Impacto Deportivo Manny Report

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2008 at 5:02pm CDT

5:02pm: Hal Steinbrenner denies the report as well, says Kat O’Brien.  She says no offer is on the table for Manny.  Interestingly, O’Brien said she’s heard the names Pat Burrell and Jason Giambi mentioned for the Yankees.

3:34pm: Impactivo Deportivo sticks to its guns despite the Cashman denial.

MONDAY, 8:27am: MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch asked Yankees GM Brian Cashman about this report.  Cashman responded: "Not true."

SUNDAY, 10:53pm: According to a report in the Dominican newspaper Impacto Deportivo, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez to a three-year, $75MM deal.  The report says negotiations are advanced and an announcement would take place Monday or Tuesday.  If true, this would be an incredible scoop.  However, there is reason for skepticism.  The money and timing just don’t seem right.

A look at Impacto Deportivo’s recent history:

  • 11/24/08: Reported the Braves as the mystery team in on Rafael Furcal, offering four years and $52MM.  The offer was inaccurate, but they did nail the mystery team.
  • 11/12/08: Correctly scooped the Damaso Marte signing.
  • 2/21/08: Incorrectly indicated the White Sox reached an agreement with Bartolo Colon.  Also incorrect on a similar rumor involving the Royals.
  • 1/21/08: Correctly scooped the Octavio Dotel signing.
  • 11/18/07: Correctly scooped the Luis Castillo signing.

How Will The Angels Spend Their Money?

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2008 at 12:02pm CDT

12:02pm: Boras gave a prepared statement regarding the Angels and Tex, saying that the player’s interest has been sincere.  Boras left the door open for the Angels, but why wouldn’t he?

11:28am: So the Angels are out of the running for Mark Teixeira.  Now what?  They’ve re-signed Juan Rivera, making Manny Ramirez a "reach" according to Jerry Crasnick’s source.  Mike DiGiovanna has suggestions:

The Angels…could also look to bolster their offense by pursuing a free-agent outfielder such as Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn, or, possibly, Manny.  Or, they could look to trade for a hitter such as Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko, Garrett Atkins or Joey Votto.  They will probably use some of the money budgeted for Teixeira to sign closer Brian Fuentes, who is seeking a three-year, $30-million deal and has said that the Angels are his first choice.

Votto seems a long shot to be traded.  Acquiring Dye or Atkins would require young pitching the Halos may not be able to spare.  Adding another outfielder would not be ideal, with Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Rivera, and Gary Matthews Jr. in the mix for those three spots and the DH spot.  Still, it could be done.  Burrell or Dunn can at least play some first base.  The Konerko idea seems reasonable, if he’d approve the trade.

Brewers Not Close To Looper Deal

By Alex Walsh | December 21, 2008 at 5:41pm CDT

5:41pm: Brewers GM Doug Melvin confirmed interest in Looper but denied that they’re close to a deal.  Melvin would not say whether the Brewers made an offer, but suggested Looper and the Brewers’ other targets want multiyear deals.

10:28am: In the "Etc." section of his Sunday update, Nick Cafardo has some updated information on a few free agents, as well as some potential trades.

  • Updating a key part of the back-of-the-rotation market, Cafardo says Braden Looper is "close to signing with the Brewers."
  • The Diamondbacks and Red Sox may soon revisit the possibility of an Eric Byrnes trade. Such a deal would likely be made more enticing for the Sox if Miguel Montero were somehow included.
  • The Red Sox would really rather not move Clay Buchholz for a catcher, even if that catcher were Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden of the Texas Rangers. However, Daniel Bard may be in play for a potential deal with Texas.
  • The Reds, Indians, Pirates and Giants are all in the mix for Ty Wigginton. Back on Dec. 18, we had a Wigginton update in an Odds and Ends post that said the player was not interested in returning to Pittsburgh.

Other topics of note (found on page 5 of Cafardo’s article) include the Tampa Bay Rays’ plan for a DH upgrade, as well as some notes on Derek Lowe and Manny Ramirez.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Saturday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2008 at 11:10pm CDT

11:01pm: Michael S. Schmidt at the New York Times writes:

"The Yankees are interested in signing Teixeira, according to two people in baseball with knowledge of the matter, but for the moment are unwilling to pay him more than $160 million over eight years, one of them said."

10:18pm: An update from Kat O’Brien at Newsday says "the Yankees remain on the periphery of the bidding" for Teixeira.

Scott Boras has apparently contacted Brian Cashman to inform him that an 8-year/$180MM contract would be needed to land Tex. This contradicts recent reports that estimate that the Boston Red Sox have made such an offer, since they have not signed the free agent yet.

The article also reiterates the fact that the Yankees do not have an offer out to Teixeira.

6:50pm: Lyle Spencer and Bill Ladson of MLB.com report that Teixeira will decide on where to sign in the next few days.

12:49pm: Jack Curry of the New York Times examines Boras’ "patient, defiant style" and suggests the Red Sox are throwing it right back at him.

Roch Kubatko talks about how Washington’s Ted Lerner is the one owner who could blow the other teams away with a Teixeira offer.  Many people seem to believe they’re willing to go to ten years, $200MM.  Bill Madden suggests Lerner could be this year’s "One Dumb Owner."

9:24am: Yesterday we tracked the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes as the Red Sox seemed to back out, but ultimately remained interested; the rumors continue today.

Jon Heyman writes that talks have resumed between Scott Boras and the Yankees and Angels. The Yankee front office is still deciding which slugger to pursue: Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. Heyman sees signs that "the Angels might be readying for a move," since owner Arte Moreno could consider boosting his bid from the $160-170MM range.

Heyman hears that the Red Sox bid close to $180MM, but ESPN.com reports that their bid was $165-170MM. ESPN heard from an "executive familiar with the meeting" between Teixeira’s people and the Red Sox that Scott Boras seeks an eight-year deal worth $195MM.

However, when Jerry Crasnick asked Boras about this figure, he heard it was "inaccurate" and that there was "very limited discussion of economic considerations" Thursday night.

Adam Kilgore heard from a GM involved with Teixeira who believes "the Red Sox have the best offer on the table."

Michael Silverman thinks the Red Sox need to go all out for Tex and Peter Schmuck doesn’t want a few million dollars to stop the O’s from signing him.

Another Manny Update From Feinsand

By Tim Dierkes | December 20, 2008 at 5:50pm CDT

SATURDAY, 5:47pm: Mark Feinsand reports:

"Manny Ramirez has told friends that he is confident the Yankees will offer him a contract of at least three years."

Earlier this week we clarified that Manny has yet to receive any offer from the Yanks, as far as we can tell.

As this evening’s article states, where Ramirez ends up is largely contingent upon the upcoming Mark Teixeira signing. The Angels, Yankees and Dodgers are on the short list of bidders for Ramirez’ services.

THURSDAY: On Wednesday, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News relayed thoughts from a baseball official who believed the Yankees are willing to give Manny Ramirez a three-year deal worth $22-25MM per.  So this is a likely non-Yankees baseball person giving an opinion.  Feinsand added that two other officials were skeptical that the Yankees would offer three years.

Today, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote:  "The New York Daily News has already reported the Yankees have a three-year, $66 million offer out to Manny."

As far as I can tell, the New York Daily News did not report that the Yankees made a three-year offer or any offer to Ramirez.  If they did, please send me the link and I’ll put it up!

  • More details on Dan Johnson – the Rays are selling him to a Japanese team for $100,000-500,000.
  • Tim Redding’s agent says "the Mets are very much in the mix" for the righty.

  • The Rockies could pursue Braden Looper.
  • The Orioles have expressed interest in Phillies catcher Chris Coste.

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 8:44am CDT

Hoping the Yankees sign Manny Ramirez?  Ken Davidoff of Newsday gives it about a 20% chance.  As for Manny signing with the Mets, Davidoff gives it no chance.

Davidoff’s colleague Kat O’Brien paints a similar picture, suggesting that the Yankees’ baseball operations people "have not even discussed Ramirez at any length."  O’Brien says the Yanks are more interested in Mark Teixeira, who is also a long shot. Tex is expected to sign before Manny.

Did the Mike Cameron talks fizzle to allow for a Yankees pursuit of Manny?  Mark Feinsand’s source says there’s no connection.  Still, Feinsand believes Hank Steinbrenner is pushing for Ramirez.

Yankees Going Hard After Manny?

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2008 at 8:27am CDT

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News talked to one baseball official (presumably not with the Yankees) who believes the Yankees are "going hard" after Manny Ramirez.  That official sees the Yanks willing to offer three years, while other execs see them stopping at two years, $50MM.  Another source told Feinsand that Brian Cashman isn’t keen on Manny but Hank and Hal Steinbrenner are.  Feinsand wonders whether the team’s interest in Ramirez is one reason they’ve put the Mike Cameron trade on hold.

You’ll find a differing point of view from Joel Sherman and Ken Davidoff, who do not see the Yankees signing Manny.  By the way, Jon Heyman talked to a friend of Manny’s who dismissed the idea of retirement.

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Tuesday

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2008 at 12:14pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Yankees aren’t optimistic about signing Mark Teixeira, and "seem ready to pounce for Manny Ramirez."  He says the Yankees "love the idea of Manny."

Heyman notes that Teixeira signing with the Red Sox would be ideal for Manny and Scott Boras, since Boston is not a possibility for Ramirez.  The Angels might have heightened interest in Manny if they are unable to sign Tex.

Odds and Ends: Astros, Saito, Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 15, 2008 at 8:14pm CDT

Links for Monday night…

  • Astros GM Ed Wade is "kicking the tires" on players to share time with Geoff Blum at third next year. It seems unlikely that they can afford Ty Wigginton.
  • The Marlins haven’t yet inquired on Takashi Saito, a recent non-tender.
  • It’s "very unlikely" though "not impossible" that Mark Teixeira or Manny Ramirez becomes a Yankee according to Tyler Kepner. He also thinks that the longer Andy Pettitte waits, the lower the chances are of a return to the Yankees.
  • Adam Everett thinks the Tigers are a great fit for him. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said Everett’s in line to get most of the starts at shortstop.
  • Felipe Lopez could be a positive for the D’Backs in spite of his questionable effort and unspectacular defense, writes Keith Law.
  • Rob Neyer thinks that the Yankees "pretty obviously overpaid" for A.J. Burnett.
  • Here’s a video clip of Bronx Banter authors and Anthony McCarron debating the pros and cons of the Burnett signing.
  • Sarah D. Morris weighs in on the Dodgers’ offseason moves.
  • Tony Massarotti ranks the five worst current pitching contracts.
