Three Teams Interested In Bobby Crosby

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 13, 2011 at 4:54pm CDT

Three teams are interested in Bobby Crosby, MLBTR has learned. Two American League clubs and one National League club have expressed interest in the 31-year-old. One of the interested teams is eyeing Crosby as a shortstop and the two others view him as a possible utility player.

Crosby is preparing to go to Spring Training and compete for a spot on a 25-man roster; the market for the former Rookie of the Year should become clearer within a week or so.

In 189 plate appearances for Pittsburgh and Arizona last year, Crosby hit .220/.294/.298 and played all four infield positions. The D'Backs released Crosby in August and there hasn't been any hot stove news about him since.

That slugging percentage is mammoth! I guess there was only room for one Crosby in Pittsburgh.

the Champion Giants need a backup to durable Miguel Tejada. I’m guessing they might be the NL team

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Padres were one of the teams interested in Crosby as a utility player.

The Padres signed Kevin Frandsen as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training, who as of today would be the front runner to land the utility role. I actually, (despite Frandsen’s relatively mediocre defensive stats) according to his UZR/150, believe he would do an adequate job playing some 2nd, SS, 3rd and possibly even getting some Ab’s at first to spell Hawpe.

I’m slightly worried that the NL club is the Pirates.

Unless these teams are interested in hiring him to shag flies during BP, there is absolutely no reason to sign this stiff. Crosby is easily one of the worst ROY’s ever, and he’s been on a steady regression since 2005. No thanks.

The GM’s of those three teams should be canned, because they’re clueless.

I’ll be willing to bet $10 that the Nationals are the NL team. They seem to have a lot of interest in garbage players like Crosby

I agree. But Mike Fontenot isn’t a prototypical backup shortstop defensively. I’d say mostly because of his weak noodle arm.

I’d be willing to bet my money the Red Sox are interested, they said the American League teams are looking at him as a Utility guy, that’s the last piece the Red Sox are looking for

This reminds me of the time Peter Gammons predicted Bobby Crosby to win the AL MVP award. It must’ve been before the ’06 season, but I can’t remember for sure.

I understand from sources that The San Francisco Giants ar talking with both Free Agent
Shortstops Cristian Guzman and Bobby Crosby.. The Giants have only a real back-up
shortstop in Emmaunel Burris.. Crosby would make alot of sense as he can spell Miguel
Tejada.. I understand that 2nd baseman Freddy Sanchez could be missing a big chunk
of the Giants opening season schedule.. Mike Fontenot will start with possible free agent Edgar Gonzalez possibly making the team until Sanchez comes back from his injury.
