« Red Sox Sign Matsuzaka | Main | Mariners Acquire Jose Vidro »

Chan Ho Park A Closer Candidate?

Interesting note from the Boston Globe:

"A source told the Globe's Nick Cafardo that during the Matsuzaka negotiations, Boras was trying to sell the Red Sox on signing Chan Ho Park to be the team's closer."

It's a smart idea, grabbing a failed starter and converting him to relief.  Park currently posts mediocre strikeout rates, but it stands to reason that he could bump that up if used in one-inning bursts.  Other starters who could excel in relief: Renyel Pinto, Oliver Perez, Angel Guzman, Jorge de la Rosa, Ian Snell, or Mark Prior.

its worth a try

As a yankees fan, I would LOVE to see Park as the sox closer. Last year was the first since 2001 that his ERA has been under 5.4
Is that really what the sox want out of a closer??

Perez gives up too many HRs to be a closer. Prior has the stuff; too bad he has the body of a 14 year old girl.

The Sox may be getting desperate for a closer, but not Chan-Ho-Park-as-the-closer desperate.

According to BSox, Oliver Perez will be a superstar in the mets rotation next year, so putting him relief is silly.

this deal is not happening but it wouldnt hurt to sign him to say a minor league contract

Before going to KC, Jorge De La Rosa was in relief with the Brewers - the "gem" of the Sexson trade, per Peter Gammons.

Nothing like talking up a guy who needs 25 pitches to finish an inning each time out because he doesn't have the slightest notion of where the strike zone is located, much less how to hit it. Worst pitcher I've seen come through Milwaukee in many years. The only time he approached any semblance of unhittable was when he was working so far out the zone that it was physically impossible to make contact.

I'm shocked to see "success" and "De la Rosa" in any context other than primers on how to overhype radar gun readings to boost trade values of prospects...

Chan Ho Park would probably retire before he took a minor league contract. Going from that huge contract to a minor league contract is an insult. Probably why Sammy Sosa "retired."

Oliver Perez will be dominating again soon. No need to argue with you. You have no basis to say he wont. You probably dont even know his repetoire, or have ever seen him pitch brosius.

Mark Prior as a closer? It's very possible the Cubs slot Wood as the closer (though Dempster might rebound), but I highly don't they use Prior in that way. Nor would they trade him. The guy has way too much up side, even though he has fallen off the baseball radar faster than Paris Hilton gets naked.

...that is, I highly doubt they use Prior that way...sorry.

Ian Snell will be a fine starter.

Park as a closer could work. Remember, Eric Gagne failed as a starter, as did John Wettland.

"Oliver Perez will be dominating again soon. No need to argue with you. You have no basis to say he wont. You probably dont even know his repetoire, or have ever seen him pitch brosius."

We sure nrmax and bsox aren't the same person?

I predict that once Bobby Witt fails to get enough votes to get in the HOF he will make an announcement that he is returning to MLB.

The Red Sox will then sign him to a 5 year/344 million dollar deal to be their closer.

You can't look at Oliver Perez's career stats and trajectory and say "you have no basis to say he wont (be dominating again)" with a straight face, can you?

Perez has lost velocity and control since his single big season -- perhaps a more limited role helps the former but the latter...

I do like the suggestion of Park as a potential closer though. Guys like Latroy Hawkins and Tom Gordon who weren't your prototypical fireballers, like Isringhausen after arm trouble knocked him to relief have some history of converting 5.00 + ERAs into very nice performances from the pen. Parks mix of deception, throwing from multiple angles, and stuff makes it plausible that a change to short relief could work.

"Hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing."
Warren Spahn

Chan Ho Park as closer is a nightmare waiting to happen.

PS. The Cubs will find a way to suck.

Park rocked as a closer for the Korean team in the WBC. He has a chance to revitalize his career.

"PS. The Cubs will find a way to suck."

You aren't gonna get a disagreement out of this Cubs fan.

Screw Park - I hear John Rocker is looking for work. Would be a perfect fit.

Rocker is a good backup plan to Bobby Witt. Never sleep on Bobby Witt.

If Mel Rojas has somehow managed to stay under 350lbs I would think he is a likely possibility as well.

"Screw Park - I hear John Rocker is looking for work. Would be a perfect fit."

I'm pretty sure he'd be shot if he were to pitch in a Yankees or Mets game.

"I'm pretty sure he'd be shot if he were to pitch in a Yankees or Mets game." Only if he won

I think the Red Sox have had enough of Boras for one season.

I love Oliver Perez. I don't know why anyone would be down on him. Guy has filthy stuff and just needs a wee bit more time in honing it. Lefties take a little bit longer anyway.

"Oliver Perez will be dominating again soon. No need to argue with you. You have no basis to say he wont."

How about OPS's against of .861 and .870 the past two seasons? A Groundball to Flyball ratio of 0.64 and 0.63 the past two seasons? # pitches per inning at a ridiculous 18.8 and 18.2 the past two seasons?

Local sports station in dallas reporting D-Mats has signed 6 year 52 mil contract.

"We sure nrmax and bsox aren't the same person?"

Maybe they go to the same high school.

"Oliver Perez will be dominating again soon."
Again???????
"You have no basis to say he wont."
the basis you refer to and subsequently negate is the mans history in the sport. Its not the end all - be all indicator of future success , but tis a guide and Brosius does have a leg to stand on.....two in fact...right????

Perez flashes signs of being really good. But so do a lot of pitchers. Jorge Sosa comes to mind. He won like 13 games a year ago and has incredible stuff. Problem is: he doesn't know how to use it or control it. Samething with Perez.

If scouts or the Pirates thought Perez would go back to that 2004 season, the Mets would have had to trade a lot more for him than Xavier Nady. He's a 27 year old pitcher, supposed to be in his prime, and he's been in the minors as recently as August of last year. I seriously doubt he'll be dominating anytime soon.

The numbers might not really show it but I personally though oliver pitched really well for the mets last year. I don't think his stuff has declined as much as other people do, or maybe he was healthier, but I think most of his problems are from the head and not his pitching arsenal. And I don't think theres a guy in the league who works better with a pitcher's mental game than peterson.

Pittsburgh basically gave up on the kid and Xavier Nady was a 800+ ops guy at the time of the trade, a steal from their perspective considering they were just going to let him rot away in the minors. I wouldn't also call it a stretch to say he didn't want any part of the pirates either.

Considering how he pitched for us in one of the biggest games ever for the franchise, I am more than willing to give him a shot to start as our 5 and hope they can fix the problems that have plagued him the past couple years. To be honest the mets might not have a choice but to have perez as the 5 next year.

Not really sure why theres so much dislike for Chan Ho Park. Like bryan said, park was absolutely money in the WBC, and he was very good for the padres too, till until his intestines went bonkers. Considering who else is out there, Park is a solid option and he'll find a decent major league contract from someone if he wants (and fires boras!).

Boras is an idiot. I hate him.

"Perez has lost velocity and control since his single big season -- perhaps a more limited role helps the former but the latter... "

Im sure that you didnt watch him at all since he started working with Rick Peterson. He was throwing in the high 90s with regularity. Again, im not going to argue right now, because you will all see him dominate next year. Then I will be laughing. Not Joe Morgan, mind your business bro. I wasnt talking to you first of all, and Scottbrosius loves saying shit that he has no proof of, or simply doesnt make sense. Like Scott Boras is a bad agent.
If anybody actually watched him pitch since joining the Mets, sure he struggles, but he also dominated for stretches, and became more and more consistent the more time he pitched. We will see who is lauging come july.

He actually just turned 25, nice try tho dickhead.

He wasnt pitching with rick peterson as his coach. You dont know the story of oliver perez, and how pittsburgh ruined him.
Rick peterson, same guy who turned around mota, bradford, glavine, maine, dave williams, and is known for doing his best work with lefties.

Peterose your just a loser dude. You dont say anything that makes sense besides a bunch of jibberish nobody reads and a bunch of quote all stuck together giving me a headache. Go bet on some baseball games loser

Teetz how bout the guy your team just signed for multi millions and a multi year deal to put up a 6 plus ERA. If perez doesnt work out(which he will) we didnt lose anything. If marquis doesnt work out (which he wont) then you lost 3 years and about 30 million dollars.

Let's not try to avoid the topic of how bad Oliver Perez is. With Rick Peterson, he pitched two quality starts and got shelled in most of the others. Marquis is bad, but I would take the rest of the Cubs rotation over the Mets rotation any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

You talk about Oliver Perez as if he's a good lefty prospect.....like Rich Hill. Compare Oliver Perez's time with the great Rick Peterson to Rich Hill's last two months starting.

Whatever. Youll see

I vote we Ban NL team fans, they can't seem to be even alittle respectful of eachother, and for being a second tier league I don't see what all the fuss is about. q=)

Chan ho park = horrible closer

Oliver Perez = Still a bust, he had one steriod induced year. Perhaps he was using Mota's cream in the playoffs :)

As for Rich Hill = Not a prospect or a very good lefty prospect. He is 26 years old going on 27, a late bloomer with the potential to be an alright pitcher. Please dont act like he is the best lefty prospect in the NL. He isnt close to it.

2 Best LHP Prospects in the National League are Cole Hamels and Scott Olsen. Both project as 1-2 starters and 200+K per year guys.

Everyone thought when the braves made smoltz a closer a couple years ago it was a horrible descision. And look how it turned out. AND I KNOW THAT SMOLTZ IT BETTER THAN PARK BY TON, but maybe he could be a decent closer with a decent amount of saves.

"Peterose your just a loser dude. You dont say anything that makes sense besides a bunch of jibberish nobody reads and a bunch of quote all stuck together giving me a headache. Go bet on some baseball games loser"

You truly are a 19th century poet reincarnated. Oh and gibberish is spelled w/ a G, not a J. Don't worry, as you move up in grade level they'll teach you how to spell properly, and how to formulate proper arguments w/out the need for profanity.

Two letters.... D-H

AL - Junior Circuit

Yeah Mely, but Smoltz had the stuff to be a closer. Unless you are Trevor Hoffman you need gas to be a closer. Park will hit low nineties at best.
