Shin-Soo Choo Hires Scott Boras

By Luke Adams 2 | February 26, 2010 at 6:40pm CDT

We can add another name to our list of Scott Boras' clients. Shin-Soo Choo has hired Boras to be his agent, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter).

Choo will be arbitration-eligible after this season and eligible for free agency after the 2013 campaign. The Indians have talked recently about wanting to extend Choo, one of the franchise's core players, to a long-term deal after he hit .300/.394/.489 with 20 homers in his first full MLB season. Given the Indians' small payroll, reaching a long-term agreement with the lefty slugger could be a little more challenging with Boras now on board.

I wonder if him possibly having to serve in the South Korean army has anything to do with this decision.

I was just thinking that myself. Maybe he just wants the money. The Boras money

Is their any other reasons why players employ boras besides $$$$

Very true. Though having an aggressive agent probably would help in him getting out of his military obligations.

He’s not serving in the Korean army. I could be his agent and it wouldn’t make a difference.

I was saying the Tribe should look at trading Choo or even Grady (if he has a great first half)….well, now looks like it could be Choo.

Indians have not been to an arbitration hearing since Reagan was president. That may change next winter….

Wow, for such a good year I sure didn’t hear much about him.

Because he plays for the Indians, not the Yankees. But don’t worry, you will here more about him when his name is buzzing around trade deadline.

Not likely. Maybe this winter, but right now he makes near the league min (less than 500k) so no reason to move him. This winter though he’ll be due for a large raise.

Still think it makes more sense to move Grady if you’re the Indians, but odds are they keep both as neither will be too expensive for a few years still.

Tribe wont move him until 2013 at the earliest unless they are getting something amazing in return, and given that Choo has had only one proven season, I dont think that offer will come. There is no reason for them to move him, because he is one of the pieces they hope they build a contender around.

Disappointing… this is like finding out that a Hollywood actor/actress whom you truly enjoyed watching in their last movie has come out in support of a political candidate… truly sad for sure.

Too bad for Cleveland. He’ll be playing alongside Crawford at Yankee Stadium next year.

I don’t think Crawford will be a Yankee.

He’ll be playing in New York, and the sole reason is because he’s a Boras client? Yeah, that’s totally logical.

If the Yankees sign Crawford, I think it’s more likely that the Red Sox sign Choo as kind of a counterattack, but that’s just my $0.02.

Choo won’t be a FA until 2013, two years later than Crawford. It’s too far off to contemplate the ramifications.

But he said the RS would sign Choo as “a counterattack.”

You realise there are only so many positions on a team and only so much money.
It’s not like the Yankees can sign every top free agent.

Choo’s one of my favorite players, and this is coming from a White Sox fan.
Hopefully he gets the money he deserves.
