Efren Navarro Elects Free Agency

By Zachary Links | February 28, 2016 at 2:15pm CDT

The Orioles announced that Efren Navarro was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.  The outfielder subsequently refused the assignment and elected free agency.

Navarro, 29, was designated for assignment by the Angels in January and later traded to the Orioles. Navarro has seen Major League action with the Angels in four of the past five seasons, totaling a .246/.303/.324 batting line in 280 plate appearances. He’s hit just one home run in that time, though he’s shown a bit more pop in the minors, where he is a .316/.378/.449 hitter with 32 home runs in 2344 plate appearances at Triple-A. Navarro didn’t hit much with the Angels, but he’s posted solid walk and strikeout rates (7.5 percent and 16.1 percent, respectively). He’s also graded out reasonably well in both Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved at first base and in left field in his small samples of work at each position.

Navarro was slated to join the competition for corner outfield playing time in Baltimore but he’ll now seek an opportunity elsewhere.

Indians should sign him for 1B/OF.Navarro would have an edge over all the outfielders based on his ability to play 1B. Navarro would be a good add for the Indians bench.

It’s always possible. It could see it happening if he doesn’t get any interest on the open market. Happened with Chris Gimenez and the Rangers back in 2014.

Maybe Halos will resign him to play LF. He fits their budget minded roster.

Budget minded? Their payroll is over $160 million. That’s almost $40 million more than the MLB average. It would be better to describe the Angels as having a Luxury tax minded pay roll.

They have their money tied to Puljos and Weaver at the expense of LF, 2B, SS, C, and 3B. They foolishly allocated their money and now are paying the price after deciding they cannot afford to go over the luxury tax despite having the worst farm system in the major leagues to restock major league roster. If they don’t spend on major league ready players how competitive can they truly be?

At the expense of SS,C and 3B? Please. SS HAS SIMMONS! One of the best SS in the game! C is good defensively with Soto and Perez with potential for offense with Perez. 3B we have Yunel a solid bat. The only question marks right now are LF which can be occupied by Choi,Nava,Gentry, Cowart or Kubitza and 2B. Stop with the trolling. Its getting old.

All the players you mentioned are average or below besides Simmons. The Angels are not gonna be very competitive this year

Oh so your also one of the lucky ones in MLBTR who has a crystal ball. You don’t know what Choi brings to the table as well as Kubitza or Cowart. Perez is a great defender as is Soto which is the most important thing for a C, the offense is a plus. Not every team has Posey behind the plate. Yunel’s bat is above average. I’m not sold on the predictions you witches have. I’ll believe the predictions when I see it happen. My only concern is 2B as of now, the rest isn’t because I have yet to see what Choi, Cowart, Kubitza are made of. All 3 don’t have a track record that shows what they for sure will give you.

I agree defense is good but how many teams win games for having the best defense? None. You have to be able to score runs and the Angels don’t have enough offensive threats outside of Trout, possibly Calhoun, and Pujols if he’s healthy.

Simmons? I didn’t even read the rest of your post, but after that it doesn’t matter.

How many teams win games for having the best defense?

The Royals just won the World Series, off the back of a season-long exceptional defensive effort

          – First overall in team UZR/150 – 6.1,
          – First overall in RngR (by a massive margin)

It’s widely acknowledged that the KCR defense, and tailoring of defensive strengths, is the big reason why they were so successful.

Yes but they also had a pretty good lineup that can score runs along with an above average rotation last year. What I was saying was a team can’t win a game with perfect defense and not score a single run

You really think this Angels team won’t be capable of scoring a single run? The offense has plenty of question marks which is good and bad. Like I said we don’t know what Choi, Kubitza, Cowart will bring to the table even Cj Cron. The offense is also better by getting Yunel and adding his OBP to the top of the order for him to get on base and have Trout drive him in, that alone should create more opportunities for Trout to drive guys in. I’m positive this Angels team will surprise a lot of people. When you have the best player in baseball you always have a chance to compete.

Trout being the best in baseball is debatable but they don’t have much after Trout. If Calhoun could live up to his potential and Pujols stay healthy the Angels could be a good team but there are still some question marks with that team.
