Yankees Place Holliday On DL, Outright Carter, Promote Andujar

The Yankees have announced a series of roster moves. Veteran DH Matt Holliday will go on the 10-day DL with an illness, with the club seemingly still working to determine how to treat it, while veteran first baseman Chris Carter has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A.

New York has also announced that it selected the contract of third baseman Miguel Andujar. (That move was first reported by Craig Mish of Sirius XM, on Twitter.) The 22-year-old had just earned a promotion to the highest level of the minors after hitting a robust .312/.342/.494 to open the year at Double-A.

The 37-year-old Holliday has had a resurgence at the plate with the Yankees thus far, batting a terrific .262/.366/.511 with 15 homers through 276 plate appearances. That puts the longtime Rockies/Cardinals slugger just five homers shy of his total from the 2016 season and just nine shy of the combined 24 homers he swatted with the Cards in 703 PAs from 2015-16.

The opposite held true for the much younger Carter, who signed a one-year deal to spend his age-30 season with the Yankees this past offseason. Though Carter led the National League in homers last year, he was non-tendered by the Brewers and found just a $3.5MM guarantee from the Yankees. Carter never recovered from a slow start to the year and ultimately was hitting just .204/.286/.383 with eight homers but a sky-high 70 strikeouts in 189 plate appearances (37 percent strikeout rate).

Andujar, just 22 years of age, will be making his big league debut for the Yanks and, in many regards, also auditioning for a longer-term role with the club. After tearing through Double-A pitching at a .312/.342/.494 pace to open the season, Andujar didn’t miss a beat during a quick Triple-A stop, where he slashed .308/.379/.462 in seven games prior to this promotion. He currently ranks ninth among Yankees farmhands, per Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. ESPN’s Keith Law pegged him 10th headed into the year, while Baseball America rated him 12th and Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen had him 11th. Andujar draws praise for above-average defense at the hot corner and strong contact skills.

Yankees Designate Nathan Eovaldi, Joe Mantiply, Nick Rumeblow For Assignment

The Yankees announced that they’ve designated injured right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, recently claimed lefty Joe Mantiply and right-hander Nick Rumbelow for assignment. Additionally, right-hander Branden Pinder has been outrighted. Those moves, in addition to the trade of James Pazos to the Mariners, make room on the 40-man roster for the additions of infielder Miguel Andujar, lefty Dietrich Enns, shortstop Jorge Mateo and right-handers Giovanny Gallegos, Ronald Herrera and Yefrey Ramirez.

Eovaldi’s inclusion in this list will come as a surprise to many, but it’s important to recall that he underwent Tommy John/flexor tendon surgery back in August and is unlikely to be healthy enough to pitch next season. Considering the fact that he was arbitration eligible this winter and then would be a free agent after the 2017 season, there was never any chance that the Yankees were going to commit millions of dollars to him in arbitration. He’ll clear waivers and be released, freeing him up to potentially sign a backloaded two-year deal that would afford him minimal pay and a chance to rehab in 2017 plus a modest base salary for the 2018 campaign. Pinder and Rumbelow, too, suffered torn UCLs and underwent Tommy John surgery this year, though their operations were performed earlier in the year.

Mantiply, 25, logged just 2 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in his MLB debut with the Tigers this year. His minor league work, though, was outstanding, as he pitched to a 2.73 ERA with 10.5 K/9 against 1.8 BB/9 in 59 1/3 innings between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. Though Mantiply works with limited fastball velocity, at best (he averaged 87.5 mph on his fastball in his brief September call-up), he’s posted a sub-3.00 ERA in each season of his pro career since being drafted in the 27th round by Detroit back in 2013. The Yankees claimed him off waivers earlier this month.

Mateo rates as one of the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect on the Yankees’ midseason top 30 list at MLB.com and ranked fourth among Yankees’ farmhands on Baseball America’s most recent top 10 list (which was issued after the season). Andujar (7) and Enns (25) were both on the aforementioned MLB.com list.

AL East Notes: Encarnacion, Andujar, Duquette, Orioles

Here’s the latest from around the AL East…

  • As of today, the Red Sox and Edwin Encarnacion’s representatives had yet to engage in serious negotiations, WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports.  Boston has often been cited as a logical landing spot for the free agent slugger, though Paul Kinzer (Encarnacion’s agent) recently said the Sox weren’t pursuing his client as aggressively as expected, and the club may have other targets in mind for the DH spot who would come at a cheaper price.  The pro-Encarnacion argument for the Red Sox, Bradford notes, is simply that the long-term concerns may not outweigh the relatively safe value of adding his elite bat.  “Because of his recent history, low-impact position, palatable age, and demeanor, it’s fair to suggest Encarnacion wouldn’t be one of those contracts that would make roster-building difficult to manage,” Bradford writes.
  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman says he has “a lot of teams asking me about” prospect Miguel Andujar, Brandon Kuty of NJ Advance Media reports.  Andujar, 21, hit .273/.332/.410 with 12 homers over 570 plate appearances at the high-A and Double-A levels last season, performing significantly better at the lower level (.817 OPS in 251 PA) than the higher (.681 OPS in 319 Double-A PA), as one might expect.  New York took big steps to reload its minor league system last year in the Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller trades, so it remains to be seen how eager the team is to deal Andujar or other notable prospects.  If the Yankees were interested in moving a youngster for a proven big leaguer, however, it would stand to reason that they would move an intriguing but not upper-tier minor leaguer like Andujar than they would a blue chip prospect like Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier.  MLB.com ranks Andujar as the seventh-best prospect in New York’s farm system.
  • Outfield defense and catching depth continue to be offseason priorities for the Orioles, as Dan Duquette tells MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko.  At the recently-concluded GM Meetings, Duquette said the O’s “talked to a couple of clubs about potential trades and then we talked to some agents” about catchers.  With Matt Wieters hitting free agency, Baltimore has a big vacancy behind the plate, as light-hitting Caleb Joseph is currently the top backstop in the organization.
  • Also from Kubatko, the Orioles have parted ways with Rick Peterson, the club’s director of pitching development for the last five seasons.  A longtime coach and coordinator in both the majors and minors, Peterson is perhaps best known as a former pitching coach for the Athletics, Mets and Brewers between 1998-2010.
