Yanks Make Offer To Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 5:13pm CDT

5:13pm: Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News says the offer is for six years and $140MM.

4:37pm: Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger says the Yankees made their initial offer to Sabathia, but they expect his agents to look around a bit.

1:14pm: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Yankees will also make offers to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe within the next day or two.

FRIDAY, 10:27am: ESPN’s Buster Olney says this initial Yankees offer will be in the $140-142MM range.  By the way, the Giants have already touched base with Sabathia’s agents.

THURSDAY: According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees will "aggressively extend a proposal" to C.C. Sabathia tomorrow.  He believes the Yankees will go to "a financial region that no other franchise would even consider" to lure the ace.  Sherman’s guess is an initial bid in the six-year, $150MM range (and that may not be the final offer).

If the Yankees are successful in signing Sabathia, they hope to add A.J. Burnett or Derek Lowe next.

Burnett, Braves Have Mutual Interest

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 1:47pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, the Braves and A.J. Burnett have mutual interest.  Preliminary talks have taken place.  Burnett’s agent, Darek Braunecker, downplayed the idea that Burnett strongly desires to play closer to home.  The Braves also like Derek Lowe and Ryan Dempster.  They could try to sign two of the three if a Jake Peavy deal cannot be hammered out.

Burnett has a four-year, $54MM offer from the Blue Jays to shop around.  The Yankees should make an offer soon.

Jays’ Plans Start With Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 10:09am CDT

According to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star, the Blue Jays have a four-year, $54MM offer ready for A.J. Burnett.  They’ll apparently leave that proposal out there, let Burnett shop it around, and wait until the situation is resolved before moving on to other free agent pitchers.  Surely Burnett can top $13.5MM a year.

Griffin says Ryan Dempster (Canadian!) and Derek Lowe could be targets if Burnett signs elsewhere, assuming they are still on the market.  Jeff Blair wrote yesterday that Brad Penny is also on the radar.

Odds and Ends: Holliday, Takahashi, Lincecum

By Tim Dierkes | November 12, 2008 at 4:00pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Richard Justice says the Astros should offer Andy Pettitte $7-8MM to come back.
  • Joe Christensen doesn’t see Huston Street landing in Minnesota.
  • Larry Beinfest dismissed a "cyberspace rumor" that the Marlins are planning a run at Manny Ramirez.
  • Gordon Wittenmyer says the Cubs could fit both Jake Peavy and Ryan Dempster into the payroll, and that the Peavy situation will be resolved first.
  • Today is the deadline for MLB.com’s Free Agent Frenzy.  You have until 4pm CST to submit your picks for 15 free agents.  Here are my predictions from November 3rd…I would change the Furcal and Sheets ones for starters.
  • Who had the Matt Holliday scoop?  SI.com’s Jon Heyman broke the story, while Yahoo’s Tim Brown was the first to name the players involved.
  • Holliday figures to be a three to six month rental for the A’s.  Over at FanGraphs, Dave Cameron takes a closer look at Carlos Gonzalez and Greg Smith.  ESPN’s Keith Law says the Rockies received a "fair return" for Holliday.
  • Athletics Nation suggests the A’s sign Derek Lowe.
  • Ken Davidoff looks at the Yankees’ seesawing philosophy.
  • Japanese southpaw Ken Takahashi intends to sign with an MLB club, and the Mets may be interested.  Nikkan Sports says the Cubs, Padres, and Giants are also in on him.
  • River Ave. Blues looks ahead to Derek Jeter’s next contract.
  • Andrew Baggarly reminds us that Tim Lincecum intends to go year to year.
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney talked to one GM who expects "a whole lot of bargains" in late January, given the nation’s economy.
  • Rany Jazayerli didn’t like the Royals’ acquisition of Mike Jacobs, but doesn’t think it’s the end of the world.
  • Braves GM Frank Wren on Jeff Francoeur: "We haven’t talked about him at all.  It’s not to say that we wouldn’t."

Red Sox Inquire On Lowe

By Tim Dierkes | November 12, 2008 at 3:37pm CDT

According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have inquired on free agent starter on Derek Lowe.  Scott Boras even gave them one of his infamous books hyping the 35 year-old righty.  Massarotti figures the Red Sox consider Lowe a safer bet than A.J. Burnett or Ben Sheets.

Massarotti adds that the Red Sox are looking for groundballing strike throwers in terms of bullpen additions.  He wonders if Doug Brocail or Brandon Lyon could work.  I noticed that Brian Shouse, Todd Coffey, Dennys Reyes, and Jeremy Affeldt also fit the profile, for what it’s worth.

Odds and Ends: Pettitte, Zaun, Blanco

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 5:00pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Scott Bordow feels the D’Backs and Randy Johnson should meet at $5MM, which still seems light.
  • David Murphy explains why the Phillies make more sense than the Mariners for Jamie Moyer, geographically.
  • David Ortiz would like the Red Sox to add a 30 home run bat.
  • Richard Justice wants the Astros to sign both Randy Wolf and Andy Pettitte.  He says the Cubs and Cardinals will be talking to Pettitte even though his heart is with the Yankees.
  • El Lefty Malo recommends the Giants sign Derek Lowe.  The Giants are at least considering the big-ticket free agents.
  • Jeff Blair runs through a few options for the Blue Jays if A.J. Burnett leaves.
  • Free agent catcher Gregg Zaun is not pleased with Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi.
  • The D’Backs want Miguel Montero showcased as a catcher.
  • Ken Davidoff has a list of nine intriguing (and older) free agents.
  • Joel Sherman joins Buster Olney in saying Brian Giles vetoed a trade to the A’s in August, after the Red Sox won the claim and failed to make a deal.  How is this possible?
  • Geovany Soto expects Henry Blanco to re-sign with the Cubs.
  • Tony Massarotti looks at possible trade partners for the Red Sox.

Perrotto’s Latest: Free Agent Predictions

By Steve Adams | November 9, 2008 at 2:35pm CDT

John Perrotto has his Every Given Sunday column up over at Baseball Prospectus. Perrotto offers a list of some educated guesses as to where some of the top free agents in baseball will land, with some surprises here and there. Let’s take a look:

  • Perrotto lists the Yankees loading up on starting pitching, landing C.C. Sabathia and Derek Lowe, while the Dodgers land Manny Ramirez after doubling their initial offer to four years, $100MM.
  • Perrotto says the Nationals will land Mark Teixeira, as they could be prepared to offer Teixeira – a Maryland native – ten years, $200MM. Turning down that kind of money would certainly be difficult.
  • Perrotto has Adam Dunn landing on the North Side of Chicago and having an adventurous time in right field for the Cubs. According to these predictions, he’ll be joined by Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood – neither of whom are going anywhere.
  • Perrotto feel Andy Pettitte won’t be back with the Yankees, and feels that he will either take a below-market contract from his hometown Astros or retire. He also pegs Mike Mussina to likely retire, but agrees he’ll be back with the Yankees if he does indeed make a run at 300 wins.
  • Other predictions from Perrotto: Raul Ibanez  and Francisco Rodriguez to the Mets, Milton Bradley to Toronto, Orlando Cabrera to Minnesota, Casey Blake back to Cleveland, A.J. Burnett to the Orioles, Brian Fuentes to the Angels, Nick Punto to St. Louis, Randy Johnson to the Angels, Jason Giambi to Oakland, and Orlando Hudson to the Mets.
  • The list of players who will end up back with their current teams: Ben Sheets, Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer, and Jason Varitek, on a two-year $20MM contract, courtesy of Scott Boras.

Red Sox Rumors: Crisp, Lugo, Burnett, Baldelli

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 12:11pm CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has the latest on the Red Sox.

  • GM Theo Epstein says there’s one deal he might be able to do before the winter meetings, possibly involving Coco Crisp or Julio Lugo.  The free agent market for center fielders and shortstops is weak this year.
  • Cafardo doesn’t believe the Sox are in on C.C. Sabathia or A.J. Burnett, and he says they’re unsure about Derek Lowe.  However, Buster Olney says "there is an expectation within other quarters of the AL East that the Red Sox will get in on the Burnett bidding."  Cafardo does see Boston adding a starter of some kind, possibly a Japanese free agent.
  • Catchers on Epstein’s radar to varying degrees: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden, Jeff Clement, Bengie Molina, and Ivan Rodriguez.
  • Cafardo says the Red Sox are "more than intrigued" by Rocco Baldelli, who could fill their fourth outfielder role if and when Mark Kotsay leaves.
  • Tony Massarotti discusses Mark Teixeira in-depth at his blog.

Mets Rumors: Fuentes, Cordero, Delgado

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:18pm CDT

5:18pm: More on the Mets: Ken Davidoff says they’re shopping Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, and Pedro Feliciano.  The A’s, Rays, and Rangers are fans of Heilman.  The Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, and D’Backs were also tossed into the mix by Adam Rubin, though the D’Backs haven’t had recent talks.   The Mets would be willing to pick up some of the $3.6MM owed to Schoeneweis next year.

4:58pm: Brian Fuentes’ agent Rick Thurman calls the below rumor of an offer to the Mets a "total fabrication."

10:56am: Checking in on the Mets…

  • Tracy Ringolsby says Brian Fuentes’ agents proposed a four-year, $44MM deal to the Mets.  Ringolsby heard the Indians and Cardinals don’t want to go beyond two years.  The Mets also met with Francisco Rodriguez’s agent.
  • The Mets are considering free agent Chad Cordero, who is coming off July shoulder surgery.
  • GM Omar Minaya seems willing to spend big money on a closer and one starter, and then fill the other starting spot cheaply.  The Mets could, say, sign Derek Lowe and trade for the affordable Edwin Jackson.  The Mets haven’t exchanged names yet for Jackson.
  • Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland may be on the radar, as Minaya met with their agent yesterday.  Dempster’s agent said he can handle New York.
  • Carlos Delgado approached the Mets late in the season about an extension for 2010, but they decided to pass.  Delgado wasn’t bothered by this.
  • Ken Davidoff adds that the Mets have let scout/former Bulls GM Jerry Krause go.

Yankees Rumors: Cameron, Melky, Pettitte, Lowe

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:06pm CDT

5:06pm: More on the Cameron situation: Ken Davidoff says Cabrera and Ian Kennedy have been discussed.  However, the Brewers will probably wait to see if they can sign Sabathia, since he’s good friends with Cameron.

10:26am: The latest Yankees hot stove buzz…

  • According to Joel Sherman and George King of the New York Post, the Yankees inquired with the Brewers on Mike Cameron.  The Yanks would be willing to send Melky Cabrera and pitching to Milwaukee.  The Yankees are also talking to other teams about Wilson Betemit.
  • The Yankees are only willing to do a one-year deal for Andy Pettitte, who has said he wants to return.  The Yanks plan to see what Mike Mussina wants to do first.  It seems they’ll bring back one of Mussina/Pettitte and sign two free agent starters out of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe.
  • For Lowe, the Yankees might have to butt heads with the Mets.  Scott Boras has already discussed Lowe with both clubs.  Peter Abraham thinks the Yankees and Mets could also compete for Oliver Perez or Burnett if Sabathia signs elsewhere.
  • Ken Davidoff is not buying the Hideki Matsui three-team trade scenario.
