Red Sox Managerial Links: Maddux, Martinez

Let's round up some links about the Red Sox's still-ongoing search for Terry Francona's replacement…

  • GM Ben Cherington confirmed that Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job, reports WEEI.com's Alex Speier. Speier says it had to do with family concerns, as Maddux did not want to be so far away from his home in Texas.
  • MLB.com's Peter Gammons says (on Twitter) that Maddux has not yet been to Chicago, where he is also a candidate for the Cubs' managerial position.
  • Cherington confirmed to Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe that the team plans to expand its search, something that was in the works even before Maddux pulled himself out of the running. "Haven’t ruled out internal candidates but [we're] not focused there right now," said the GM.
  • Former Red Sox exec and current Padres GM Josh Byrnes spoke to WEEI.com's Rob Bradford about the process of hiring a new manager. "There are steps," he said. "You lay out the criteria you want with the club, the market, the impact on the players, the impact on the fans and the media and the impact on scouting and development. All the things a manager is going to touch. Then you start calling around, asking opinions you trust, and I think that part is a little underrated."
  • The Tampa Tribute reports (on Twitter) that the Sox have not yet asked the Rays for permission to talk to bench Dave Martinez about their manager's job.

Cafardo On Gonzalez, Rays, Davis, Ortiz

The Cubs and Red Sox are after managers that will take a lot of input from their front offices, writes Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.  In fact, the two teams have quite a bit of overlap on their lists.  Meanwhile, the Cardinals will also be looking for their next skipper and it'll be interesting to see what type of manager they look for.  Cafardo writes that the important thing for the new managers in any of these cities is that they know the ground rules from the start.  Here's more from Cafardo's Sunday column..

  • A's lefty Gio Gonzalez remains a viable trade option for many teams, including the Red Sox and Marlins.  Meanwhile, the Athletics probably aren’t ready to contend.  The club appears to be buying time until they can build a new stadium in the San Jose area.  Until then, they may be in the mode of developing players and dealing them for players who might emerge a few years from now.
  • When all is said and done, the Rays are expected to be willing to deal right-hander Wade Davis this offseason.  A major league source says that while Tampa Bay will listen on James Shields, Davis is the pitcher they will likely end up dealing for an outfielder or a catcher.
  • Free agent David Ortiz seemed upset that the Red Sox did not re-sign him during the exclusivity period, but it made no sense for the club to do so with the veteran's limited options.  While Ortiz wants a three-year deal, the BoSox can wait and survey the market before committing to a multiyear deal for the 36-year-old hitter.
  • Red Sox assistant GM Allard Baird removed himself from the Orioles GM search this week and Cafardo wouldn't be shocked to hear of a new title for him within the Sox organization.
  • Cafardo envisions Tim Bogar winding up with a significant role with either the Cubs or Red Sox.
  • Former Rangers and Red Sox skipper Kevin Kennedy says that he enjoys his broadcast career but he sometimes gets the itch to return to the dugout.  Kennedy says that he would even consider being a bench coach.
  • Larry Bowa, currently working as an analyst for MLB Network, also has aspirations of managing in the majors again.

Manager Notes: Cardinals, Cubs, Red Sox

The Cardinals, Cubs and Red Sox are looking for new managers and there’s considerable overlap between the list of candidates in Chicago and Boston. Here’s the latest managerial news from around MLB…

  • The Cubs will interview Dale Sveum on Monday and Mike Maddux in Wednesday, reports Paul Sullivan of The Chicago Tribune and Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com (Twitter links).
  • Mike Matheny interviewed with the Cardinals today, according to Joe Strauss and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The former Cardinals catcher is now one of St. Louis' minor league instructors. The Cardinals didn't speak with former Red Sox manager Terry Francona today.
  • Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum appears to be the frontrunner for Boston's managerial opening, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Cubs have also received permission to interview Sveum, Rosenthal reports.
  • Though the Cubs and Red Sox are open minded about their candidates, Sveum and Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux appear to be favorites, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter links).
  • The Red Sox will interview Maddux Tuesday and Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. Wednesday, according to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com (on Twitter).
  • Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune takes his readers inside the Cubs’ somewhat unconventional interview process. Candidates make simulated decisions from taped games after being presented with relevant information such as lineup cards, stats and bullpen usage reports.

AL East Notes: Shields, Burnett, Ortiz, Blue Jays

As the Orioles continue to look for a new general manager, let's see what's happening elsewhere in the American League East…

  • The Rays "seem dead-set against trading James Shields," according to CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler (Twitter link).  Knobler said Tampa Bay might be more inclined to deal Jeremy Hellickson than Shields, though he notes it's "very unlikely" that either pitcher is traded.  The Rays exercised Shields' $7.5MM option for 2012 on Monday.
  • Brian Cashman said the Yankees aren't looking to deal A.J. Burnett, reports Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.  Cashman said yesterday that "if [Burnett] is with us, he’s in the rotation," but said today that he made "a bad choice of words."
  • David Ortiz tells WEEI.com's Rob Bradford that the Red Sox didn't make him an offer during the team's five-day exclusive negotiating window with the free agent slugger.  While no offer was made, GM Ben Cherington has spoken to Ortiz's representatives since the season ended.
  • In a conference call with reporters (including MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm), Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said the team wasn't able to counter John McDonald's new two-year contract with the D'Backs due to the Jays' unclear situation at second base and with the utility spot.  McDonald, a long-time fan favorite in Toronto, was expected to rejoin the Jays after being traded to Arizona last summer, but Anthopoulos said there were no hard feelings about McDonald's decision.
  • Anthopoulos noted that the Jays staff gave Tony LaCava a standing ovation when the assistant GM returned to work yesterday.  LaCava turned down the Orioles' offer of their general manager's position in order to stay in Toronto.
  • If the Yankees re-sign Freddy Garcia, Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York thinks Brian Cashman may "call it a winter" in regards to acquiring starting pitching.

Latest On Cubs’ Managerial Search

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein explained in general terms what he’s looking for in his next manager. The person must have “leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level,” Epstein stated yesterday. Here are some specifics on the Cubs’ search, with the most recent updates up top:

  • There's "very little" chance the Cubs hire Francona, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link). He suggests Epstein was merely being polite.
  • Epstein says the Cubs haven't determined whether former Red Sox manager Terry Francona would be a fit in Chicago, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.
  • Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux and Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum are at or near the top of the Cubs’ list, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Sveum interviewed for Boston’s managerial opening and Maddux is another candidate for the Red Sox, according to the Sun-Times. The Cubs and Red Sox have both asked to interview Maddux, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter).
  • Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin will interview with the Cubs, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). Mackanin also interviewed in Boston.
  • Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona and Rays manager Joe Maddon aren’t candidates for the position, according to the Sun-Times. Francona is a candidate in St. Louis, along with Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.

The Red Sox have already interviewed Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin and Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum for their managerial opening and we learned today that Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux will also interview for the position.   • The Red Sox will interview Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

Olney On Orioles, Red Sox, Cubs

The Orioles have a significant perception problem, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. Executives on other teams believe Baltimore’s next general manager will have less power than any other GM in baseball. Here are the details, plus other notes from around MLB:

  • Orioles owner Peter Angelos is less involved in baseball operations than it may seem and manager Buck Showalter would love to work with bright executives, but outside executives don’t see Baltimore as an attractive place to work.
  • Jerry Dipoto and Tony LaCava have turned away the Orioles in favor of other teams and some other highly-regarded assistant GMs have said they wouldn’t be interested if Baltimore called.
  • One executive suggested Showalter should take over as GM and hire a new field manager, according to Olney.
  • Red Sox executive Allard Baird has come up in the Orioles’ GM conversations, according to Olney (on Twitter). Here are the latest details on Baltimore’s search.
  • Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum has a good chance of obtaining his first permanent job as an MLB manager, since the Cubs and Red Sox are both interested in his services. As Olney notes, the Red Sox and Cubs are working from similar managerial lists.

Here are some links from New England while we wait for the Red Sox and Cubs to finally decide on compensation for Theo Epstein…

  • SI.com's Jon Heyman reports (on Twitter) that the Red Sox have not yet asked the Rangers for permission to interview pitching coach Mike Maddux, but he's seen as a likely candidate for their pitching coach job.
  • In another tweet, Heyman says that Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum has a good chance at the Red Sox's and the Cubs' managerial jobs. Sveum served as Boston's third base coach from 2004-2005.
  • In a Twitter chat with fans, GM Ben Cherington confirmed that Sveum will be in for an interview tomorrow. The full chat transcript can be found here.
  • The Red Sox haven't made David Ortiz an offer, according to the Boston Herald. The DH is seeking a three-year deal.
