Rangers To Sign Chris Snyder

By Jeff Todd | March 25, 2014 at 12:42pm CDT

The Rangers have agreed to a minor league deal with catcher Chris Snyder, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (via Twitter). Snyder was released just yesterday by the Nationals.

The 33-year-old will provide depth to the team while starter Geovany Soto works to return from knee surgery. Snyder's last substantial MLB action came in 2012 with the Astros, when he put up a .176/.295/.308 line in 258 plate appearances. He had a strong spring line in limited action, putting up a .294/.381/.529 triple-slash with one long ball in 21 plate appearances. The Rangers apparently preferred him to other available options, such as Ramon Hernandez and Yorvit Torrealba.

Good fit. I wish Snyder well: he was never healthy with the Pirates, but he did his job well enough when he could.

You Rangers fans should be grateful that Dave Dombrowski is not your GM. He would have traded Roughned Odor for Snyder days before he got released.

Yes, Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Davis, and the Garza deal come to mind. But at least all of those trades were to at least attempts to get someone that could improve the team at the time. If he had held on to Koji Uehara, that deal would have looked better as now he’s a top-5 closer. Still heavily in Balimore’s but no one saw Davis emergence that likely.
Meanwhile, with my Tigers, I fail to see how giving away Fister and Lombardozzi for a washed up 37 SS on a minor league deal and two high floor low ceiling minor league pitchers makes a team that needs to win this season/maybe next season any better.

Think Snyder will just be the Vet teams just stash at AAA in case of emergency and Daniels is still looking for someone else right now for the next several months to take the place of Soto, I don’t see a platoon of Soto/Snyder working out for any team with playoff hopes, as many Ranger fans will probably be calling for someone a tad better of late.

JP Arencibia is also in the mix.
