’d personally rather have Pena and allocate the savings on Pauly to resign Danks long term

      • firealyellon 5 years ago

Reinsdorf is a 75 year old multi-millionaire. The savings ship has sailed….

        • jwsox 5 years ago

75 year old multi-multi-multi- millionaire…thats why he spent this season on the bull and is spending on the sox he wants both teams to win or at least make it to the championship once before he croaks….

    • Jonathan Stone 5 years ago

Do you still want Konerko with Dunn in the fold?

      • jwsox 5 years ago

yes…they split time at DH and 1st it gives dyan times to develop in the minors and if konerko can reproduce what he did last season we would have aleft power threat and a righty power threat along with rios and CQ

    • jwsox 5 years ago

Its not about how much is left its about how much Jerry will allow kenny to spend…this is a kenny williams offseason…i bet konerko is next if not watch for carlos pena or adam laroach(worst case sceniero vicedio starts at 1st) watch for trade rumors for prince or adrian…this is kenny showing his hand to ozzie and saying “ozzie this is my team and your going to play the players i get no more you telling me what to get”

  13. thegrayrace 5 years ago

Catchers are going fast! Buck, Torrealba, Varitek and now Pierzynski.Olivo and Barajas the only decent options left… at this rate, I guess the Dodgers tender Martin.

  14. davestiebrules 5 years ago

    Phew!

    Sincerely,
    Jays Fan

  15. CaseyBlakeDeWitt 5 years ago

A little off topic. How many captains are left in the big leagues? Jeter and Varitek and that’s it? I know Derek Lee and Konerko used to be captains..

    • Konerko has been the Sox “captain” for years. Didn’t believe in wearing the ‘C’ though, felt it took away from the team.

  16. meanguygary 5 years ago

    Thank you Ken Williams.

  17. Just proves that you should always assume the exact opposite of what Cowley “hears.” I wonder if the Jays were even in the mix for AJ. On Waddle and Silvey this morning, AJ claimed that nothing was going on with his contract. Most likely, nothing was going because KW was busy signing one of the bigger FAs available. As for the poster who said what to do with Flowers and Viciedo….I got an idea….keep them at AAA where they belong. Dayan is very young and needs to learn the strike zone and Flowers regressed so much that he is not even a Top 10 prospect in the organization anymore. Flowers IMO is expendable to trade for a veteran, cheap LH relief pitcher.

    • jwsox 5 years ago

agreed josh phigley(sp) is being slowly groomed as the catcher of the future

      • mboss 5 years ago

Phegley will not be the catcher of the future. He had a rare illness the 2nd half of this year and just had his spleen removed this past week. Regardless of his health issues he really hasn’t hit much since joining the Sox and he is not a very good defensive catcher. Michael Blanke looks like the catcher of the future unless Flowers stays and has a good season in 2011.

    • Red_Line_9 5 years ago

The Sox already have a catcher of the future….KW just hasn’t traded for him yet.

  18. ditkaforgov 5 years ago

My guess is Flowers gets traded for a reliever, I was assuming they would sign Paulie and possibly Putz, I think they have enough money for Konerko still though.

  19. switchhitingjesus 5 years ago

Now the jays can have a catcher who can play defense and not worry about aj’s crap.

  20. This is exactly as Dave Cameron said it: a bargain in this market. Guys like John Buck are getting double-figure contracts.
Also, rather have Dunn and AJ for 64 Million than V-Mart for the offered 48 Million

    • I’d rather have V-Mart IF he was catching (since AJ doesn’t exactly have the strongest arm either), but reports are the Tigers are going to use him as a DH. As a catcher, he’s top 5, as a 1b/dh/corner of/traditional power position, he’s slightly above average.

      • jwsox 5 years ago

vmart is widely known as one of the worst catchers at blocking and throwing runners out…aj can at least block…vmart is a 1st basemen/ dh who thinks he is a catcher…aj is a catcher at the tail end of his career who should probably be moved to a different position but can still call one heck of a game and hardly allows balls to get past him..

i want to know where you getting that vmart is a top 5 catcher? offensivly yes but in terms of D WHICH IS WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE A CATHER THERE IS NO WAY HE IS A TOP 5

        • I am pretty sure he meant offensively. He was comparing how Vmart rated offensively as a catcher vs. as a 1B/DH type.

  21. hodag435 5 years ago

wow. what a day for the sox

  22. Wow Dodgers just non-tendered Russell Martin. Kind of wish we signed him instead, but he’s probably guaranteed to go to Boston now. Good to have AJ back in the fold.

  23. What’s with all these generic “Good thing he didn’t sign with the Jays! –Jays fan” posts? Are you that high on unproven Arencibia or do you just hate Pierzynski for no reason?

  24. Thank goodness! How was I going to live with only being able to boo A.J. 6 times a year? Glad he’s staying with the Sux, a truly loathsome player on a truly loathsome division rival.

    Love,

    A Twins Fan

    • I’ve never understood the booing, he’s never talked bad against his time there or burned any bridges. Twins fans do it since everybody else started to.

    • Hoosierdaddy92 5 years ago

not sure I understand the booing. if I am a twins fan, I love Aj. He landed them Liriano, Nathan, and most importantly BOOF BONSER!!!

  25. slider32 5 years ago

All this talk about the Jays just drove the price up for AJ. This is a good signing for the W-Sox.

  26. rockiesfan_303 5 years ago

This does not make much sense. Why? Give that money to Konerko and let Tyler Flowers catch.

    • westcoastwhitesox 5 years ago

Two more years of AJP for $8mil is a good deal considering how screwed the Sox would be if he signed elsewhere and Flowers continues to hit only minor-league pitching and not MLB pitching. I’d rather have AJP than Barajas or any other free agent catcher out there!

  27. rockiesfan_303 5 years ago

This does not make much sense. Why? Give that money to Konerko and let Tyler Flowers catch.

  28. Cowley is the best. He brings an edge to reporting that I love. The guy is very intelligent and also very funny. I know many of my fellow Sox fans hate him, but he’s a fun guy to read/ listen to.

  29. Andy Mc 5 years ago

he’s a clown. canada, a third world country, eh? hahaha.

  30. absolutely agree. Cowley might be the funniest reporter in sports, follow him on twitter…its pure gold

  31. I agree, clown indeed (sox fan)

  32. thebigdog 5 years ago

C’mon Andy, everyone knows that Canada is not a third world country — it is a suburb of Wisconsin.

  33. If it included Konerko, yes, but that isn’t done yet. Hopefully in next few days. That is a very good lineup, even if Paulie leaves and they get a Carlos Pena

  34. firealyellon 5 years ago

Konerko will only play for 1) WSox, 2) the DBacks., 3) A contender out west

all signs point to WSox. I’ll guess 4 years/$45M.

  35. 4/45 for Pauly is a lot… not in annual salary but in years. 4 years for a guy of his age… I’d rather have Pena for one year/ 7 million. I think anything over 3/36 has to be too much.

  36. because he wanted a column.

  37. jwsox 5 years ago

what? your clearly not a real white sox fan…he has done nothing but good things for the whitesox…has never pulled his pre-madonna act while in the black and white and is loved in that club house..

  38. You mean Logan Morrison. Let’s be realistic here.

  39. Exactly, which is the reason I follow his twitter constantly. Not to mention he’s great as a reporter.

  40. Yea I was joking. I saw those trade talks, I read that Stanton was too valuable a prospect and the prospect being discussed with Logan Morrison. Either way, a moot point.

  41. jwsox 5 years ago

yeah i bet he takes a pay cut..the guy is a gamer and loves jerry if jerry offers him a slightly below market deal he will take it seeing that kenny wants to win again and win very very soon..I would love pena at 1 yr 5mill base 3-4 incentives option for 2nd year or dont offer ARB and buy out…he is a much much better defensive 1stbasemen and has a ton of power..but he is a back up to konerko…1-trade for adrian 2- konerko 3-pena 4- laroach 5- lee MAYBE…or just put vicedio there or move carlos there
