AL West Links: Beane, Athletics, Andrus

Four years ago today, the Mariners acquired Erik Bedard from the Orioles in exchange for five players: Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Kameron Mickolio, and Tony Butler. The deal was one of our Trades of the Decade. Here's the latest from the AL West…

  • Athletics GM Billy Beane recently signed a lengthy contract extension, though ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider req'd) opines that losing may wear on him if the team doesn't get back into contention. He wonders if a potential new Dodgers owners could come calling in the near future.
  • If the Athletics do move to San Jose, owner Lew Wolff says they would be labeled the San Jose A's, reports Joe Stiglich of The Bay Area News (on Twitter).
  • The Rangers bought out Elvis Andrus' three arbitration years, but assistant GM Thad Levine told Richard Durrett of ESPN Texas that the club does want to keep him beyond that.

If beane wanted to leave he wouldn’t have resigned for 7 years..

Maybe he wants to be a transformative member of a team that moves so that he can work with a slightly larger payroll and make it to the playoffs sometimes. It’s not like San Jose would be that big of a move for him…

According to FanGraphs, the five players acquired in the Erik Bedard trade contributed 11.6 Wins Above Replacement to the Baltimore Orioles over the past four seasons, not exactly a windfall but twice the 5.8 WAR Bedard contributed to the Seattle Mariners before the lefthander’s trade to the Boston Red Sox last July.

You are comparing 5 players to 1?

I am … of Baltimore’s 11.6 WAR, 9.1 WAR came from Adam Jones, who remains under his team’s control for two more seasons.

  5. As long as the guy who did the Marlins’ new look and stadium doesn’t do the San Jose A’s I’m cool…

And before that they were the Philadelphia and Kansas City A’s. If they are going to play San Jose, they should be called San Jose.

No way.  They should call themselves the Brooklyn A’s.  Makes the most sense.

The highest draft pick the A’s have had since 1998 is number 10. I fail to see how they are as bad as you say they have been in the past. I remember in 2008 they were supposed to lose 100 and they lost 85 and in 2010 they were supposed to loose 90 and they lost 81. This years oakland team will not be as bad as people think.

I agree with everything you said, but seriously, you don’t know how to spell the work ‘lose?’  As a SPORTS FAN?

From one spelling Nazi to the next: Always double-check your spelling if you are going to lecture others about their own spelling.
