Nationals Release Logan Schafer

By charliewilmoth | March 19, 2016 at 1:30pm CDT

Here are today’s minor moves from around the league.

  • The Nationals have announced that they’ve released outfielder Logan Schafer. (They also reassigned infielder Jason Martinson to the minors.) The Nats had signed Schafer to a minor-league deal in November. He hit 4-for-20 in Spring Training. The 29-year-old can play all three outfield positions and generally rates as a solid defender, particularly in a corner, but he hasn’t shown enough offense to stick in the Majors. Schafer appeared in all of the last five seasons with the Brewers, accumulating a career .212/.286/.319 line in 646 career plate appearances, including 143 last year. Milwaukee outrighted him after the season.

Hm. He could be a fit for the Phillies after losing Altherr

That’s an a awful idea. First of all, they have 5 outfielders who can be plugged in, including the 3 already projected to start the season. With Lough and Hunter who are both performing better than him, and a few outfield prospects who Rent far off. I wouldn’t waste the roster spot.

I’m going to have to disagree with you. Their 3 projected starters (even in the wake of the Altherr injury) are all outperforming Schafer. Furthermore, they have Lough and Hunter in camp, who are both outperforming him as well. Lastly, they have a few outfield prospects waiting in the wings. Personally, I wouldn’t waste the roster spot on Schafer. But, it’s not my decision.

Believe me as a Brewer fan watching him the last 5 years, you don’t want him!

In the right situation, he would be alright. He plays solid to even good defense.

For a team with a set outfield that could use a glove only type guy to play once in a while, why not?

Hope my Sox pick him up. He’s a perennial all star this year. Gonna hit .345 and win the MVP
