Jamie Moyer

Odds and Ends: Pettitte, Zaun, Blanco

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 5:00pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Scott Bordow feels the D’Backs and Randy Johnson should meet at $5MM, which still seems light.
  • David Murphy explains why the Phillies make more sense than the Mariners for Jamie Moyer, geographically.
  • David Ortiz would like the Red Sox to add a 30 home run bat.
  • Richard Justice wants the Astros to sign both Randy Wolf and Andy Pettitte.  He says the Cubs and Cardinals will be talking to Pettitte even though his heart is with the Yankees.
  • El Lefty Malo recommends the Giants sign Derek Lowe.  The Giants are at least considering the big-ticket free agents.
  • Jeff Blair runs through a few options for the Blue Jays if A.J. Burnett leaves.
  • Free agent catcher Gregg Zaun is not pleased with Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi.
  • The D’Backs want Miguel Montero showcased as a catcher.
  • Ken Davidoff has a list of nine intriguing (and older) free agents.
  • Joel Sherman joins Buster Olney in saying Brian Giles vetoed a trade to the A’s in August, after the Red Sox won the claim and failed to make a deal.  How is this possible?
  • Geovany Soto expects Henry Blanco to re-sign with the Cubs.
  • Tony Massarotti looks at possible trade partners for the Red Sox.

Perrotto’s Latest: Free Agent Predictions

By Steve Adams | November 9, 2008 at 2:35pm CDT

John Perrotto has his Every Given Sunday column up over at Baseball Prospectus. Perrotto offers a list of some educated guesses as to where some of the top free agents in baseball will land, with some surprises here and there. Let’s take a look:

  • Perrotto lists the Yankees loading up on starting pitching, landing C.C. Sabathia and Derek Lowe, while the Dodgers land Manny Ramirez after doubling their initial offer to four years, $100MM.
  • Perrotto says the Nationals will land Mark Teixeira, as they could be prepared to offer Teixeira – a Maryland native – ten years, $200MM. Turning down that kind of money would certainly be difficult.
  • Perrotto has Adam Dunn landing on the North Side of Chicago and having an adventurous time in right field for the Cubs. According to these predictions, he’ll be joined by Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood – neither of whom are going anywhere.
  • Perrotto feel Andy Pettitte won’t be back with the Yankees, and feels that he will either take a below-market contract from his hometown Astros or retire. He also pegs Mike Mussina to likely retire, but agrees he’ll be back with the Yankees if he does indeed make a run at 300 wins.
  • Other predictions from Perrotto: Raul Ibanez  and Francisco Rodriguez to the Mets, Milton Bradley to Toronto, Orlando Cabrera to Minnesota, Casey Blake back to Cleveland, A.J. Burnett to the Orioles, Brian Fuentes to the Angels, Nick Punto to St. Louis, Randy Johnson to the Angels, Jason Giambi to Oakland, and Orlando Hudson to the Mets.
  • The list of players who will end up back with their current teams: Ben Sheets, Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer, and Jason Varitek, on a two-year $20MM contract, courtesy of Scott Boras.

Phillies Rumors: Baldelli, Hairston, Mench

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:48pm CDT

5:44pm: MLB.com’s Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don’t re-sign Burrell.  The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon.  Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston’s agent, and feels he made progress.  And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan.

9:38am: Checkin’ in on the Phillies…

  • GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton.
  • Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer, and Scott Eyre.  Conversations will begin soon with Moyer and Eyre.
  • Curt Schilling would be open to returning to the Phillies if he pitches next year.  Amaro says he hasn’t even considered the possibility yet.  He would make a nice fifth starter if they can re-sign Moyer.
  • The Phillies control setup man Ryan Madson through 2009, but he’s represented by Scott Boras.  Boras compared Madson to Mariano Rivera circa 1996, so don’t look for an affordable long-term deal.
  • Amaro talked to at least 27 other GMs at the meetings.
  • No word yet from the Philly writers on Andrew Baggarly’s rumor that the Phils will listen on Jimmy Rollins.

Phillies Rumors: Burrell, Moyer, Howard

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 11:58am CDT

Let’s round up the Phillies links.  By the way, I am hoping to get to their Offseason Outlook on Friday.

  • The first issue is Pat Burrell, to whom the Phillies will probably make a two-year offer (according to Buster Olney).  It is true that Burrell added a Philly-based agent (Ed Hayes), but he’s also keeping Greg Genske.  The confusion with agents is one reason negotiations haven’t begun with the Phils.  Burrell would love to return.  If he doesn’t re-sign, the Giants may be interested.  Keep in mind that Burrell does not want to DH.
  • If Burrell leaves, the Phillies hope to add a righthanded hitter to replace him.  Magglio Ordonez, Matt Holliday, and Manny Ramirez are considered long shots.  Milton Bradley would be interesting, if the Phillies believe he can play the field every day.  It’d also make sense for the Phillies to inquire on Ryan Ludwick, Jermaine Dye, Josh Willingham, Casey Blake, and Mark DeRosa.
  • The Phillies have had one brief conversation with Jamie Moyer’s agent.  Moyer wants a multiyear deal, but Olney does not believe the Phils are inclined to do that.
  • Scott Eyre would take a one-year contract to stay, and the Phillies hope to re-sign him before November 14th.
  • Olney says the Phillies are expected to explore talks with Ryan Howard’s agent regarding a long-term deal.
  • Don’t forget starting pitching; Scott Lauber figures they’ll be in the market.
  • Outfielder So Taguchi was released today.

Phillies’ Offseason Agenda

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 11:13am CDT

12:47pm: Scott Lauber has the latest from the Amaro press conference.

  • Manny Ramirez seems unlikely as a left field solution.  Execs surveyed by Jerry Crasnick felt the same.
  • Burrell switched to a Philly-based agent, and talks will begin soon with the Phillies.
  • Pat Gillick will remain with the Phillies as a paid consultant.

11:13am: The Phillies locked up Ruben Amaro Jr. as their GM through 2011.  Items on his to-do list:

  • Left fielder Pat Burrell could be back if he accepts a two-year deal.  Otherwise, the Phils will kick the tires on Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, and Magglio Ordonez.  Jim Salisbury also notes that the Phillies have long liked Rocco Baldelli.  They’ve also been linked to Garrett Atkins.
  • Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard are in for large raises through arbitration; Amaro may attempt to sign them long-term.
  • Salisbury sees free agent lefties Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre re-signing.  Scott Lauber suggests the Phils don’t want to go beyond one year for Moyer, though.
  • The team had a $104MM payroll in ’08, and that is expected to increase.
  • The Phillies (along with the Tigers and Nationals) have interest in free agent utility man Pete Orr.

Moyer Wants To Stay With Phillies

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2008 at 10:00am CDT

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Todd Zolecki, Jamie Moyer wants to help the Phillies defend their title next year.

Moyer said that he hasn’t spoken with the Phillies about returning, but he’s optimistic about his chances of playing in Philadelphia in 2009. The Phillies have a core of Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, and Joe Blanton under control for ’09.

This year, Moyer had an ERA of 3.71 in nearly 200 regular season innings before pitching well in the World Series.

Odds and Ends: Phillies and Rays

By Sarah Green | October 25, 2008 at 4:44pm CDT

A few notes regarding the Phillies and the Rays, since this is all anyone is talking about today:

  • Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that arbitration-eligible Ryan Madson could be in for a nice raise this winter.
  • The Biz of Baseball ranked all 30 teams by marginal payroll/marginal win. I’ll let them explain the mathematical details, but unsurprisingly, the Rays win by a healthy margin.
  • Howard Bryant discusses Carlos Pena’s success with Tampa and how he resisted requests to change his hitting approach while he was struggling with Texas, Oakland, Detroit, New York, and Boston.
  • A lot of writers published stories today on tonight’s scheduled starter for Philadelphia, Jamie Moyer, but  Amalie Benajmin in the Boston Globe does an especially nice job following his long, circuitous career.
  • And finally, this headline appeared in today’s Newsday: Mets Deeply Regret Letting Kazmir Go To Rays.

Sarah Green writes for Umpbump.com and the Boston Metro.

Heyman’s Latest: Yankees, K-Rod, Moyer

By Tim Dierkes | October 8, 2008 at 11:46am CDT

Notes from SI.com’s Jon Heyman…

  • The Yankees apparently want to sign two free agent starters out of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe.  If Sabathia is one of them they’d be looking at a total outlay of $200MM or more.  Ken Davidoff of Newsday notes that Sabathia might feel pressure from the players union to take the highest offer.
  • Heyman believes the nation’s struggling economy might temper spending, but not in the Yankees’ case.
  • Heyman doesn’t see the Angels as terribly gung-ho about retaining closer Francisco Rodriguez.
  • People close to Jamie Moyer say he wants to pitch until he’s 50.  Moyer didn’t rule it out when asked in August.

Phillies Payroll Situation

By Tim Dierkes | September 22, 2008 at 12:14pm CDT

We’ll get into this more when we do an offseason outlook for the Phillies in a few weeks.  But Jim Salisbury’s column on the team’s ’09 payroll commitments deserves an early look.

Salisbury computes that the Phillies will have over $100MM committed just to retain current under-contract and arb-eligible players.  Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, and others will receive large raises.

Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrell are free agents.  Moyer seems likely to re-sign for $8-10MM, but Burrell is a question mark.  The Phillies don’t like the idea of giving Burrell a third year, which he could easily find on the open market.

Burrell may leave, but Salisbury doesn’t see the Phillies bringing in Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, Raul Ibanez, or Milton Bradley to replace him for various reasons.  Magglio Ordonez might be available, but he’s basically under contract for three years at $48MM.  And the Phils would have to send useful players to Detroit.  More affordable options the Phillies can consider include Casey Blake and Juan Rivera.

Salisbury also says the Phillies need to add a setup man this winter.  With Brian Fuentes intent on closing, they’ll need to dig through a lesser tier of free agent relievers.

Odds and Ends: Burnett, Inoa, Minaya, Glavine

By Tim Dierkes | August 27, 2008 at 10:51am CDT

Today’s links…

  • Pablo Ozuna…designated for assignment again.  Additionally, the Phillies cut Andy Tracy.  The 34 year-old hit .288/.377/.516 in Triple A this year.
  • Eddie Bajek added AL infielders to his Elias rankings.  Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria are Type As, while Mark Ellis and Mark Grudzielanek are Type Bs.  Cabrera could net the Sox some picks.
  • The Phillies would like to bring Jamie Moyer back next year, but so far they’ve only had informal talks.  Earlier this month Moyer spoke of an obligation with the Phillies, but he is not under contract for ’09.  The Phillies have also had informal talks with Pat Burrell, who’s said he wants to stay.
  • Richard Griffin discusses A.J. Burnett quite a bit in his mailbag, suggesting this is the pitcher’s best season because of his career-high win total.
  • Athletics Nation talks to A’s owner Lewis Wolff about the Michael Inoa signing.
  • Omar Minaya’s job is secure.
  • Aaron Harang has suggestions for the Reds to make their ballpark more pitcher-friendly.
  • Tom Glavine is feeling good after somewhat minor elbow surgery, but isn’t sure about playing in ’09.  Ken Rosenthal wrote recently that Glavine wants to pitch next year.
  • Grant at McCovey Chronicles gives his take on pitch counts.
