Mets Claim Anthony Recker

By Zachary Links | October 25, 2012 at 4:23pm CDT

The Mets have claimed catcher Anthony Recker from the Cubs, according to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald (via Twitter).  Recker was designated for assignment by Chicago yesterday to make room for right-hander Carlos Gutierrez.

Recker, 29, posted a .143/.263/.245 slash line in 58 plate appearances for the Athletics and Cubs in 2012.  For his career, Recker has a .277/.359/.474 career batting line in over 1,200 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

Jason Bay in a catchers uniform. What did Sandy Alderson see in this guy?

Recker is s a good defensive Catcher. We have watched him handle Pitchers and even got a chance to talk to him a little in A’s ST at Papago in AZ for the last 3+ years. He is a big, strong kid from Allentown, PA.. Suzuki was in his way but then Derek Norris developed quickly after coming over from Washington in the Gio trade. Recker caught Cahill, Brett Anderson, Braden, Colon, Gio alot. A’s also have another stud catcher playing in the AFL, Max Stassi. Truthfully, Recker has the build and looks of Piazza. That could be the reason why we are so high on him. Now lets hope he develops as a hitter. He will do well under his former Manager, Bob Geren. Win Win move as who knows what Kai Gronauer will be? Now, lets see Alderson pull off another small trade with KC to bring another Jersey guy, starter, Vin Mazzaro (another former Athletic) over for the rotation so that Mets fans never have to endure watching Mike pelfrey pitch for them again. While I agree about Recker, definitely not Mazzarro – throws in the high 80s low 90s at best and has command issues. Had a horrible time in KC

This had to happen. With Lutz already on the 40 man you have to reunite only the two out of three Alvernia alums to make it in professional baseball. They also were teammates with Lutz’s dad as the coach. Fun fact for the day…

good fact. he was going to walk on at UDel, but they had two scholarship catchers. UDel coach knew he was good enough to play and said he had a friend at a DIII school who needed a catcher. Thankfully he took that opportunity. I wonder where the two UDel catchers are now?

I’m guessing you knew him/went to school with him? That’s a few on here that are from the Lehigh Valley like myself

sorry, didn’t check this for a few days. yup, i graduated a year ahead of him at Catty. Played baseball and football with him. Still a very humble guy, usually bump into him during the holidays around town.

I’m surprised that the Pirates didn’t claim Recker instead.

After claiming Recker from the Cubs, they will not re-sign Shoppach.
