Yorvit Torrealba To Opt Out Of Angels Deal

Yorvit Torrealba is set to opt out of his deal with the Angels and become a free agent today, tweets Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.  The veteran was waiting to find out if he would be on the Angels' big league roster and it appears that he wasn't going to make the cut.

Torrealba, 35, hit .240/.295/.285 in 196 plate appearances as the backup to Wilin Rosario in Colorado in 2013.  He gunned down 29 percent of attempted base stealers in 2013, which is right in line with his career mark of 30 percent. A career .256/.315/.379 batter, Torrealba was brought aboard to provide Halos with some veteran depth behind primary catchers Chris Iannetta and Hank Conger.  Now, he'll try and find a big league opportunity elsewhere.

Pirates could get him maybe? Didn’t there backup just get injured.

Yes, but Neal Huntington said that there weren’t looking for a catcher and they’d stick with Tony Sanchez.

Huntington said he wouldn’t trade for a catcher but he should def take a look into signing him. They have very little depth, especially major league caliber depth, at catcher and with Stewart out an injury to Martin would be a disaster. They should sign him to back up Martin, send Sanchez to Indy as planned and trade or release torrealba when Stewart comes back.

Wonder if Torrealba would be considered a “better ” veteran back-up to Wieters in Baltimore. Steve Clevenger has had a very good spring training but wonder if the O’s would want more defensive experience in the back-up catcher slot.

I’d like to see Clevenger get the chance, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if this happened.

I’m guessing he goes to the Rangers after the Soto news today.
