Quick Hits: Red Sox, Rangers, Yankees

On this date in 1979, the Pirates beat the Orioles 4-1 to win the World Series in seven games. Willie Stargell, the '79 NL MVP, hit a two-run home run in the victory. Here are links for Monday night as we await the beginning of this year's World Series…

  • Jim Callis of Baseball America envisions Matt Barnes and Anthony Ranaudo in Boston's 2015 rotation.
  • Callis also explains that the Dodgers weren't sure what they had when they drafted right-hander Edwin Jackson in 2001. He was athletic enough to pitch or play in the outfield.
  • Bob Simpson, a co-chairman of the Rangers' board, told reporters, including Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com, that the Rangers are committed to sustaining their current level of play.
  • Victor Martinez told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports that he's prepared to catch in 2012. The switch-hitter didn't catch at all after August 4th because of a knee sprain, but he's willing to don the tools of ignorance again. Martinez's health will affect Detroit's level of interest in backup catchers this offseason.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests it will be hard to get the Yankees to offer C.C. Sabathia much more than Cliff Lee obtained from the Phillies ($120MM over five years). Sabathia is expected to opt out of the four years and $92MM remaining on his contract this offseason and though he enjoys playing in New York, it doesn't seem like he's going to give the Yankees a hometown discount.
  • The Yankees favor Yu Darvish over C.J. Wilson of the Rangers, according to Sherman.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer is highly regarded by the Angels. The Orioles hold D'Backs exec Jerry Dipoto in similarly high esteem, according to Olney (on Twitter).

    wilson + darvish > CC

You are talking about cost, aren’t you?

      • baconz11 4 years ago

im talking about spending their money efficiently to fill out the rotation. on a per year basis, it will cost a little bit more for wilson and darvish, as most of darvish’s fee will be in the posting, but what the yankees need is depth. with their offense if they have 2 solid #2 type starters it would be more valuable to them than CC.

cant see yankees letting cc go

Is exactly the deal I was thinking makes sense for everyone. 24 per year.

      • SIX years? God I hope not. We’re already a shockingly old team. Let the Red Sox pay the last $110 or so of that, in return for just about nothin’. I’d rather finish 86-76 for two years in a row now, than for four years in a row beginning in two years.

“The Yankees favor Yu Darvish over C.J. Wilson of the Rangers, according to Sherman.”

That could happen, but chances are they would, Only if…..

Do Japanese pitchers ever work out? Especially considering the cost. If I was a GM, I wouldn’t touch one with a 30 foot pole.

Depends on your definition. Nomo was considered successful but his career ERA+ in the majors was lower than Matsuzaka. In fact of Japanese starters who have started at least 20 games in the majors, well it ain’t a pretty list… one could make an argument that Kuroda has been the most successful.

There are a couple of relievers though who had some successful campaigns.

Nomo had some jaw dropping seasons.

        • start_wearing_purple 4 years ago

Randy Johnson in 2001 was a jaw dropping season. Pedro Martinez in 2000 was a jaw dropping season. Greg Maddux in 1994 was a jaw dropping season. The last 5 years Sandy Koufax pitched were jaw dropping.

Nomo had a great rookie year, a good follow up, a sudden resurgence when he was 34. Nothing I’d ever call jaw dropping.

Look up his ’04 numbers.  I think you might change your mind.

          • heh, well done sir.

2.54 Era and 236 Ks in 28 games isn’t jaw dropping? I think your standards are too high.  Would you at least accept “pants dropping?”

          •  what stats are you looking at? By far the best japanese import and had some CY Young worthy seasons.

The Orioles think highlyof DiPoto? Lots of teams do, though, right? Including lots of teams whose owners aren’t string-pulling, deal-squashing crackpots. Unless DiPoto is assured he’s going to have a much freer reign than MacPhail ever got under Angelos, I can’t imagine why he’d consider the job. Not while other opening for non-lunatics are on the board, anyway.

    • Rabbitov 4 years ago

There aren’t lots of teams that need a GM and Angelos, like Danny Glove in every movie he’s ever been in, is getting too old for this business.

      • The only reason I understand this reference is because of How I Met Your Mother.  Also, DiPoto and Buck supposedly have a connection from AZ.  Wanna go camp out the warehouse for his interview tomorrow with me Rabbitov?
