Massarotti On The Red Sox

By Tim Dierkes | October 23, 2008 at 1:40pm CDT

Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe takes a look at the upcoming offseason for the Red Sox.

Massarotti says the Sox have had internal discussions about Mark Teixeira, which is not a surprise.  The Red Sox definitely have the money for him.  Signing Tex would necessitate trading Mike Lowell and moving Kevin Youkilis to third base.    Lowell is owed $24MM over the next two years, and he has no-trade protection.  He had hip surgery recently and is expected to be ready for spring training.  My guess at possible suitors: the White Sox, Indians, Twins, Angels, Brewers, Reds, Dodgers, and Giants.

I thought the Sox would be players for C.C. Sabathia, but Massarotti suggests that is unlikely.  He says Boston officials have concerns about Sabathia’s long-term durability.  Massarotti does not see the Red Sox as players for any big name starter.

One other note: the Sox have yet to discuss an extension with Jason Bay’s agent.

Odds and Ends: Prior, Mulder, Cameron

By Tim Dierkes | October 22, 2008 at 10:24am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Mark Prior hopes to return to the Padres, according to a blogger who talked to him at a pumpkin patch.  That wheelbarrow looks a bit heavy…
  • I am still digging through the many applications for the Saturday morning position – thanks for your interest.  Tons of great candidates in the mix.
  • Viva El Birdos reflects on Mark Mulder’s time with the Cardinals.  Mulder is trying everything he can to get back to his old self.
  • Dave Cameron names Mike Cameron the top free agent bargain of last offseason.
  • SI.com’s Jon Heyman looks at how the Rays were built.
  • Joe Posnanski looks at the divergent paths of the Royals and Rays.
  • Sox Machine considers some free agent fits for the White Sox.
  • Mets owner Jeff Wilpon spoke about "addition by subtraction" in a recent radio interview.
  • I agree with this take on the Mark Ellis signing.
  • Patrick Newman believes NPB will eventually soften its stance toward Junichi Tazawa.
  • Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald doesn’t like the idea of the Red Sox shifting things around to accomodate Mark Teixeira.
  • The Mariners apparently have still not decided on their new GM.

Perrotto’s Latest: Peavy, Unit, Joba

By Steve Adams | October 19, 2008 at 1:39pm CDT

John Perrotto has his Every Given Sunday column up over at Baseball Prospectus. Here’s some highlights from his "Rumors and Rumblings section" this week:

  • Perrotto expects a Jake Peavy deal to be done before the Winter Meetings, stating that the Braves, Yankees, and Dodgers seem to be the leaders in the race right now. He notes that the Yankees will be willing to include Phil Hughes, while the Braves are willing to move Yunel Escobar. I personally like the Escobar idea for San Diego, as it would allow them to make Atlanta take on Khalil Greene’s salary. A package around Escobar and Tommy Hanson would certainly be tough to ignore.
  • Perrotto reiterates that a move to the Dodgers or Angels for California-native Randy Johnson seems like a strong possibility. Johnson posted a fine season for the Diamondbacks, despite being 45 years old. He’s maintained a very solid strikeout-rate even at this stage in his career, fanning 8.46 batters per nine innings.
  • The Yankees are planning on using Joba Chamberlain in their rotation next year, but are not planning on settling for what they have. Perrotto states that the Yankees will "go all-in" on the free agent market, making aggressive offers to C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Mark Teixeira. Add in the pursuit of Peavy, and decisions on numerous free agents, and it looks like a very busy offseason for the Bombers.

Olney’s Latest: Teixeira, Sabathia, Ramirez, Burnett

By Nat Boyle | October 19, 2008 at 11:27am CDT

Buster Olney has some fun-to-read analysis of last night’s game, as well as some solid rumors for our consumption:

  • The Yankees seem almost destined to sign Mark Teixeira this offseason, but while it’s been suggested that Teixeira is seeking upwards of 10 years, $200MM, the Yankees may be looking to offer half of that, or "a deal in the range of 6 years, $18-20MM a year." Good news for the Orioles who look to be the biggest competitor for the Yankees in pursuing both Teixeira and A.J. Burnett.
  • The Yankees are gearing up to offer CC Sabathia "an offer that may dwarf those of other clubs, by a factor of 30 or 40 percent." Olney feels that may be a necessary surcharge to convince Sabathia to pitch in the Big Apple.
  • An interesting note: a few months ago, the suggested numbers for a Manny Ramirez contract were 3 or 4 years and $45MM; however, Scott Boras is effectively "working to change the perception of what is an acceptable offer… trying to raise the bar in the minds of teams, so that in the end, somebody might give him 3 years, $60MM and feel like they’re getting a bargain." I’ll add that Manny has done a lot, if not more, to change this perception as well.
  • Make of this what you will but Derek Jeter, whether intentional or not, contributed toward restoring Roger Clemens’ image by standing beside him on the sidelines of the nationally televised Longhorns game yesterday. Olney notes, "I know a whole lot of image-conscious players who would not have done that." Clemens is still unsure whether he is officially retired or not.

Heyman’s Latest: Yankees Offseason Plans

By Alejandro Leal | October 18, 2008 at 9:45am CDT

The latest column by Jon Heyman of SI.com is full of all kinds of Yankees notes:

  • They will pursue a top-of-the-rotation starter, and yes, C.C. Sabathia is one of them, but the list also includes A.J. Burnett, Jake Peavy, Derek Lowe, and possibly Ben Sheets. As we wrote yesterday, Peavy’s agent said he’d need "a lot of convincing" to approve a deal to the American League.
  • According to Heyman the goal is for the Bombers to "secure more than one of them."
  • The Yankees have targeted Mark Teixeira but may also take a look at Manny Ramirez (Heyman has mentioned the Manny to the Yankees possibility before, as has Ken Rosenthal).
  • Interest in Teixeira almost certainly means that Jason Giambi is not returning in 2009.
  • Center field is another position the Yankees hope to fill, but they may go the trade route and Heyman mentions Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy as possible bait.
  • If Mike Mussina decides to pitch again in 2009, the Yankees would want him back. A couple of weeks ago, Buster Olney wrote about a "growing sense" that Mussina would be returning for another season.

Odds and Ends: Steinbrenner, Burnett, Sabathia

By Tim Dierkes | October 12, 2008 at 12:48pm CDT

Links for Sunday, before I head out to Chipotle…

  • Hank Steinbrenner talked to George King of the New York Post. He made it clear that he has not taken a step back in running the Yankees.  Hank also mentions Mark Teixeira by name, calling him a "quality player."
  • Ken Davidoff tries to determine if A.J. Burnett’s injury-prone days are behind him, as his agent would like us to believe.
  • Henry Schulman chatted with Dodgers GM Ned Colletti.
  • John Shea lays odds for the C.C. Sabathia bidding.
  • Phil Rogers campaigns for an extension for Cubs GM Jim Hendry.  He wonders if Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood would follow if Hendry joined a different team.
  • A’s GM Billy Beane talked to Matthew Lutovsky of the Sporting News about fantasy baseball as well as a new video game.

Flexible Payroll For Giants?

By Tim Dierkes | October 8, 2008 at 8:47am CDT

New Giants managing partner Bill Neukom explained yesterday that his team is using an $80MM payroll as a placeholder, and GM Brian Sabean has been instructed to present him with several plans to field a competitive team in 2009.  He would not rule out large contracts for players such as C.C. Sabathia or Mark Teixeira.

Neukom added that he will decide whether to keep Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy around after next season.  Andrew Baggarly has the full transcript of Neukom’s comments here.

Angels Rumors: Teixeira, K-Rod, Uggla

By Tim Dierkes | October 7, 2008 at 10:07am CDT

The Angels were eliminated, so it’s time to look forward to the offseason.  Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times has the latest.

  • Mark Teixeira said the right things again, about how his time with the Angels gives him something to think about as a free agent.  Joel Sherman believes Tex is a great fit for the Yankees, even if he is the "ultimate Boras client."  Sherman figures the Yanks, Red Sox, Orioles, and Angels will compete for Teixeira.
  • Francisco Rodriguez’s first choice is the Angels.  Sherman believes the Angels’ apparent willingness to let K-Rod go is a warning sign for other teams like the Mets.
  • Garret Anderson will be bought out for $3MM, and didn’t want to discuss whether he’d return after that.  Shaikin says Chone Figgins could move to left field if Anderson leaves.
  • Shaikin says the Angels have considered acquiring Dan Uggla as a way to compensate if Teixeira leaves.  Uggla would probably play third base.
  • John Lackey answered in the affirmative when asked whether he’d wait to see the Angels’ offensive plans before considering an extension.  Lackey’s $9MM option is an easy decision but he is a free agent after the ’09 season.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Holliday, Teixeira, Mussina

By Cork Gaines | October 3, 2008 at 1:12pm CDT

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere…

  • MetsBlog recognizes that Francisco Rodriguez will improve the team and appease fans, but is not sure he is worth a four or five-year deal.
  • Mets Geek projects the Mets ’09 roster and looks at some options from outside the organization with Pat Burrell and Derek Lowe being the biggest offseason targets.
  • Was Watching says bringing back Brian Cashman was a mistake.
  • River Ave. Blues assesses the Matt Holliday market and feels that Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano for Holliday "doesn’t make much sense."
  • Sox and Pinstripes provides an in-depth preview of the upcoming offseasons for the Yankees and Red Sox and wonders if Theo Epstein can convince the Rockies to take J.D. Drew and a top prospect for Matt Holliday.
  • iYankees notes that Brian Cashman wants to make the Yankees’ OBP a priority this winter and feels Mark Teixeira fits the bill.
  • Oriole Post does not want to see Mike Mussina return to the O’s and would prefer they "stay the course" with young players.
  • C70 At The Bat takes a look at the Cardinals’ decision to sign Kyle Lohse and what it could mean for the offseason ahead.
  • Viva el Birdos projects the Cardinals ’09 roster and payroll.
  • McCovey Chronicles reacts to some quotes from Brian Sabean and what they mean for the Giants’ offseason.
  • Newberg Report thinks the price for the Rangers to acquire Jake Peavy would be too high, even if he’d waive his no-trade clause to go there.
  • Athletics Nation sees no point in signing Jason Giambi.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Vlad, Cano, Peavy, Hardy

By Tim Dierkes | October 3, 2008 at 8:23am CDT

Today we have a fresh column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

  • Vladimir Guerrero’s $15MM option for ’09 is a lock, but perhaps the Angels will reconsider extending him beyond that.  Some of the money could be used to make Mark Teixeira the next franchise player.
  • Rosenthal says "virtually every club with a need at the position" has shown interest in second baseman Robinson Cano.  If you give Cano a mulligan for April, he hit .297/.326/.448 in 2008.  That seems like a reasonable American League projection going forward.  Cano, 26 in a few weeks, is signed through 2011 with two club options beyond that.  The Yankees would look for a starting pitcher in return.
  • Rosenthal agrees the Padres will explore the trade market for ace Jake Peavy.  He expects Kevin Towers to wait until the big-name free agent starters sign, which will accentuate the relative affordability of Peavy’s contract (basically four years, $63MM).
  • Rosenthal says Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy knows he is likely to be traded to make room for prospect Alcides Escobar.  It’d be a reasonable move, but only if Escobar proves he is a capable replacement.
  • Pat Gillick told Rosenthal he will not be returning as Phillies GM next year, despite recent speculation.
