Dodgers Looking At Hidalgo?

With Jayson Werth possibly out til May, the Dodgers are in the market for a good fourth outfielder.  Word is that Los Angeles is considering signing Richard Hidalgo to fill the role.  The source is an emailer citing 1540 The Ticket, a radio station in California.  Hidalgo was last seen entertaining offers to play in Japan.

Reportedly, the station's related rumor is that the Dodgers could ship Joel Guzman and Greg Miller to the A's for Barry Zito before picking up Hidalgo.  Despite what Billy Beane has said, a source of mine tells me that at least twelve teams have inquired about the southpaw.  Guzman is the Dodgers' third best prospect according to Baseball America and ranks anywhere from 12th to 29th among all prospects.

wasnt hidalog picked up by the oriols??

Zito 4 Guzman and Miller looks like a really bad deal for the Dodgers.

1) Guzman might leave camp as the Dodgers starting LF.

2) Only the Dodgers know the status of Miller's arm and shoulder. If he truly has recovered then he is a potential #1.

3) The only way in hell the Dodgers should even consider this trade is if they can sign Zito to a 3-4 year deal as the ink dries. To give up Guzman/Miller and to see Zito walk after next year is freakin absurd.

1. Doesn't at all mean he's ready to be even league average at that. .287/.351/.475 at Double A translates to .256/.309/.414 in the Majors.

2. Baseball America says he's far from the same pitcher after two shoulder surgeries. Says he's unlikely to stay healthy enough to realize his #1 starter potential.

3. Well, yeah.

Monger,

A verification of your speculation on Miggy Cabrera:

Makes a lot of sense to me; I've contacted the author and will write a full post on it tomorrow mornin'.

Monger,

I've posted this line of thought elsewhere, but i think the Cubs can afford to make a solid offer for Cabrera. With the presence of Jones and Pierre and the potential to bring Cabrera to Wrigley, Murton and Pie become immediately expendable. The Cubs could also solve the Marlins' hole at second base by sending Todd Walker and cash (they've been rumored to be looking to deal Walker all offseason), and could start Jerry Hairston Jr. at 2nd. Then, they could add Rich Hill to the deal, who dominated the minors last season but is arguably the 8th best SP the Cubs have when everyone is healthy. Finally, they could send Brian Dopirak, who is currently blocked by Derrek Lee at 1st base. That would mean the Marlins would get a ton in return: Walker, Murton, Pie, Hill, and Dopirak. I'm not sure if that's enough to get a deal done, but it sure is a lot of talent...

Um, Hidaldo left Orioles camp because he knew he wasnt going to be a starter. Why would he want to be a 4th OF in LA?

That's fairly speculative; I read that he was upset to not be guaranteed a roster spot. Not necessarily a starting one.

I don't believe any Barry Zito rumors anymore. For one thing, the A's rotation is really set right now and dropping from Zito to Saarloos is a pretty big drop. Saarloos to Loaiza is one thing, but Zito to Saarloos is another.

Miller isn't going to be healthy any time soon, and do the A's really need Guzman that much?

I say this because The A's outfield is rather set for the next 2 years, with Swisher, Kotsay and Bradley. Next year (or mid this year) Daric Barton will come up and take either the 1B or DH job with Dan Johnson taking the other half.

Almost the entire A's starting roster is set for the next two years at least, except for Zito. So I would say that if Zito is traded, then it will be for a top pitching prospect, not for a toolsy outfielder.

I think the A's, if they dealt with the Dodgers, would go Bilingsley or Bust. They certainly have nothing to lose, and all the cards are in their hands.

If there was a trade with the A's, I'd wager it to be more likely involving either Jay Payton or Bobby Kielty, or maybe Freddie Bynum. The A's would then either keep Bynum as the 5th Outfielder/Utility guy, or call up Matt Watson for the 5th Outfield spot.

Hey Rumor, the White Sox made a trade. How'd you miss this ?

If this were the flubs, we would have had 4 threads in the last week about the possibility.

Yeah, I saw it...and yeah that level of a Cubs trade would probably have gotten a mention.

Atleast your honest.
