Not going to happen, but he’d be a good gamble in Detroit to replace Maybin, if he only gets short, make good, offers.
bobtillman
Too many good OFs out there in Free Agency or bad-contract assumption to bother with CarGo, unless it’s a one-year make-good type deal. And not a high dollar one. He’s got Tampa Rays written all over him, especially if they go into their 25th annual rebuild…..Longoria, Archer, Ordizzi, Colome anyone?
hozie007
I agree completely…his best years are behind him, he’s going to be a 10 HR 0.250 hitter with a full season of AB’s…so if that’s what a team needs, that’s what they can probably get for low dollars……otherwise, look for some new young talent.
Theresabrewing
Gomez has more pop than only a 10 homer full season.

I think Gomez will be back with the Rangers if he gives them a sweetheart discount for helping him revive his career.

Scott Boras client + sweetheart deal = does not compute

This is a guy that needs to be on the Orioles’ radar.
Good glove & arm, a little speed, good OBP, a little pop………all things they need.
I could see him in RF for the O’s for 2-3 years on a pretty friendly deal.
astrosfan4life
Buyer beware! He has a great arm, however he is completely inaccurate and will always forego the cut off man, even when it’s the right thing to do. He is the prime example of a guy with all the talent and tools in the world, however he can’t get out of his own way to use them.
He’s a huge risk at anything more than a one year deal to re establish himself.
arc89
3 years no way. 2 years I can see and maybe a third option year. He has Billy Butler decline written all over him.
randomness lez
No way he goes downhill as fast as Country Breakfast did.
His defensive value alone would make that hard to achieve.
astrosfan4life
Country Breakfast, haha. That’s funny.

“Anywhere but the Astros”
Signed Astros fan who watched the most undisciplined player ever last season and a half.
astrosfan4life
I just posted a very similar response above. He is not coachable and just does what he wants.
tsolid 2
Seems like he was Very coachable in Texas. Maybe Houston needs to look on the mirror.

Touche’! I’m a big fan of replacing our hitting and pitching coaches.

Don’t count out the rebuilding Brewers. That’s where his career took off. If things break the right way in the free agent market (and with a potential Braun trade) the Brewers might be able to pick Gomez up again during their rebuild. Even though their minors are stacked with outfield talent, the Brewers might not promote Lewis Brinson early enough to create a log jam in the outfield. That would be a low risk, high reward deal for the Brewers at the right price, of course. There’s very little guaranteed money on the roster, as well. He could be trade bait again at trade deadline or next offseason. Obviously, the Brewers wouldn’t receive another haul of the magnitude of the 2015 trade. This would be an outside chance because of the Brewers depth at the position. Also, it’s unlikely that a free agent, like him, would want to be signed if he almost certainly knows that he’ll be traded later in the year. Though he has stated enthusiastically that he would welcome a return to Milwaukee.

Would love to see what was in that medical report that led the Mets to pass on the trade.
Heard a lot of rumblings that his swing is being affected by his potentially degenerative health issues to the point of lessening his effectiveness.

Gomez to me has seemed to have a bunch of media hype early on and played like a guy who was way too full of himself. Often what happens with this personality type is that they don’t have the introspection capabilities to admit they aren’t the god like figure they think they are when stuff is going bad. They make excuses and blame everyone else around them so they don’t make the adjustments they need.
NOW… I don’t know Gomez that well so I’d be curious if any Brewers, Rangers or Astros fans who have seen him a lot have an opinion on the guy but he certainly look to me like the spoiled brat we all had on our teams and just never grew out of it.
I think he’d ruin the clubhouse chemistry on your fantasy team!!!
brewcrewbernie
Watched him for several years in Milwaukee. He plays with more flair and attitude than some people like, but I will say this about him. No player I’ve ever watched will out hustle Carlos Gomez. He’s full boar, all the time. Can’t question his effort.
tequilamockingbird
“No player I’ve ever watched will out hustle Carlos Gomez”.
You must very sheltered it appears. You must of not heard of Trout, Altuve?
It’s okay to be biased, just not ignorant.
astrosfan4life
I wouldn’t be so harsh, I agree with brew crew that the dude flat-out hustles, and greatly more than most. The difference between him and guys like Altuve/Trout is that they hustle AND play intelligently. Gomez is a loose cannon and his extreme hustle is over-shadowed by his boneheaded play.
tequilamockingbird
I complety agree with what you’re saying. I also believe there’s nothing wrong with playing with some flare. But to say he hands down hustles more than any other MLB player? Perhaps watching him in Houston I was deprived of truly appreciating the hustle expressed by brew crew. Then again, it’s tough to hustle down the line when striking out/grounding into sure double plays in most of your ab’s.
tsolid 2
You must not be watching the same games as most. He played TERRIBLE with the Stros, but he ALWAYS hustled. Just b/c the results weren’t there doesn’t mean you get to deny the effort. ALWAYS 100% effort, even on throws after catching routine fly balls.
tequilamockingbird
I watched/listened to most of the astros game. I’m not going to pretend like his hustle stood out because to be honest, it didn’t. Shouldn’t we be giving Jake Marisnick the same, definitely more, credit as Gomez? He played one of the best centerfield around the league yet somehow Gomez plays harder? The point that is being missed here is not calling out Gomez for lack of hustle, but the statement being made that “no one” plays harder than Gomez. While I’m not claiming he’s Carlos Lee during his time in Houston, I just didn’t see it extraordinary hustle. The point being made about him running down fly balls is irresponsible, that’s what outfielders are supposed to do. Did any Houston Astros fan at some point think to themselves, “Damn, he’s a stellar defender and hustles more than anyone in the league, we can live without him hitting”. I highly doubt that.
mmoritz22
I think it’s unfair to judge a guy you don’t even know. Gomez is immensely talented and had to make a huge amount of adjustments in the first place just to get his career rolling some years ago…I don’t think you can say he’s cocky, spoiled and not introspective, that’s not fair to him. Players go through phases, very simple, he could’ve been injured and had some coaching that didn’t really vibe with his approach in Houston. Players aren’t ‘done’ just cause they struggle…this dude is good cause he has mad tools and plays the game with passion and love. You can make a deep play off run with Gomez, no doubts.
nailz#4life
SF will sign him for 3 years…. my prediction
Deke
Thanks to everyone for the opinions on Gomez. Interesting about “hustle” I don’t remember him ever dogging it on any plays but yeah, he has always struck me as a player with a lack of intelligence so that rings true.
The “flair” thing isn’t a problem for me, I just remember a few times seeing him get into it with fans and then overcompensating with even more douchebaggery.
Deke
I think he fits the mold of SF looking for comeback players and bargains for sure. I just don’t think he would fit in SF chemistry wise.
