10 Players Elect Free Agency

By Anthony Franco | October 6, 2025 at 11:41pm CDT

Now that the season is over, we’ll start seeing several players choose to become minor league free agents.  Major League free agents (i.e. players with six-plus years of big league service time) will hit the open market five days after the end of the World Series, but eligible minor leaguers can already start electing free agency.

To qualify, these players must have been all outrighted off their team’s 40-man rosters during the 2025 season without being added back.  These players also must have multiple career outrights on their resume, and/or at least three years of Major League service time.

We’ll offer periodic updates over the coming weeks about many other players hitting the market in this fashion.  These free agent decisions are all listed on the official MLB.com or MILB.com transactions pages, for further reference.

Diamondbacks Designate Nabil Crismatt For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | September 26, 2025 at 4:25pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced that right-hander Bryce Jarvis has been recalled from Triple-A Reno. Fellow righty Nabil Crismatt has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.

Crismatt, 30, was added to Arizona’s roster about six weeks ago. The Snakes have lost a large number of pitchers to the injured list this year and they also traded a couple of arms prior to the trade deadline. Crismatt came aboard and gave the club steady production. He made eight appearances, five of them starts, logging 34 innings in total. He allowed 3.71 earned runs per nine. His 16.3% strikeout rate was subpar but he limited walks to a 6.3% clip and got grounders on 44.3% of balls in play.

Him losing his roster spot is probably more about the circumstances than his performance. Crismatt tossed three innings in yesterday’s 8-0 loss to the Dodgers, tossing 72 pitches in the process. The Snakes are still clinging to faint hopes of a miracle playoff berth, currently two games back of the Mets, who hold the final Wild Card spot. The Reds are in between, one game back of the Mets and one ahead of the Diamondbacks.

Crismatt probably wasn’t going to be available for the final three games of the season, so he’s been bumped off the roster for a fresh arm. He is out of options and therefore had to be removed from the 40-man roster entirely.

For his career, Crismatt now has 211 innings pitched across six separate seasons. In that time, he has a 3.71 ERA, 20.6% strikeout rate, 7% walk rate and 49.2% ground ball rate. He will be on the waiver wire in the coming days but should clear at this late stage of the season. He is technically controllable for three more seasons via arbitration but was settling for minor league deals earlier this year until Arizona brought him up.

If he does pass through waivers unclaimed, he will have the right to elect free agency. If the Diamondbacks manage to make it to the playoffs, perhaps he will accept an outright assignment and wait to see if his arm is needed in October. If they don’t make it, he could get a bit of a headstart on his offseason.

Diamondbacks Select Nabil Crismatt

By Nick Deeds | August 17, 2025 at 10:20am CDT

The Diamondbacks announced this morning that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Nabil Crismatt. In a corresponding move, right-hander Casey Kelly was optioned to Triple-A. Arizona had a 40-man roster already vacancy for Crismatt to fill, and their roster now stands at 40.

Crismatt, 30, was signed by the Mets out of Colombia and made his professional debut back in 2012. He made his big league debut as a Cardinal in 2020, when he pitched to a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings of work. Despite that solid first showing, he was outrighted off the club’s roster following the 2020 season. That led him to sign a minor league contract with the Padres, for whom he would have plenty of success over the next two seasons. The righty posted a 3.39 ERA with a 3.76 FIP over 148 2/3 innings of work from 2021-22 while striking out 21.6% of his opponents.

It was a solid showing, but since then he’s been limited to just 13 games in the majors between the Padres, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers. He struggled in those games, with a 6.30 ERA and 5.22 FIP in 20 innings of work. He’s mostly been relegated to the minors since 2023 and spent most of last year in the Rangers organization before signing with the Phillies on a minor league deal this past offseason. Philadelphia stretched Crismatt out to start at Triple-A, and he posted a decent 4.04 ERA in 100 1/3 innings of work for the club. He opted out of his minor league deal with the Phillies once, but re-signed after not finding a more lucrative deal elsewhere.

He was released earlier this month by the Phillies, however, and found himself scooped up by Arizona shortly thereafter. He made one scoreless, two-inning appearance with the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate in Reno and is now slated to join the club’s roster, where he can help round out the pitching staff after the club dealt away a number of pieces at last month’s trade deadline. Crismatt figures to serve as a multi-inning reliever for the Diamondbacks going forward, and a strong showing down the stretch could help him find a big league role for the 2026 season if he can prove to have the same level of effectiveness he flashed with the Padres a few years ago.

Diamondbacks Sign Nabil Crismatt To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | August 9, 2025 at 10:31pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Nabil Crismatt to a minor league deal, per an announcement from the Triple-A Reno Aces. Crismatt was previously with the Phillies on a minor league deal but was released a few days ago, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com.

Crismatt, 30, has pitched 177 major league innings in his career with a 3.71 earned run average. His 21.5% strikeout rate is a bit south of average but his 7.2% walk rate and 50.3% ground ball rate are both solid figures. That includes a brief stint with the Diamondbacks in 2023, when he tossed two scoreless innings in his lone appearance as a Snake.

This year, he’s been stuck in the minors with the Phillies. He’s been working as a starter in Triple-A, making 19 starts with a 4.04 ERA, 16.2% strikeout rate, 6.2% walk rate and 40% ground ball rate.

The Diamondbacks have been hemorrhaging pitching this year. They have lost Corbin Burnes, A.J. Puk, Justin Martínez, Tommy Henry and Blake Walston to Tommy John surgeries. Additionally, Cristian Mena, Christian Montes De Oca, Ryan Thompson and Kevin Ginkel are on the injured list due to other reasons. Those injuries played a notable role in knocking the Diamondbacks out of contention, which led them to trading Merrill Kelly and Shelby Miller ahead of the deadline.

Given all of those fallen soldiers, the club may have some innings available down the stretch. Crismatt has worked both as a starter and a reliever in his career. He’ll give the Diamondbacks a depth arm for now but could perhaps be useful for the big league club as they play out the string on the season.

Phillies Re-Sign Nabil Crismatt To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | July 7, 2025 at 4:30pm CDT

The Phillies have re-signed right-hander Nabil Crismatt, according to Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com. The veteran righty opted out of a separate minor league pact with the Phillies a few days ago.

Crismatt, 30, has been a reliever for much of his minor league career but the Phils have been utilizing him as a starter this year. He made 15 Triple-A starts before opting out of his deal last week, logging 80 1/3 innings with a 3.81 earned run average. He only struck out 16.3% of batters faced but limited walks to a 5.1% clip. His 39.2% ground ball rate was close to par.

Despite those generally solid results, the Phils haven’t needed him at the big league level. Their rotation is one of the best in the big leagues. Zack Wheeler, Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sánchez have been there all year. Ranger Suárez spent about the first month of the season on the injured list but has been healthy for over two months now. Aaron Nola has been on the IL for a while but Taijuan Walker and Mick Abel have gotten the chances to take that spot.

Crismatt decided to see what other opportunities were available to him but has circled back to the Phils. On the one hand, he gets the consistency of staying with the club he’s been with all year, but his path to the big leagues remains blocked. Even if another injury or two develops, the Phils could look to make deadline acquisitions and they also have prospect Andrew Painter making Triple-A starts. Coming up and taking a relief role is perhaps possible but the Phils seems likely to bolster the relief corps at the deadline.

Regardless, Crismatt will presumably do his best for the IronPigs and see what happens. He has thrown 177 big league innings over the previous five seasons with a 3.71 ERA, 21.5% strikeout rate, 7.2% walk rate and 50.3% ground ball rate.

Nabil Crismatt Opts Out Of Phillies Deal

By Steve Adams | July 3, 2025 at 2:37pm CDT

Right-hander Nabil Crismatt triggered an opt-out in his minor league deal with the Phillies and has been granted his release, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. He’s now a free agent who can sign with any club.

Crismatt, 30, has pitched in parts of five major league seasons between the Padres, Cardinals, D-backs and Dodgers. He’s worked almost exclusively as a reliever, logging a 3.71 ERA with a 21.5% strikeout rate, a 7.2% walk rate and a 50.3% ground-ball rate in 177 big league innings.

It’s a nice track record out of the ’pen, but the Phillies opted to stretch Crismatt out and deploy him out of the rotation in Triple-A. He’s spent about half his time in parts of seven Triple-A seasons in that role. Crismatt has pitched well in 15 starts with the Phillies’ top affiliate in Lehigh Valley, recording a 3.81 ERA in 80 1/3 innings. His 16.3% strikeout rate and 88.1 mph average fastball are well below average, but he’s only allowed a 5.1% walk rate.

Crismatt doesn’t have a dominant major league track record, but he’s pitched well in low-leverage settings and regularly avoided hard contact. He’s been particularly sharp of late in Triple-A, pitching to a 3.12 ERA and walking only two batters over his past 26 innings. Teams in search of depth in the rotation or some length in the bullpen could take a low-cost look at the well-traveled righty.

Phillies Sign Guillo Zuniga, Nabil Crismatt To Minor League Deals

By Anthony Franco | December 27, 2024 at 7:13pm CDT

The Phillies signed relievers Nabil Crismatt and Guillo Zuñiga to minor league contracts earlier this month. Both deals are reflected on the team’s transaction log at MLB.com and the players’ respective social media accounts.

Both pitchers logged limited major league action in 2024. Crismatt, who turned 30 on Wednesday, made five appearances for the Dodgers early in the year. He spent the remainder of the season in Triple-A, which he divided between three organizations. Crismatt pitched in the minors between Los Angeles, San Diego and Texas. He had a tough showing in the Pacific Coast League, allowing 5.81 earned runs per nine through 79 innings. Crismatt struck out a slightly below-average 20.7% of batters faced against a decent 7.5% walk rate.

The Colombian-born hurler has struggled over six Triple-A seasons. His major league track record is quite a bit better. Crismatt owns a 3.71 earned run average through parts of five MLB campaigns. Most of that production came during a strong two-year run in San Diego between 2021-22. He has logged 20 major league innings over the past two seasons.

Zuñiga, 26, debuted with two appearances for the Cardinals in 2023. St. Louis dealt him to the Angels in a cash deal in February. Zuñiga made 15 appearances for the Halos. He tossed 17 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs with 12 strikeouts and eight walks. Zuñiga pitched 26 innings at the Triple-A level, where he turned in a 5.19 ERA with a well below-average 14.3% strikeout rate. The Angels designated him for assignment when they acquired Travis d’Arnaud and released him a few days later.

This year’s drop in strikeouts marked a bizarre change from the bulk of Zuñiga’s minor league career. He’d fanned a quarter of batters faced over 29 appearances in Triple-A during the ’23 season. His strikeout rate frequently pushed 30% during his time in the low minors. Zuñiga averaged 97 MPH with his four-seam fastball this year and sat just under 99 MPH during his limited MLB stint with the Cardinals in 2023.

Padres Sign Nabil Crismatt To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | June 28, 2024 at 1:37pm CDT

Right-hander Nabil Crismatt is headed back to the Padres organization, the pitcher himself announced via Instagram. Crismatt, who was released from a minor league deal with the Rangers earlier this week, signed a minor league contract with San Diego, reports Annie Helibrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The 29-year-old Crismatt has logged 177 innings across parts of five MLB seasons with four different teams — but the vast majority of that work (159 2/3 innings) has come as a member of the Padres. He suited up for San Diego from 2021-23 and logged a combined 3.83 ERA with a 21.1% strikeout rate, 7.7% walk rate and six holds in that time. Crismatt made his big league debut with the 2020 Cardinals and has also pitched for the D-backs and Dodgers since leaving San Diego (in addition to this year’s Triple-A stint with Texas’ top affiliate).

The Dodgers signed Crismatt to a minor league deal over the winter and gave him seven innings of work in the big leagues early this season. He allowed a pair of runs on seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts in that L.A. cameo but was nevertheless designated for assignment and passed through waivers. He opted for free agency, signed a minor league pact with the Rangers in late May, and spent about a month with their Round Rock affiliate.

Crismatt has been tagged for a 6.46 ERA in 23 2/3 Triple-A frames between the Dodgers and Rangers this season, though he sports a much stronger K-BB profile than that mark would suggest: a 23.4% strikeout rate and tiny 3.8% walk rate. He’s been plagued by a BABIP near .400 between those two stops, which has helped to inflate his earned run average.

For now, Crismatt will head to El Paso to serve as a depth option for the Friars. But given their familiarity with the right-hander and his solid big league track record — a 3.71 ERA overall in his 177 MLB innings with solid strikeout and walk rates — it wouldn’t be a surprise if he got a look in the majors at some point in the relatively near future.

Rangers Sign Nabil Crismatt To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | May 22, 2024 at 10:32am CDT

The Rangers have signed right-hander Nabil Crismatt to a minor league deal, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on X. The righty will report to Triple-A Round Rock in the coming days.

Crismatt, 29, returned to free agency earlier this week. He has bounced on and off the Dodgers’ roster a couple of times this year. He signed a minor league deal with that club in the winter and was added to the roster in late March. He pitched in one game before being designated for assignment and accepting an outright. He was selected again in late April and made four more appearances before losing his roster spot yet again.

Around those transactions, the results in his small sample of work have been decent. Crismatt has allowed two earned runs in seven major league innings so far this year, striking out six opponents without issuing a walk. His 12 2/3 Triple-A innings this year have produced a 5.68 ERA, though with some positive signs. He has struck out 28.8% of batters at that level with no walks given out. The high ERA is on account of three home runs surrendered, a 55.6% strand rate and .353 batting average on balls in play.

He had a frustrating 2023 season but was in good form in the two seasons prior to that. Last year, a hip strain cost him a couple of months of the season and he struggled when on the mound. He had an 8.31 ERA in 13 MLB innings as well as a 6.86 ERA in 59 Triple-A innings.

He spent 2021 and 2022 as a long reliever with the Padres. He threw 148 2/3 innings over 95 appearances with a 3.39 ERA. His 21.6% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate were close to average but he got ground balls at a strong clip of 50.6%.

The Dodgers frequently churn players through the final spots of their bullpen, which has put Crismatt on the transaction logs a few times. This time, he’ll switch organizations and see if he can carve out a role in Arlington. The Rangers currently have ten pitchers on the injured list, though Dane Dunning is expected to come off the IL and start today’s game. That will still leave them with Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, Nathan Eovaldi, Brock Burke, Carson Coleman, Austin Pruitt and Josh Sborz on the shelf.

Crismatt has some decent numbers this year and also has the impressive track record during his time with the Padres. If the Rangers need a fresh arm at some point in the coming weeks, perhaps Crismatt will get the call. If he does so, he’s out of options but also has less than three years of major league service time, meaning he could be retained beyond this season if he holds a roster spot at the end of the year.

Nabil Crismatt Elects Free Agency

By Anthony Franco | May 20, 2024 at 9:06pm CDT

Reliever Nabil Crismatt elected free agency over the weekend after going unclaimed on waivers, according to the transaction log at MLB.com. The Dodgers had designated the right-hander for assignment last week when they selected Elieser Hernández onto the big league roster.

Crismatt had two brief stays on the Los Angeles roster. The Colombian-born righty inked a minor league deal in December and was twice selected onto the MLB team. He tossed seven innings of low-leverage relief through five appearances. Crismatt allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He struck out six and didn’t issue a walk. Between his MLB stints, he tossed 12 2/3 frames over four appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City. While Crismatt allowed eight earned runs on three homers in the Pacific Coast League, he fanned 15 without walking anyone.

The 29-year-old is looking to reestablish himself as a valuable long reliever in a major league bullpen. Crismatt played that role for the Padres very effectively between 2021-22, combining for a 3.39 ERA across 148 2/3 innings. He was hit hard over 13 MLB frames with San Diego and the Diamondbacks last season, leading him to clear waivers a few times over the past calendar year.

Crismatt should be able to land a minor league deal in the coming days. While he doesn’t throw hard, his command and ability to work multiple innings make him a solid non-roster relief option.
